Am I the only one who thinks this is out of line? **UPDATE PAGE 2**

Be careful, DD almost ended up playing basketball on a broken ankle this past spring. I think the coach was upset we took her to the orthop. after he and the trainer said it was just a sprain.

I appreciate all the time and effort coaches put in but lately my kids coaches have really been crossing the line. Last night the wrestling coach suggested my son wrestle at 160 and he weighs 181 right now???

Hope he heals quickly and in his own time:)

Well, I just got back from the doctor and he said DS is out for at least 3 more weeks. I went in there with every intention of telling him how unhappy I am with the way this has been handled, but I chickened out (I am not a confrontational person!).

He did another set of x-rays which showed that it's healing well, but it's not ready for any kind of contact sport. It also seemed to me though that he was unhappy at the coach butting in as well. I guess the coach did put him in an awkward position by discussing my son with him, and I still don't really know HOW MUCH was discussed, but I feel better knowing he isn't going to compromise my son's healing for his friend.

Fortunately, the extra office visit didn't cost me anything. It was covered by a blanket $600 "fracture care" fee they charged me on his first visit. They will bill my insurance for the x-rays too.

So for now, all is well, and I am going to tell my DH (who is the asst. hockey coach by the way), to tell the head coach that he doesn't need to concern himself with my son's care from now on. (How's that for handling it?!?!)

The important thing is your DS's complete and timely recovery. It's reassuring that the Doc seems to have that in mind. Let DH take care of the coach.

The bottom line is , your son's medical info is not to be discussed with the coach. I would mention it to the Doctor that he has no business doing that.

The doctor and the coach were out of line for having any sort of discussion about your son. The doctor was out of line to allow the coach's input to change his orignal treatment plan for your son. If he didn't think he needed another evaluation visit immediately, then another one shouldn't have been done. The doctor formulated his plan of care for your son prior to talking to his neighbor the coach, and the original plan should have been followed.

DocRafiki, while obviously the doctor and the coach were discussing something that the coach knew about, the bottom line is that the doctor's response to the coach when any part of the subject was brought up should have been "I do not discuss my patients with anyone." The rules of confidentiality are not specific to certain disease etc. They protect a patient's right to have his/her medical history be kept confidential, period.

"Jump on the professional"...absolutely. "Professional" is the operative word. As such, there is a code of behavior and ethics...in healthcare, this code includes confidentiality.I have a been a registered nurse for almost 20 years. I know things about people that you wouldn't believe...some big, some not-so-big. NONE would ever be discussed. Any healthcare person who cannot keep things confidential needs to find another profession.
