Am I getting upset over nothing?

No, you're not over reacting. Her response was rude and unprofessional. At the time you auditioned, you had the time available. Once you were told that the part/s weren't yours you moved on, made other commitments. A month later she comes to you and asks you to be in the chorus and you've already made other commitments. She needs to understand that time and commitments change.

Usually when someone asks: "Am I getting upset over nothing?" the answer is "yes.". In your case, I think it's "no". The email you received was very unprofessional. The only downside to the whole thing is that you may have alienated the artist director :(.

The upside is that you now know what kind of attitude to expect from this director. Obviously in the past month there have been other people who didn't accept chorus parts or dropped out. She's probably upset about that and took it out on you. But her second email was still unprofessional.

I've been a producing director. People audition all the time who are only interested in one part. They may have done the show before and don't want to be in the chorus again; or they may be willing to make the time commitment for a lead but not chorus. There's nothing wrong with that. I've also been in the position of having to fill a part after rehearsals have started. I would never insult or alienate a performer who didn't accept a part a month after auditioning. Many things could have happened during that month, including changes in schedules or taking a part in a different production.

She's the one who lost out here and alienated you.

About a month ago, I auditioned for a small regional opera company. I didn't get a part and moved on. Well, I got an email yesterday from the artistic director and asking if I'd be in the chorus. Well, I chose not to accept. Not because I have a grudge against the artistic director, it's just I don't want to do the chorus part to this opera. Well, I sent an email back saying that I was unavailable, trying to be nice. This morning I got an email back asking, "What would you have done if we casted you in Carmen? You know it's not a good thing to audition for something you can't commit to." What?! :confused3 I was confused by her response. Why would she send this? Well, I sent this in reply, "I fully understand that it's not a good thing to audition for something that I can't commit to, however, at the time I auditioned for Carmen, I had the time to commit. Since I was not cast in Carmen, I scheduled things for that time frame and therefore am now unavailable." Am I getting upset over something small or am I justified in getting upset? This really irritated the snot out of me (wanted to use something else, but am reminded this is a Dis family site). Thanks for letting me vent.

...And because of emails like this ...Is precisely why I gave up more Opera career!!!!:lmao: :rotfl2:

OP - You have every right to be upset. That response was CRAZY!

Yeah, that would get me miffed to. I think your email was a good response - sets them straight without telling them off!

:)

I agree. I think your response was excellent. I mean, what does she expect you to do? Of course you are going to make other commitments if you are not cast in their show.
