Hey all, so I know this isnt a big thing with most of you at this moment but Im kinda leery about it. The whole swine flu, were coming from vancouver BC Canada on my 10th for 11 days, I was all about the hand sanitizers every 10 min or so lol and was gonna go the mask at airports and planes but after seeing it go to a stage 5 Im just curious if Im the only one thinking of postponing the trip??? Im so not trying to open a can of worms here just trying to get opinions. If it was just my friend and I then I wouldnt be so concerned but my 5 year old daughter is coming and we all know kids and germs lol so any input would be appreciated :D thanks

You know, I'm in medicine and I'm seeing a lot of panic for nothing right now. You wouldn't believe how many folks are coming into our ER and demanding to be tested for Swine flu - just because. They don't even have any symptoms. There is caution, and there is caution. I think you will be fine. The odds of you getting any case of Swine Flu is extremely small, considering the size of the Los Angeles population.

Are you old enough to remember the Swine Flu panic of many years ago? The bird flu panic was another. We can't live our lives being scared of the "what if" factor and the media hype. I'm a firm believer that no matter what happens, if something is going to happen to you, it will - no matter what you try to do. Call it God's will/pre-destination/fate/karma/kismet/ whatever.

If you are truly scared, then do what your heart tells you to do. Will you regret it if you don't go? Will it cost you a lot of money if you don't go? Is it worth the loss of that money? Those are only questions you can answer.

I'm heading over to the states in 8 days time, and nothing is stopping me!! :lmao:

Like the PP said do what you feel is best,

I'd read the article below before you jump to any conclusions as far as the lethality of the "H1N1"/swine flu. People have different opinions but I happen to agree with this doctor. As I posted elsewhere, even some of the really panicky news sources have indicated that the flu now appears to be behaving like regular human flu (not swine flu), and it looks like the victims who are the worst off are starting to be the people who are ordinarily hit badly by flu as well (not healthy adults, which is what happened in 1918). In other words, what could have turned into a new flu that's easily communicable from person to person may now be just a strain of the regular human flu, the kind that normally kills around 30,000 Americans every year--mostly the young and the elderly--with very little news coverage and no panic.

Stage 5 just means it's easily transmissible--it does not necessarily mean that what is going around the US now is even deadly.

That said, I like to be prepared for everything. While I think that you and your family will almost certainly stay healthy at this point, if I were Canadian I would be watching the government's reaction overall. Is there any talk at all of them closing the border with the US? (Probably not since you have cases too, right?) But if you think border closure is a real possibility, I would try to find out how you'd get home (and if you could) if the border were closed on the trip.

But yes, I agree that you should do whatever feels right. If I had a trip scheduled tomorrow I would definitely go, but I live in the US and would be able to drive home. If I were coming from Canada I think I'd probably still go (though I haven't been following the news to see if there's any reason not to). But if I were coming from overseas I think I would strongly reconsider--not out of fear of catching the flu, but of the potential that I might have trouble getting a flight home.

Absolutely you are overreacting.

Enjoy your vacation.

Please rest assured that the Disneyland Resort continues to operate normally at this time. Both Disneyland Park and Disney's California Adventure Park remain open according to their previously posted schedules, and all Entertainment offerings are continuing to be offered at their scheduled times.

As always, the safety and well-being of both Guests and Cast Members remains the top priority of the Disneyland Resort as well as of The Walt Disney Company and Affiliated Companies.

I'm sure the Disneyland Resort will comply with the recommendations, guidelines and orders of the World Health Organization, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as Local, State and Federal Authorities.

Guests who feel ill at any time while visiting a Disney Park may visit any First Aid station. These are listed on Park Guidemaps or you can ask any Cast Member for assistance.

Well, I am a nurse, and I am getting on a plane in two days to go to WDW.I all ready gel my hand before I eat or touch my mm, and wash after using the restroom. The only other thing I might do is physically move if I see someone coughing or sneezing. In reality this will protect you form all most any virus or bacteria.

of course the last chain of infection is a susceptible host, so all though it isn't sexy advice.....sleep nutrition, hydration, stress control etc is always your best protection.

So if this vacation will help your stress, it is medicine!

