Am I getting old or is this horribly wrong?

How so? By insinuating the the men in the audience thought of them as strippers and were turned on the the sexuality of these young girls.

That comment is wrong on many levels.

Of course no "normal" man would be turned on by that- but I'm sure that there were men in that audience who were uncomfortable by what they saw.

I admit that I am not familiar with competitive dance so I don't know if lingerie-like costumes on little girls is common place. As an outsider, I did find it a bit shocking. Then again, I would also find the new costume trend for the rumba (basically a bra and undies with a bed sheet attached) shocking on a little girl too.

I don't claim to be an expert either. My DD17 took ballet for years, but the one year she took jazz, the outfit for the show was extremely revealing and very Bob Fosse. This year her school musical was "Chicago" and again some of the outfits were VERY revealing.

My DD11 is in a sport that covers and pads every inch of her body, head to toe. I won't have these issues with her.

And you were okay with that?

And my DD is a competitive swimmer and her competition suit is a size 22 ... 2 full sizes smaller than she practices in. It's pretty much skin tight :scared1:. ETA ... and before someone asks: Yes, I'm OK with that :).

uuh, you can take the condensention out of your post and just answer the question :confused3 If she is so repulsed by it, why would she even want to draw more attention to it, its a simple valid question. You all seem to be so worried about the children and the drooling pedophiles that may have been in the audience. What about the ones watching Joy who had no idea this show existed? I see, its only when they are their watchig live that we have to protect the children, who cares if we hi-light what they are doing so those unaware of it can check it out. Yeah, that make sense :confused3 You dont need to showcase every controversial or repulsive thing out there, the only reason you do it is to make sure YOU stay relevant in today's media. (Not you, I'm talking about those in the media who claim to repulsed by what these little girls are doing).
Oh and BTW she doesn't need to invite the girls on to promote it, just mentioning it gives it attention and draws people's curisioty in, but I'm sure you really do know that

Possibly to inform other dance parent to check what moves are being done at the dance studio and competitons their children are attending.

What was the intent of the choice of the outfit and the dance moves/facial expressions on 7 year old girls? What were they hoping to invoke out of the judges and audience? I really don't know, I am asking. I don't know why this look is so desirable (no pun intended ;)) in a young girls dance performance.

...and I'm sure she looks adorable in it. 2 sizes smaller gives her an dynamic advantage in the water, right? Nothing sexual in that. I distinctly remember comments about Michael Phelps' swimsuit and how inappropriate it looked during the Olympics. Nobody was complaining about his medals though.

Hip Hop is a dance style that incorporates these kinds of moves. If you don't approve, don't allow your daughter to participate. However, the comments here (including forecasting promiscuity and teen motherhood, as well as seeing disgusting things in the video that just aren't there and commenting on men's reactions which are not in evidence anywhere either) are completely wrong.

I can't imagine letting my child onstage in an outfit I would call "extremely revealing" :sad2:

Good. Don't do it. It was appropriate for my daughter in the type of how they were doing.

Oh, but it's for "art" so that makes sit all okay, didn't you know that? ;)

Just like the topless photo of an underage Miley Cyrus wrapped up in a bedsheet, it was for art so that made it tasteful ;)

Apparently we "uncultured folks with dirty minds" just read too much into it :confused3

Did ask DH his opinion last night and it thought it was a age inappropriate also (aka hooker clothes).

I also asked for a naked can can.:rotfl2:

I can tell you that my kids swim competitively. I am on the board of directors of our little summer swim league, so hear more than most parents.

In the past 10 years, we have had 3 instances of a pedophile approaching a young child in a bathing suit.

We think it was the same guy the first two times and a second person the second time. Unfortunately, parents found out what he was doing and chased him off before the police got there so he was never arrested.

The first guy sat down next to an 8 year old boy at a meet for just 8 and unders - about 300 8 and under children, put his arm around him and said he was a friend of the family. Thank goodness those parents, who were at the pool deck watching their other child swim, not more than 20 feet away, had taught their son well about stranger danger. The boy jumped up, said very loudly "I don't know you" and called over to his parents. Other parents, who knew the boy chased the guy. Unfortunately, they should have let him wander the grounds, keeping an eye on him, till the police got there.

So, yes, even though I am on the fence about the dance, the danger of pedophiles at children's events where there are large groups of children milling around (no matter how they are dressed) is very, very real.

Of course they are going to be anywhere that children are. I didn't mean that they wouldn't be there. I just meant that it is unlikely that he is going to sit in an audience and pick out a girl and then be able to know where to find her after the show is over (as in find her home).

Just as you said: it doesn't matter how they are dressed. Again, how the child is dressed does not make them a victim no more than the way a rape victim is dressed makes her a victim.

When dd was in dance, they were kept in the backstage area throughout the show. The school owner hired college and high school girls to stay with them and no one was allowed where they were. The parents came at the end of the show and picked them up from the backstage area. It left close to 0 chance that any girl would be approached by anyone.

But in doing so she has given it attention, something that a person so repulsed by it wouldn't really want to do, KWIM.

I don't put much faith in the media that they do things out of the goodness their heart, especially someone like Behar. Not when the ratings are so important and you are not :rolleyes1

She has 7 USA Swimming Wisconsin state cuts to show for it :cool1:. Virtually all the kids at that level of competition wear skin tight suits.

Wow! Congratulations. Maybe we'll see her at the Olympics in a few years.

...my DD11 can doggie paddle. :rotfl:;)

...and the whole "simulating oral sex" commentary wasn't disgusting? I think the people who are truly outraged by this video see things that just aren't there or they imagine things going on in the audience that just didn't happen. I really don't think it's the video that is sick, it is some of the comments.

I agree with you. While I can understand why people may feel this routine is inappropriate, many people are reading things into this that isn't there.

If you go to a stuio with an Owner and teachers with a mind set of what is and isn't age approprate - NO you won't see this. Along the same line, if you go to a competition with defined regulation of keeping music, costumes, and routines age approprate - NO you won't see this.

If you choose to go with a stuido with an Owner and teachers with a mind set of anything goes - Yep you'll see this type of dance and outfits.

Our girls just went to competion in Detriot Mid-March. The 7-9 HIP-HOP girls wore high top Chucks, old blue jeans with paint spattered on them, neon colored tank tops that were layered (2 on each girl), and a ball cap, that they could wear kicked to the side, turned backwards.

The older girls - 15-18 - wore pink or white shorts with pink and white short football jerseys. They wore the old white knee-hi gym socks with a pink band. And they swapped shoes, so some of the girls wore one pink and one white high top Chucks, while the others wore all white or all pink Chucks.
