The TA in me is not supposed to point this out but you all are not clients so I just can't help but mention the airbus that is still missing today after encountering strong turbulence and reporting an electrical circuit breakdown. I was just discussing changing our July plans to fly when I heard the news this morning. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families waiting for information today.
It's very rare to have an issue on a plane (besides delays or possibly sitting on the tarmac for hours waiting that is) but living in the northeast corridor between Balto/Wash & NYC the home of the security threat level road signs over the highway, I'm just not that comfortable with our nation's security level at present.
Also a consideration for me is that airfares are on the rise again and flying only shortens our trip by 4 or 5 hours, if that. Plus, DD8 tends to get sick easily and has come down with strep or a virus the last three times we've flown. If we're flying, we now take a prescription for antibiotics along just in case so we're not bothering the dr on call while out of state.
When contemplating whether to drive or fly you need to count the time from door to door for each method of transportation and not just the flight time. don't forget to calculate the time to drive to the airport, park in satellite lot and take a shuttle bus to terminal, arrive 2-3 hrs early, pass security/check in and wait, fly several hours, disembark, claim luggage, pick up rental or ME bus, and then drive/ride to wdw resort. What I do is calculate the difference in costs (rental car or transfers included) and divide that by the hours saved to see if it makes sense to drive or fly before each trip.
