Am I stupid to feel guilty about this?

So, I have horses. Two of them can no longer chew/digest regular hay, so I'm buying bagged hay pellets (which is a lot more expensive, but it is what it is). Tractor Supply offers a discount for buying in bulk, and I'm almost POSITIVE it's 5% off (20 bags or more). I bought 20 today, and I asked about the discount for buying in bulk, but mistakenly said 10%. The cashier didn't even question it, she applied a 10% discount and I saved $30 on my 20 bags of hay pellets. Sweet!

Driving home, I realized it was only supposed to be 5%. I know this is right because they had signs near the bags in the store saying so, and I remember thinking it worked out because I couldn't get 5% back using my Freedom card there, but would get 5% off and then 1.5% back using my Freedom Unlimited.

I feel bad! I mean, it's only $15 more than I was supposed to get anyway, but I don't want them to think I did it on purpose, and I really don't want the lady at the cash register to get in hot water for giving too much of a discount. She's worked there a long time, and she's very nice.

What should I do?? Just chalk it up to good luck? Should I go back and offer to pay the difference? Next month, just not get any discount at all to even it out?

I know most people wouldn't care so much, but I have this thing about karma. I'm honest to a fault because I feel like it pays off in unexpected ways later on. I found a $5 bill at school (work) a few weeks ago and I couldn't find anyone to claim it so I gave it to our bookkeeper. She looked at me like I was crazy, LOL, but I just couldn't keep it and sleep at night! It wasn't mine!

What do you guys think? Am I crazy? LOL.

I think if the cashier had worked there as long as you say, then she should know the correct amount. That being said, I doubt she'd get in trouble over $15. If she was consistently giving people a bigger discount, then she'd have an issue.

And I am the same way about karma, but it was an honest error. Next time you go back, you can mention what happened. They'll probably just write it off.

wouldn't it be nice if everyone was this honest? I would do as PP said and just mention that you said the wrong amount of discount the next time you go. They'll appreciate you as a honest customer and are likely to just say it's fine.

That makes me feel better, guys. Thanks.
The fella loading them into the truck for me even asked if I got a discount for buying them in bulk. Actually, that's when it kind of hit me! I said, "Yeah, 10%...or 5%." And HE said, "Probably 10%."

It still worries me. I'll go in there Saturday and come clean. LOL.

I don't think you should feel bad because right now tractor supply has a 10% off in your entire purchase which is most likely what the lady did for you. Specially if she has been there a long time and kinda of knows you.

I think I wish I knew more people like you. I think you're overly worried about it AND I think you're fantastic. Keep being you. Let us know what they say! I admire your honesty.:):flower1::)

I would call, or go back in. They will probably say it's no big deal, but I'd feel better telling them.

If it wasn't intentional I would not worry. You are a good, loyal customer and I'm sure they don't mind the extra $15.

I had a smililar instance with Disney. I received a $220 gift card from my Disney Vacation Account that I wasn't owed. But you know what? It was of no fault of mine. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars on Disney in the last decade that I'll take it as a customer appreciation bonus.

I understand feeling guilty about the hay thing (though I think you're okay), but you seriously wouldn't be able to sleep at night if you found $5 on the ground and didn't turn it in?

If the drawer was going to be short I would worry. Like if they gave you back too much change. Entering An extra discount won't short the drawer. Don't worry about it

OP - I am right with you on this, it would just make me feel better to tell them. I have had cashiers look at me like I was crazy when I went back into the store to tell them they forgot to ring something up or gave me too much change, and an even crazier look when I found $20 in JcPenney and turned it in to security. I just could not sleep at night if I didn't do those things. It does sound in this case that you are in the right, but Feeling guilty is bothering you, so I think you are doing the right thing by telling them.

I'm like this too..Stuff like that drives me crazy. But in this case, I would probably just not take the discount next time and I would feel like it evened out.

Exactly what I was going to say. DH went and got a load of feed yesterday. They told him they could give him the 10% off instead of the regular 5%.

Honestly, shouldn't the register just give the discount if you buy the right amount of bags?

I don't think the cashier was wrong - I think you were expecting the typical discount but now they are having a special promotion. Both the cashier and loader said the same amount. The 5 % signs were always up and they don't take them down for the special sales. I really would move on.

I wouldn't worry! As someone who has worked it retail for many years I know that extra discounts are no big deal now and again. The manager is incredibly unlikely to even notice the extra discount let alone care if they did. :) I think it says wonderful things about your character that you cared so much though!

Yes! I honestly haven't had time to go back to the store since the "incident" (LOL), but was sorting through some mail that had been sitting in my truck for a couple of days. I had thought it was all political flyers, but the TSC coupons were in among all of that other junk. When I saw the 10% I was so relieved!
I still haven't been back in, but I went ahead and tossed the 10% coupon in the trash, figuring I'd already gotten my deal. Kept the 5% for dog food though, since I use their 4Health brand.
I would have told them for sure if I hadn't gotten that coupon. I figure it's all good now, especially since with a coupon I actually should have gotten 15% off (5% for buying in bulk and 10% off of entire purchase). I'm happy with what I got though. :)
