Am I crazy to spend this cash on a 2nd AG doll?

DD just got AG Doll Kit for Christmas....she is really enjoying her. We just had a birthday party for her today actually, yesterday she "took Grace to the vet." Needless to say this was the best toy Santa got her this year, it is also her first AG doll.

Her birthday is a little over 2 weeks away. I made reservations at the AG Cafe in NYC for lunch. I was also going to allow her to pick out a 2nd doll (she wants Ruthie) and an outfit OR accessory while there. I had my doubts about buying DD Kit, but she is really enjoying her. Do you think it's too much to buy 2 dolls in one month?

Hmmm, this is a tough one. I just gave DD5 her first AG doll for XMas. She loves her, and is already asking about a new one. I have Julie in a closet--brand-new in her box--which I picked up at QVC with my discount.

But, I am waiting to give her Julie for her b-day in Nov., when she will be 6. I could just give her the new doll right now, but I don't want to "cheapen" such a special gift. They are expensive, and I want her to appreciate Chrissa for many years.

Maybe you could just buy another outfit for Kit? I think the outfits are lots of fun. But, Ruthie is lovely. Good luck, whatever you decide.

I have three daughters, three Bitty Babies, Julie, Kirsten, and Samantha.....and tons of stuff that goes with them. AG Place in Chicago is coming in February. I will say that my girls love their AG dolls and play with them all the time. Even though the dolls are expensive they have been played with constantly. My eldest daughter has had her Kirsten for two years and loves it as much as her first day! So my vote is ..... if your daughter loves her AG stuff then go for it.

My daughter got 2 dolls in one month. She already had Samantha (bought on our first visit to AG Place in NY), Bitty Baby and the Bitty twins when we bought her Nellie for her 8th birthday. She also had her first communion that same month and chose to spend her communion money on the Felicity doll. She is now 10 and got her fourth doll, Elizabeth, for her 10th birthday (during lunch at AG Place in Boston/Natick). She loves all her dolls equally, plays with them often and is asking for others.

I am so the enabler. :lmao: My girls are getting SEVEN dolls in a 2 week period. :cool1:

My five year old got Emily and the Bitty Twins (so she got 3 dolls)
My 9 year old got: Rebecca, Kirsten, Elizabeth, and she is using her Christmas/birthday money to get Lanie (the 2010 doll) on Friday.

They aren't all from us, I bought only 4 of them, and the rest were either gifts or their own money. I think the dolls are WELL worth the money, great resell value if you outgrow them, and they are certainly better than yet ANOTHER fifty dollar video game. And they have a story, and great play value. So yep..so an enabler.

But my motto is..within REASON...spoil your kids, they are only young ones. You don't want them be brats, but life is hard enough. Especially my 9 year old who has a broken leg and spent Halloween in the hospital and was at the hospital again doing physical therapy on her birthday. Yup, we only live once. Sure, they are expensive..but why be all obsessed about money? You can't take it with you when you go six feet under. :rotfl: So within reason..you only live once!

You would have to buy her something anyway right?! I would probably buy the doll, at least it's something you know she will love!

I would love to learn more about the new doll Lanie. It seems she will be a nature loving little girl from what I've read. Do you all have any more information? My dd will be 4 next week. She has Molly & Ivy as well as one Bitty Twin. She adores nature so I think she would enjoy Lanie.

It's not her fault that her birthday's so close to Christmas. I don't understand how buying her a doll for her birthday is unreasonable unless you normally spend much less on her birthday.

If it were my DD and I thought the gift she'd enjoy most was another AG doll, then I'd give her that.

She will be JUST as thrilled to pick out a new outfit for this doll.
I think it is better to make this one doll a big deal...rather that just accumulate more

:scratchin mmm, how old is your daughter? I guess if it were me I'd just get the accessories and outfits for the first doll and save the second doll for another christmas present. I'd want her to get tired of this one before i introduced another. But if you have the money and can afford it then go for it, this is just what I'd do.

If you search Amazon and type Lanie American Girl they have a picture of the book, I am not sure if you have seen it. I think the release date of the books may be today? I am kind of excited to see her too :)

I say, if you can afford it, go for it.

I bought Kirsten when I was 13 years old, back when the American Girl dolls first came out. My mom thought I was crazy to pay $80 for a doll, but I saved up birthday, Christmas, and allowance money for over a year to get her. She remains one of my most treasured possessions and is still in excellent condition - worth every penny I paid.

That being said, I can no longer afford "brand new" American Girl dolls for my daughters. With a large family and the poor economy, we've leaned to make do other ways. My oldest got a used Kit for Christmas last year, a used Samantha for her birthday this summer, and a used Molly this Christmas. She'll be getting a used Felicity and a used Kirsten next year (already tucked away in my closet), all courtesy of ebay. If I could have found a used Ruthie for under $60, my youngest would have also gotten one. But they are newer and thus not so easy to find pre-owned.

So, if your daughter LOVES her Kit doll and you can afford to buy Ruthie, do it. She'll get years of use out of it and it will make her birthday that much more special and memorable.

my 7 yr old (at the time) got Kit in June (our first trip to an AG store) and got Ruthie for her birthday two months later in August. Since then (1 1/2 yrs ago) she has only asked for books or the occasional outfit until Christmas this year (she asked for Kit's bed) I say go for it if it is in your budget - they are only young once and outgrow dolls so quickly now days!!!

There is nothing as cool as going to the AG store and having them pick out their own doll. As a birthday treat - this would be extra special!!!

LOL, well this was my logic as well, if DD's birthday was in June then this would not be and issue, but it just stinks that her birthday is so close to Christmas lol.

I usually spend about $150 on her birthday gifts. When I told my mom we were going she asked if I would rather her give DD $100 to pick out something at AG Place or would my DD want a DS Lite.

Idk, maybe I'll just get her the doll. She also has some cash from Christmas, we put some away and she has about $75 left over.

I would let her get the doll. My daughter has many AG dolls, she pretends they are all sisters.