There was a story of someone nearby where I live becoming infected and she just took over the counter cold meds and made a full recovery in about a week. End of story. As long as you remain aware of the symptoms and don't panic I think you'll be fine.

IMO..the reason most people are panicking..isn't because the flu is that deadly..or..that many people are dropping from it..it is because the media has been bombarding us with reports on every single person who has come down with it..I think the media is what is causing this panic...As the other post stated..there are many flu panics over the years..and..yes..I was a kid in the 70's when the first Swine Flu was supposed to kill us all..(I don't remember Disney closing at that time either..)

hi connie107, i am in bc also, and while this is a little stressful, we are planning on leaving for seattle tomorrow and flying to DL saturday morning...my dh and i have had discussions, and decided this flu is already here in bc, we have 6 confirmed cases, 1 being on vancouver island where we are from...i had my youngest daughter in to have her ears checked for flying and asked my doctor his opinion, he told me to have a great trip with a very big smile ( i trust my doctor very much)..he also said the problem with something like this flu-the media takes it and runs and causes panic :confused3:...I have told my kids wash, wash, wash and not touch their faces...good advice anyway...as for people and masks, they say they really dont work anyways...when my youngest was born, she spent 7 weeks in the hospital for being a preemie and needing surgery...at one point, me and my other 2 kids, had a slight cold..well, the childrens hospital had us put on the masks to prevent spreading it to her, the mask did NOT go on her to prevent her from getting it...kinda interesting when i think back to that...anyways, while it is scary, i told me dh that we are not taking our kids into something that they would not be exposed to here, because unfortunately it is already here...

I am curious where in bc you are from and if you had the same flu that flew thru here in february...my younger two kids and dh were sicker than i have ever seen...high, high, high fever, worst sore throat any of them had ever had, coughing to the point their stomach muscles were in agony...my youngest dd had 103-104 temp for 8 days (had a double ear infection also, but day 4 of the antibiotics and still a high fever), both kids missed a full week of school...anyways, flus are awful and scary no matter what!!! Good luck deciding, i understand how you feel...

Thanks so much guys! While I do feel better about going I just need to try and not stress about it which is an issue with me lol. Its great to know everyone else would still go though.

jakoky-so u heard masks wouldnt help?? and yes I had that nasty flu also and it was horrible lol. I just dont wanna spend all this money and go there and have to be in the hotel sick for the whole week lol. Were from langley

There are 3 cases of swine flu just 20 miles from me and I'm not that worried about it.
I have so much to worry about I don't need anything new to stress over.

I would not cancel a DL trip because of swine flu.
Go have a great time, bring hand sanitizer and wash your hands frequently.

I think that the media is blowing it all out of proportion and causing undue panic. I would go. Just take normal "don't get sick" percautions.

I have told my kids wash, wash, wash and not touch their faces...good advice anyway...

Have a wonderful trip..!!!

I 100% agree. :thumbsup2

Hi connie, i just listened to dr. art (global news) and he said we need to put this into perspective, he really doesnt seem too concerned saying it seems to be mild...i have heard the masks only work for about 20 minutes, til your spit/saliva wets the mask and then it becomes ineffective...i have also heard that during surgery, the docs wear the mask to prevent spreading infection to the patient...now just this morning i have heard they work :confused3....i am going to listen to dr. art hister :thumbsup2... I am determined to go and enjoy my vacation...and i am just praying we dont catch any kind of bug down there, or we may not be allowed back into canada for awhile...;)

I completely agree!!!

I am still not that worried about all this either. I agree that media, cable news, has much to do with the "hype". Of course everyone should be aware and practice hygeine.

If..... People start dropping dead from this flu, more than they already do from the regular flu, I will start to worry. But this flu is simply mild so far. No one has died that was from the US. The one in Texas was visiting from Mexico and apparently had underlying medical problems. Again the One person. So to me it makes no sense to panic yet.
Pandemic or not the numbers don't add up to panic.
So enjoy DL and life and just wash your hands and try to steer clear of sick people :)

Everyone is just too paranoid about this whole thing. Only 7 people have been confirmed as dying from the swing flu....39,000 people A YEAR die of regular flu. People are just way too paranoid
