Ok....so after reading some more posts and PJ's I'm thinking....am I starting my dress shopping too late!?!?!

I have appts made (well one next week) and then the rest in late July through AUG....that gives me 8 months..I thought that would be enough time..but I see a lot of you guys get your dress like a year ahead of time...

Please be honest with me, am I starting my dress shopping too late!?!?!

Nope, bit I wouldn't wait much longer if you want to ensure that your dress is altered exactly how you want it! Some private bridal shops take longer than like a David's Bridal. I booked my wedding 7 months out and bought my dress about a month ago, so you're not too late at all!

You're not too late - most books say 6 months is the latest you want to wait if you want a gown that has to be ordered. And after that there's still eBay (except for some eBay sellers that also order the gowns) and sample dresses and David's Bridal.

When you do order your gown, tell them your wedding date is a month earlier than it really is (unless that would be like 3-4 months away) so that you have it in time for alterations. Many shops sit on the order for a few months before placing it...

It Took About 3 Monthes To Get My Dres I Was Told On Average Allow 3-4 Monthes Then About 1 Month For Alterations Depending On Where You Go, But Like Carrie Said Above Always Tell Them Your Wedding Is A Month Earlier Than It Is To Make Sure You Get It On Time That Also Goes For Bridesmaid Dresses!!! 8 Monthes Is Plenty Of Time Don't Worry

I bought my dress the first day I went shopping. It was the first "serious" dress I tried on - the first two were "try it on just for fun" dresses. It fit perfectly and needed no alterations. I kind of felt bad for my mom as she would have liked it if we shopped around a bit but even she agreed it was perfect.

They ordered it in within three days! I have looked at tons on the internet since then and I haven't found anything I like as much. I hope it will be that easy for you....Let's see if I can make that happen with this wand thingy! :wizard:

I started looking for my dress in January, for our August wedding. I thought I was way ahead of the game, but the saleswoman quickly informed me I wasn't. I ended up getting my dress in less than a week after I ordered it!! I ended up ordering it to big, I lost more wight than I was planning, but hey, money worth spending... you've got plenty of time!!!!

Haha it found "the one" the first time I went out (just to try for fun, about 12 months out)...it was the second dress I tried on and my mom kept pressuring me to try other dresses...I felt bad because she said "that's the part that's the most fun!" So we went to 3 other places and then I went back for dress 2. :rotfl: It was fun trying on dresses, but I kept looking and saying, "it's not as sweet as that black one." :rotfl2:

Yikes! But, congrats on the weight loss!! I'm worried about my dress being too big if I lose any more weight after my last fitting... Does anyone know what the timing should be traditionally for fittings? I haven't even taken mine in, because I'm still trying to lose...:confused3

My friend purchased her wedding dress one week before the wedding. She was having one made but when she went for the fitting a week before it was not completely finished and she didn't like how it was looking so she told the dress maker she didn't want it any more. She then very calmly went out and bought a dress - she found the most perfect dress in the first shop she went in, it fit perfectly and needed no alterations - it was like it had been waiting there for her. She looked beautiful!

You're fine. I ordered mine about 6 months before our wedding and it came in 3 1/2 months later, supposedly made to my measurements (nevermind that I hadn't lost any weight and it had to be taken in :confused3 ). When my sister got married a few years ago, she ordered her dress from a designer's salon in Miami (she's a flight attendant and was there on a layover, so why the heck not!) Her dress took about 7 months to come in, but I think that's more of the designer experience, not a standard dress shop.

You are so not too late yet. If you keep your appointments then you will be fine. I started looking 4 months before and was told I had waited too long, I ordered my dress 2 weeks later and then they got it in 9 days later. Thank goodness no alterations yet, I plan on trying the dress on again in July to see if I should bring it in to be altered. Good luck looking!
