We are driving from Syracuse, NY to Orlando are we crazy? lol....we are trying to figure out where to stop and when....Has anyone ever driven a long, long length to get to the World....It will only take 20 hours from here....Yeah crazy

Not in my book... You're a bit farther north than I am but I do it all the time from northern MD - a mom alone with two girls in a minivan with an AAA Plus card just in case while DH flies down to meet us.

There's a wonderful book and website dedicated to I-95 that lists attractions, gas stations, hotels, trivia and so much more that would be good for you to have as a reference I think. Check it out at http://www.drivei95.com/

I don't find the trip unpleasant and the benefits of having my own vehicle there is wonderful. Last summer we drove to WI for the big American Girl sale. It's not for everyone but we enjoy it - hope you will too.:thumbsup2

we do fly occasionally, but road tripping is where it's at!

Thanks for the link...

I don't think you are crazy, if you have plenty of time to spend at Disney. Otherwise I assume it will take you 2 days of driving, each way and you will lose a lot of time that you could be at Disney!
We have driven from Northern Virginia and stopped overnight in Savannah, Georgia. We love having our own car at Disney and we are planning to do the same this August.
Coming from NY we would probably drive 12 the first day and 8 the next. I think that would put you in the lower part of North Carolina for the intervening night.
Good Luck!

We always drive, I am a little scared of flying. From where we are in Pa. it takes us 18 hours, our last trip in March it was me (24) DH (25) DS (3) and DD (8mos.) and we did not have any problems, we had the portable DVD player and handheld games systems and stopped every 4 hours to make sure everyone was fed and happy. We stopped in Georgia and stayed the night and then only had about 4-5 hours left to drive the next day. I love the road trips they are great. Take a cooler with food and drinks for on the way down that way you will just have to stop for gas and at rest stops and you wont have to keep getting on and off exits.

We do the 16 hour trip- so you have about 4 more hours than we do. But really it's not terrible. We try to make it to Georgia- I will say the more driving you can do day one the better. It's harder getting in the second day. Based on where you are coming from I think you could make it to Florence SC as your overnight stop. It's a busy area with tons of hotels to chose from. I think you'll be about 8 hours from disney from there? Maybe less.
I know if we make it to the Savanah area it's usually another 4 hours(depending what's going on in Jacksonville:headache:)

We've driven from Dallas to Orlando 4 times, this year will be our 5th time. We love driving! It is about a 20-22 hour drive for us too depending on how many stops and for how long we take. I just get cozy with a good book, let DH drive and put a movie in for the kids. Much more relaxing than flying for me!

I grew up just a little bit south of you in Elmira. We used to drive to Florida, St. Pete Beach, every year during the 70s and 80s. It took about 20-22 hours. Some of my best memories are of those yearly road trips - 3 kids and a dachshund in the back of the stationwagon.

My mom always packed a cooler of sandwiches and drinks. She also kept a goody bag in the front seat with snacks and surprises for us.

One of our favorite things each year was watching for the South of the Border signs. It was always a contest to see how could spot the first one. Of course, my dad usually refused to stop. Now that I am grown up, I can see why. Yuck!

Since I have grown up and moved to South Carolina, it is only a 5 1/2 hour drive to Orlando but I have made the trip up to NY several times. For us, it is about 15 1/2 hours to Elmira.

It is not a bad drive. You have to do it at least once just for the memories alone.

I agree, I remember as a kid with my sister and brother in our elbowing fights and the tireless games of Ispy played...The countless tapes rewound, singing off key...my brother being gross....we always road tripped and only on rare occasion did we fly....

We've done the drive a few times now from NJ and it's just part of the vacation to us. How often do you get time together without housework to do, TV to distract you (sure most cars have DVD players in them now a days!) but it's alot fun!

We're a road-trippin' family!! We've been cross country twice - once we took a month and stopped a lot. The second time not as long, but just as fun!

We drive to Disney when we go. For our family of 6, it's the only budget-friendly way. I'm always shocked when I see how much it would cost us to fly - if you add in the cost of parking and a car rental at the other end (plus car seat), it's about 1/2 the cost of our entire trip!!! When we drive, we can afford much more Disney!! We also bring our own food for the trip down. For our family of 6 to eat at McDonalds even costs us $35 - $40.

