Am I overreacting?

I think most of us who would travel on that date, would just  at first. Then reality sets in.

I cruised out of NYC Sept 11, 2006, the 5 year anniversary. I have to admit to being nervous, but there was SOOO much security on the ground, in the air, etc. I was not nervous enough to alter my dates, I figured I would not let them win.

Every year there are reports that there could be an attack on the anniversary. Every time there is a large mass gathering we hear there could be an attack. Can't let these things govern your life.

I wouldn't think twice about flying that day. If you have to fly, then you have to fly.

i am cruising out of Ft Lauerdale on Sept 11.
I admit to being a little concerned.
But I am NOT going to let anyone dictate my actions.

OP, I understand where you are coming from and would be nervous too.

I am a Travel Agent and since it happened I try not to book anyone on that day to travel. It's my own personal thing because of what I went through and the friends/family and customers I lost that day.

Everyone handles it differently if he really must fly, trust me the security will be EXTREMELY high that day. I pray that he will arrive safe and sound and be home just as quick.

I heard someone speak on what it was like as a member of the FDNY who survived 9/11 and went on working to help find remains at the towers after 9/11.

I'm flying on that day. I had a moment's pause, but only that. The small bit of courage it requires to fly on the anniversary of that day is one way I can honor the courage of those who responded on that day. No way am I going to let those terrorists win by giving into fear. No freaking way. As a native New Yorker I almost feel an obligation to give the middle finger to fear by doing as I please.

I would definitely feel the same way, but I have anxiety and am afraid of flying, anyway.

That said, the rational part of me thinks your dh will be just fine. I hope his flight's not long and you can relax once it's over.

One thing that might help - when my son flew from Kentucky to Seattle, I watched his plane via the airline website the whole time he was in the air. It really helped me.

I would like to know where you have been reading about the possibility of another attack on the 10th anniversary. I know they usually don't publish any type of rumour like that. I know of course reporters will write about speculation and concerns and "what-ifs", but usually the public is always the last to know of a real concern, if ever. Just curious, but I would like to see what you read.

I read it a few months ago.....captured documents during a raid in (?) Afghanistan indicated plans for a 10th anniversary attack.

They are boosting security for the next 4 weeks, it's probably safer than normal. I wouldn't think twice about it.

The ONLY reason I wouldn't want to fly that day is because I wouldn't want to sit in the airport watching them replay the 9-11 footage on the TV screens 24/7. I don't like to fly as it is so watching the planes crash and burn would not be something I want to stare at while in an airport. Other than that, I wouldn't have any problem flying on 9-11.

:thumbsup2 I almost feel it is my patriotic duty to travel around 9/11. I will admit to not having actually flown on the day yet. We flew the 12th last year because our SIL was nervous about 9/11. I, however, would fly then just to prove the point. I would have this year, but I couldn't give up the extra day at WDW, so we're flying on the 10th. Mickey won out over the terrorists! :goodvibes

My DD isn't happy about our being gone over the 10th anniversary tho. But she was only 16 when it happened, so she has a different emotional view then I do. So I understand where the OP is coming from. This is one of those things that we all have different feelings about. All our feelings are valid & real. Noone should have to explain or think that their feelings are wrong.

OP, is your DH nervous about flying that day? If so, can he tell work he is "not available" that day & so needs to fly Monday? If he routinely travels on Sunday for them, this might not work tho. If he does end up flying, try to be supportive & not make him feel worse. Don't watch all the TV coverage of the anniversary & all the replays of the events so you won't be even more stressed. Hugs to you!

Now all that said, I am looking for dates for a trip to Disneyland in 2012. Want to go Nov or Dec. I am pretty much ruling out the week that includes 12/12/12. I don't want to be 3000 miles away from my kids when the world ends!!! ;) :rotfl:

You're overreacting....wouldn't bother me a bit.

Yes, there was a discovery of documents showing that at some point terrorists were tossing around the idea of an attack on the 10th anniversary. It didn't sound like there was ever anything concrete.

The way I look at it is awful, I know, but it helps me (since I'm a nervous flyer anyway). I consider that even IF something terrible were to happen on a day I was flying, the chances that I'd be involved would still be very very slim. There were many thousands of people flying on 9/11/01 and the vast majority survived. I know that's an awful way to think of it because I would never want to minimize the horror of what happened but it helps me to keep my own anxiety in check so I can go on living my life to the fullest.

I am not planning on doing anything that day. Not because I'm scared that something bad will happen due to terrorists....I'm worried about the people who aren't!

People get that stupid sheep mentality, one guy will start throwing beer bottles at another in some downtown event, and then the next thing you know, there will be riot police everywhere. People get in mobs and do stupid crud--look what occurs after a major sporting event.
