Am I the only one who isn't happy about the rickshaw people?

I tip $5 but the girl I was with tipped $20. Combined weight near 450. She was really impressed that someone found a way to get paid for riding a bike.

Oh boy that puts my kids tipping to shame! So can we get an idea of what the tip should be from:
HRH
RPR
PBH
?

wow. people sure find a lot of things to complain about.

we have stayed numerous times at royal pacific and once at hard rock. I agree. it is a nice stroll, but after a couple days, (if you are staying at royal pacific)that one useless bend around the canal..... after a long day of walking... what is the point of that? they should do away with that.
as far as the rickshaws, just like any ammenities at a resort (baggage, etc.) you can choose to use it or not. you can choose to tip or not.(although I think it would be pretty cheap not to) I never found those poor guys cycling to get in my way walking. they are just kids trying to make a few bucks. if you're on a budget (like we are) say"no thanks".
I'm sure many a family was grateful for their presence after a long day at the parks and a couple of cranky, tired kids. we are empty nesters, and choose to bypass their services. but stepping aside for a moment doesn't bother me at all.

We just got back and I found the rickshaws extremely irritating. They seemed to be moving at a pretty high rate ofspeed probably because crowds were big and they were trying to get as many fares as possible. There were times that the walk way to the HRH was full of people and the bikes had to come to an abrupt stop to avoid hitting people.

Wow if they get 20.00 tips I bet they hated my grandson he rode several times and gave them a dollar for each ride, sometimes in quarters.

That's awesome! That at least is $1 more than they would've made without a fare at all. ;)

We just got back from PB and my 78 year old mom loved the bikes! She can not do stairs or ramps very well and there is no way to avoid them at City Walk. The bike would take her right to the entrance to either park. She tipped them 20.00 each trip. She said they were all very sweet to her. My son also loved them.

We just got back today from HRH. We used the rickshaws twice and were glad to have the opportunity. Other times they'd ask if we'd like a ride and we'd say "No thanks." Usually they had enough fares that we weren't hassled and never had more than one request. The one time we particularly were glad to see an available rickshaw was when lightning shut down most of the rides at IOA as well as the water taxis. I was in the midst of a horrible headache from a sinus infection  and was so pleased to see an empty rickshaw!! (As for tipping, we tipped $10 the first time since we didn't have any smaller bills. And $5 the second time .... there were 4 of us riding each time).

Thought of you...... :goodvibes

My thoughts from a previous thread:

Mixed feelings about the pedicabs: great and convenient after a long day at the parks, but someone is bound to get hit eventually.

We tipped $10 the first time (PBH) and then $5 a few other times...

A little information on the pedicabs at Universal:

They have been there for almost a year and a half, and have never hit anyone, or even been in an accident. (for all you worry warts out there.) They are very highly trained, and can pull just about ANYBODY that can fit in there. For everyone wondering about the typical tipping rates:
HRH from citywalk: $2-$5
PBH from citywalk: $7-$10(a person?)
RPH from citywalk: $5- $10

Remember, they don't get paid hourly, and also have to pay rent on the bikes.

I enjoyed the rides they offered, and even though they may seem like they are badgering, they are just trying to make a living like everyone else. As for the paths, the bells do get a little annoying, but are a necessity as people do not move (even with the ringing bell).

Just curious as to what your association with them is?

How do you know there have never been any accidents?

How do you know what kind of training they have to go through?

I have been a victim of and witnessed several near misses, which is certainly enough for me to question the safety issues involved. I suppose that makes me a worry wart since they've run me off the path numerous times? :rolleyes1

How do you know typical tipping rates?

Sorry, I just find it odd that you have 2 posts on this board and they are both about the rickshaw people.

Sorry too that I don't really care that they're trying to earn a living. I've shelled out a lot of hard-earned money for my vacations and don't care to be bothered by them. Just like I don't care to be bothered by the time share people trying to hock Westgate on me in the parks. I'd rather these people earned their living without having to bother me at all.

They do get somewhat annoyed and even a bit irate when they have to stop while my family wanders from side to side of the walk way. We had a couple of near misses.

Sidewalk riding
(Section 316.2065(10) and (11), Florida Statutes.)

A person propelling a vehicle by human power upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, has all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances.
A person propelling a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk, or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk, shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian.

The way the law reads is the bike must yield to the pedestrian. The law does not read that the pedestrian must yield the right of way to the cyclist upon audible warning.
When a bike is on the road it is considered a vehicle and is encouraged to take the lane if there is insufficient room for a car to pass. On a sidewalk the bike is a pedestrian so why would one pedestrian have to get out of the way for another simply because the one in back makes a noise?

I'm certainly in favor of bicyclists making a living providing this service. The ride is fun. The problem lies with the lack of sidewalk width to allow the shared use. Either shut the pathway down for pedestrians and go pedicabs only or keep it for pedestrians as designed and provde alternative routes for the bikes.

Very highly trained? Here is a list of certified trainers in the State. Who did they receive their training from?
http://www.dcp.ufl.edu/centers/trafficSafetyEd/html_regional-trainers.html

I made the list and am proud to have the knowledge and experience to be a "worry wart"!

Thanks for tips on how much to pay you.

LOL...yeah, it was just a tiny bit obvious, wasn't it?

I heard we had pedicabs here in Celebration for the 4th of July but didn't get to see 'em myself. Lost tourists, violent locals, and pedicabs on the streets of our fair town...that HAD to be an interesting mix!

I don't mind them at all. We saw them as we walked from CityWalk to the Hard Rock Hotel and they said hi every time they passed We were never peddled into taking a ride. And the guys pushing them were all pretty young (I'd say no older than 26/27) and very cute ;)

They were nice boys. We took four and averaged a tip of about $7 from PBH for one adult and two kids. We took one where the driver talked four of us (all adults) into piling in and at the end of the trip held out his hand until we had given him $15. He was a little brazen but still pretty nice.
