Am I crazy for tent camping in aug.

Is there a reason you couldn't stay off-site and rent two rooms or even a condo to save money?

priced the two rooms already and NOT in the budget...if we get tow rooms it will cost at least 1,500 for a 7 night stay....this is a ONE time in a life time thing for us...

Are the FW cabins expensive? I thought some of them had a couple of bedrooms and a Murphy bed. It seemed pretty nice.

I've read somewhere (camping board?) about people setting up air conditioners in their tents. If it were me, I'd want some way to secure/lock it. Maybe they do and I missed that part.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Hating the cold and camping in August are two different bears.

It will be very muggy at night when you sleep.

Have you looked at renting a pop-up camper?

Camping in and of itself isn't bad in August, but with no place to cool off and your sleeping quarters being outside in the muggy heat. Ick.

Also--when we went Memorial Day weekend--it was absolutely torrential rain that week (almost like tropical storms--but missing the wind). We ran into a couple who was camping--but they had one of those huge bus-style motor homes. They said that Fort Wilderness had turned into a swamp.

It does rain in August--and that is another issue with tent camping at this time of year.

I like tenting between October and March in Florida--not too much outside of those months.

You SHOULD be able to find an off property motel for equal or cheaper than a campsite. It won't be Disney--but you won't be sweating while you sleep.

It depends on your definition of "too hot". It's usually the low 80's once it gets dark and in the mid 70's at night, I don't consider that hot though so I'd go. You can bring a ten fan too.

Go to weather.com and look at the hour by hour forecast and see if you think it'll be too warm.

we have NO choice but to go to Disney in Aug. due to dh's visitation with his boys...and we are a large family and can't afford too rooms but I want to stay on site...

Is Disney court-ordered?

If not, you do have a choice--there are much more economical ways to visit Disney.

I cannot imagine any court finding that a non-custodial parent MUST take their kids to visit to the mouse.

(I'm not meaning to cause controversy, but I hate to hear you surrender your choices in that manner when you do have choices even if it includes an obligatory visit to Disney.)

You said you DH tends to be hot. As someone who also tends to be hot, when you have to sleep in the humidity like they have in August in Orlando, you tend never to be rested. It will be a pretty miserable trip for him if he is never rested and on the go all day.

There are lots of great off-site condos and townhouses. I know you want to stay on-site, but if it comes down to tent camping or a condo, I would pick the condo or stay home.

If that is the case, my suggestion is to go someplace else. Disney will still be there when you are able to save for it.

With your DH thinking anything over 70 is hot, camping in Aug. is just insane.

Go to WDW in style, not in misery.:thumbsup2

think stink and sweat. but go for it.

If your DH is miserable in the heat - and these are his boys that you are taking to Disney for a "once-in-a-lifteime" trip, why would you want to ruin it for everyone by making your DH absolutely miserable the entire time (and likely the boys as well).. Does he have no say in this? If my DH were still alive, I would never do that to him.. His comfort would be equally as important as mine..:confused3

Perhaps you could hire an RV from a local Orlando company? I'm sure that would be a lot of fun for the boys. We love camping but of course in that heat it could be very uncomfortable. At the very least could you use electric fans? I presume you'll be hooked up to an electricity supply. Have fun whatever you decide. :goodvibes

how about an all-star family suite?

how about an all-star family suite?

That would be a lot more comfortable for her DH - and probably the boys as well.. Since she mentioned elsewhere that she's not going until next year, that would give her plenty of time to save up the cost for the suite..:goodvibes

There is no way I would do this. You are setting yourself up for a miserable time.

You already know your hubby doesn't like heat, why would you want to make him miserable? Disney can wait, and if you can't wait, then make sure he gets airconditioning at night at least.

What Serena said. :thumbsup2

Oh, is it August 2010 you're going? In that case you could get a free dining package (assuming it'll be offered next year which it probably will). The food savings would go a long way to paying for 2 rooms. :thumbsup2

disney is not court ordered I meant with his visitation schedule that is the only time we can go...

first I am NOT trying to RUIN anything!!!!! my hubby and I both are looking into this together!! we both have decided we want to tent camp to save money we have 5 kids! I am doing the research and I give it to him and we decide. I just happen to come across someone saying that they thought it was crazy to tent camp in aug. and I wanted to get some opinions....so please don't assume I am trying to ruin anything when you don't really know....that will go further when talking to someone about your opinion...

Did you not say that your DH can't stand it when it's above 70 degrees? That the heat really bothers him? How about we change "ruin" it to it will be absolutely miserable for your DH to have to deal with that extreme heat - in a tent - crammed with 7 people? It's great that you and your DH are looking into this together! When was the last time that he slept in a tent - in Florida - in the extreme heat - in August? If he has never done it, I can see where he might "think" he can do it - but thinking it and actually having to deal with it or two entirely different things..

You have an entire year to save until this trip.. As someone mentioned, the ASMU suites would be a better choice for your family even if you weren't going to attempt tenting.. More room for everyone to move around - cooler for your DH - and you're still onsite..

Prior to your last post, it appeared that you were not giving your DH's comfort any consideration at all (and from some of the other responses here, I'm not the only one who felt that way).. Maybe you should have said that in the first post to avoid any misunderstandings..

You asked for opinions and you got them.. As we all know, we don't always get the ones that we "want" here..:upsidedow

Exactly... especially with teenage boys you will come out so much ahead. It is cheaper to have two rooms at a value than the value suites. We have a large family and that is what we have to do.

there is no way I would camp in Florida in August

I have tent camped a lot and I love it. it's my dh I'm worried about he thinks that when the temp is over 70 it is too hot

I've spent a lot of time in Florida during all parts of the year. The odds are strongly in favor of your husband (and probably the kids too) being miserable.

Check into the cost of the FW cabins if you can indeed get free dining. If not, I would seriously consider staying offsite. Bonnet Creek (previously mentioned) is wonderful. You actually have to drive onsite to get to it. We stayed in Building 5 and watched the fireworks from our balcony (both the Magic Kingdom and Epcot). They have units from 1Br/1Ba up to 4Br/4Ba. You can get very good deals for them too (I paid less than $90 a night for a 2Br/2Ba this past Christmas week). The full kitchen and washer/dryer is a real plus. :thumbsup2
