Am I getting old or is this horribly wrong?

I have a question. Miley Cyrus is 17. Practically an adult, and for all intents and purposes, she is. So what are your thoughts on the Can't Be Tamed video? There are a lot in an uproar right now. Is it offensive to you?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjSG6z_13-Q

No.

She is 17. In most places, she is of legal age of consent.

For all of those horrified that our children are losing their childhood, do you realize that rather recently, in the mid 19th century, the age of consent was between 10 and 13?

The beginning of last century, less than a hundred years ago, the age of consent was 12.

Miley Cyrus is 17- the age of consent in MANY states- she knows exactly what she's doing, what it means, what it looks like and how it will be perceived by the public. I don't care for the video- but it's not the same situation.

Many disagree with you and say it's just as EVIL.

Especially since Miley is a "role model".

Yeah, but they were sick, twisted people. ;)

Good post until the last part. What's wrong with self esteem being strengthened by what those girls did?

There is nothing wrong with self-esteem, self confidence etc. for young women. I want my daughter to have these things--but NOT because of her looks. I wouldn't ever, ever dress her up and put her on a stage to be judged for her beauty. As pretty as she is, that is NOT where I want her self esteem to come from. I want her to care enough about her looks to be well groomed etc. but I would have her be smart, skillful, caring etc. than be someone trying to get attention because of her looks or the clothing she is wearing.

Your last question is probably my biggest problem with the whole video! More than the outfit, the moves, the "come hither looks" for the camera--I do not want little girls to get their self esteem from their looks, their bodies, their revealing, sexy clothing...

There is no doubt that these little girls have talent, but right now lack a great deal of actual technique. If they continue training, they will be amazing dancers.

I went back and watched the "dance routine". Aside from it being far too sexual for their age, it's not a good routine. It's far too fast for them and they are too rushed from move to move to make it look polished.

I still haven't read or heard anything about how they placed in the competition....
I'm glad I"m not the only one that noticed. Yes, they were able to pull off a couple of doube or triple pirouettes or fuete turns, but did you not that the one girl doing the most turns tended to fall out of them? She most definitely did not land them cleanly. And really, the turns were the only technically difficult move that I can recall without watching it again. Everything else was just sloppy. The moves were not clean at all. I gave them a pass because they are only 7. But still, other than the turns, the dance did not have great technical difficulty.

I foundout it to disturbing to watch more than about half of it. For the costumes--it's not the amount of skin that's showing that bothers me. It's the fact that it's deliberately designed to look like a bustier and a garter belt. The red satiny material and the black lace add to that appearance and the thigh high stockings and fishnet arm coverings just put it over the top. A 7 yo should not be wearing lingerie.

I'm not a fan of girls of that age doing that kind of dance routine but when you add the costume, it just crosses the line and becomes incredibly inappropriate and difficult to watch, IMO. There's no way my daughter would have been participating at the age of 7.

Exactly.

To those who think that the girls were just imitating the video and what they've seen from performers, one of the moms interviewed insists that the girls haven't watched the video. They learned the song and got the ideas from the Chipmunk Chipettes.

Did anyone else scroll through all of the competition pictures? I did. And EVERY SINGLE TEAM had significantly more clothing on than these girls. It was an urban dance competition where people wear street wear, not the feature outfit from the February Frederick's catalog.

Oh, and the girls didn't win in the competition. This team did:

What a great dance! Do we know if the girls won for their division? The competitions I went to had a variety of categories. Many are divided up in the style of dance, level of difficulty, average age of performer, and size of group. So the girls would be small group division whereas the group that you posted would be production division (although the competitions I went to did also choose overall winners).

A role model for whom?

If Miley Cirus is a role model for anyone's daughter they are in some deep doo-doo.

I THINK I know where you're going with this. Are you talking about how the life expectancy was shorter so there was a need to impregnate girls once they hit puberty but people today still say they're evil? If not, I'm at a loss.

I did not read all the replies on this thread and the video was already taken off of YouTube when I went to view it, but after going to dance convention the last couple years and seeing the type of dance that some teachers teach their students, I would not be surprised as to what the video contained.

At the last convention the 4-5 year old who won (the only one entered) the solo competition did moves that if she had been my DD, I would have yanked her out of that dance school so fast, and would have gone to the owner to voice my concern. It was obvious that the child did not know what she was doing and when asked who choreographed her dance, she said "my teacher". There were bump and grind movements in a dance that started off very cute and age appropriate. It almost turned into a strip routine, the only thing lacking was her taking off her costume.

In the past few years we have noticed that the dance schools that win the competitions are the ones who have all the "Sexy" moves in them. At the dance school I work and dance at (I am 49), we teach moves that are age appropriate and would never teach our babies any type of bump and grind moves. We do not even teach our Juniors (middle school) these types of moves. Even our Advanced (high school & up) rarely use them.

But everyone has their own opinion as to what is or isn't appropriate for kids to do. I personally don't like some of the kids pageants, but do like the Cinderella pageants. To each his own.

 Make that 18. That had to take some time and effort to do.

No actually its really easy! Just click the # of replies on the main page next to the thread name, it does it for you.

Dance isn't about being judged for looks though.

But really, it is.

But they were cheered for how they looked and how they moved on the stage. Moving like that is not where I want my daughter to get her self-esteem from.

I only see a number for me, not for anyone else?

ETA- Okay. I put my cursor over the envelope to the far left and it showed the # of replies just for me. Then I did as you stated and got it. I'm crazy like that. Thanks. Learn something new every day. :)

Yep - people today judge everyone by their moral standards - including people of the past who lived in circumstances beyond their understanding. It is like judging slave owners hundreds of years ago based on today's knowledge and standards.

Hmm wonder why. I get the whole list when I click the amount of replies.

I edited my response. I didn't want to add more replies to the crazy train. I went to the wrong side. :upsidedow I see what you were saying now.

I've been here a long time. Didn't know about that feature! Thanks. :)

You're welcome, someone told me about it too and I thought it was a pretty neat feature. :)