Anyway, we've found that in the car less is more. We used to take LOTS of stuff to play with. Now, we're down to the DVD players and Mp3 players. Much easier!! Go to the library and stock up on DVDs (our librarian is great - she lets us check out 25 or so and always adjusts the due date so we have them for our entire trip). Plan to stop and let the kids stretch their legs. Encourage them to run. Bring snacks that you normally don't allow at home. Give each of the kids a digital camera so they can take really funny pictures of you in the car (this was VERY popular!). Then, they can use them at Disney too. (Actually, we have two digital cameras that we shared.) Oh - let them bring a pillow. It's so much more comfy in the car that way.

Have fun!!

The TA in me is not supposed to point this out but you all are not clients so I just can't help but mention the airbus that is still missing today after encountering strong turbulence and reporting an electrical circuit breakdown. I was just discussing changing our July plans to fly when I heard the news this morning. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families waiting for information today.

It's very rare to have an issue on a plane (besides delays or possibly sitting on the tarmac for hours waiting that is) but living in the northeast corridor between Balto/Wash & NYC the home of the security threat level road signs over the highway, I'm just not that comfortable with our nation's security level at present.
Also a consideration for me is that airfares are on the rise again and flying only shortens our trip by 4 or 5 hours, if that. Plus, DD8 tends to get sick easily and has come down with strep or a virus the last three times we've flown. If we're flying, we now take a prescription for antibiotics along just in case so we're not bothering the dr on call while out of state.

When contemplating whether to drive or fly you need to count the time from door to door for each method of transportation and not just the flight time. don't forget to calculate the time to drive to the airport, park in satellite lot and take a shuttle bus to terminal, arrive 2-3 hrs early, pass security/check in and wait, fly several hours, disembark, claim luggage, pick up rental or ME bus, and then drive/ride to wdw resort. What I do is calculate the difference in costs (rental car or transfers included) and divide that by the hours saved to see if it makes sense to drive or fly before each trip.

I live in Oswego, north of you. Haven't driven to the World in years but did drive to Palm Beach last year and needed my car for a specific purpose.

The air tragedy today is awful but honestly, last time we went, DH and I flew out of the Syracuse airport on a direct flight to MCO. We then took the Magical Express bus to our hotel where our luggage was delivered to our room. Our total travel time from when we left Oswego till we got to our hotel was less than 7 hours with travel to the airport, wait time in Syracuse, flight time, transport to hotel. Driving, that would have put us what....one hour south of PA???? Well worth it for us and the flights were about $210 each on JetBlue.

It depends on your circumstances. I no-way was giving up 4 days of vacation to drive.....

No, I don't think you're crazy at all. I've driven from Michigan to Orlando a number of times, including a couple times all by myself without staying over anywhere. :upsidedow

Have a great time!

It takes us around 20 hours of driving time to drive the 1200 miles to Orlando. We've done it with 3, 4 and 5 kids. I think it builds great memories, and our kids actually like the drive. We don't have any electronic gizmos so it's the old fashioned car games, books, a few toys, and of course lots of Disney music!

Have a great time!

Hey fellow CNYer! I have driven 3 times to WDW from Fulton and we always stop for the night at the Hampton Inn in Florence, SC. It makes the drive the next day to WDW so short! I have a scavenger hunt list if you want it. We have some great memories from the list. My 2 teenage DSs and their 2 DFs in their pj's at a gas station out by the road trying to get a trucker to honk their horn. And getting a construction worker stopped for gas in GA to sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Too funny!!:rotfl2:

I'm in Ludington so I've got you beat on mileage by about 100 miles. However, I stay overnight in Atlanta. I could drive it in 1 shot (I did a Ludington to Billings MT w/o stopping once) but I figured I'd be so tired by the time I got there, that I'd still lose a day just recovering from the trip.

We're in Maine. As a kid we drove to Florida several times. We always took 3 days, so we only went when we had 2+ weeks to travel. Dh and I would drive if it were our only option, but we prefer to fly. We're in Central Maine so we are about 26 hours away. You're not nuts to drive. Just make sure you don't drive when you're really tired! Mythbusters showed that it's as dangerous to drive when tired as when drunk.

We are 3 hours below you about and we are driving 1st time in July. Kind of looking forward to it actually. The way down we have it broken up as we are stopping to see family in Delaware on the way down. But on the way back we will stop over night and drive it in 2 days. I am taking 2 weeks off work. I would love to fly but costs are too high to do it this time around. My DH will be able to see a brother he hasn't seen in years. Which will be nice. Hopefully the other brothers will come also to see us!
