Am I crazy for saying no to some pixie dust? Has anyone else did anything this crazy?

Awhile back (2000), I was traveling with my boyfriend (now DH) and his parents. We arrived at ASSp and were told they were upgrading us to the BWI, BUT, we'd have to move back to All Stars for the last night. We were like no way, it was a short trip and we didn't want to waste time moving back and forth.

Long story short, it seems as if they had a block of rooms they had taken out of service, I'm still not sure why (I want to say a pipe burst?). Instead of offering that 'upgrade' to someone else, they put us in the rooms that had been taken out of service. They stunk of wet paint, the walls were still tacky. It was August, so it wasn't easily drying.

They never budged on my asking us to just be able to move and stay the full trip at BW, but the manager sat down with us, listened to our concerns, and I think wound up putting air purifiers in the rooms and buying us lunch, IIRC. I think he also sent a gift of some sort to my in-laws room, as they were celebrating their anniversary.

Still not sure, 15 years later, if we should have just moved.

What is "BWI"? Wait, I figured it out! Boardwalk Inn!

I would have taken the upgrade because it's walking distance to Disney Studios and Epcot, and the convenience (for us) would have made up for the inconvenience of moving back for the last night.. but we'd also have asked for a complimentary hotel shuttle for the move.

That's just us, though. :)

When we were checking into All Star Movies last year for a one night visit, the family next to is was being told that the hotel was sold out and they were being moved to the Polynesian for their week's stay.

Thats the kind I'd pixie dust I could only dream off!

That would be very nice indeed !!!

So does Disney book similar to Airlines where they sometimes oversell resorts in anticipation of people canceling? I would think that they are not selling more rooms than they have but apparently they do (no problem if they upgrade and not downgrade).

For me and my husband, we didn't want to have anything we couldn't do again. So instead of scrimping and saving and selling plasma to get an over the water bungalow in Bora Bora, we went on an Alaska cruise. It's all a matter of personality! Good to know your personality and that of your partner. :)

There is value to this perspective -- have been thinking as I read this thread but didn't post because not sure whether or not it was really on topic. However, a few years ago we booked a cruise with a regular room for the five of us, it was a four day cruise to see whether or not we would enjoy cruising for future vacations, especially since my DH sometimes gets cranky when spending several days with what I will refer to as "minimized personal space for the whole family", which kind of "comes with" on cruises.

A few weeks in advance, we were offered the owner's suite as an upgrade, there was an additional fee but it was a small fraction of the original difference between our room and the suite, so we took the upgrade. It was fabulous! However, it completely nixed the idea (which might have had a chance otherwise) that we would ever cruise as a family of five in a single non-suite room. Two-connecting of a regular room for the rabble is fine for us, but after that experience and seeing the room we would otherwise have occupied my DH was like "maybe if I hadn't done it the other way, but ... ". I could have totally gone back and done the single room afterwards, making each subsequent cruise less expensive, but he couldn't (AND, since we have a lovely marriage and understand that sometimes it is necessary to make compromises and accommodate each others' personality quirks, I'm fine with that).

So depending on the personalities of those involved, sometimes accepting pixie dust of this type can have long reaching (and possibly undesirable) outcomes.

I'm not sure they were offering you any pixie dust there. It sounds like they had to make up for their room "renovations". I don't blame you for not wanting to move, I know some people love split stays, but others don't. They should not force you into doing it. If they had to shut down a block of rooms they should have moved you to another hotel for the length of your stay if there was no room available at your current hotel. Disney can't control pipes bursting but they can control accommodating their guests.

Sorry for your inconvenience.

I agree with you! If it were just the two of us, I would have said thanks much but let someone else have it!
And, unlike the others, I bet your wife agrees with you!
BTW, best wishes on your anniversary!

Am I crazy for saying no to some pixie dust?

I'd point out that the fact you're asking means that, deep down, you know the answer is yes... you're crazy for doing that. But I won't say that because the last time I made a harmless joke like that, I was banned for making personal attacks.

I can so see myself doing something like this. I know my hubs would be upset if I turned down an upgrade to AKL from A moderate but I could see me doing that as I don't like being out in boonie Animal country

For us the extra space would remind us of children too. We only have 1 so far and we haven't had a night alone without her yet, and we are definitely in the FAMILY vacation camp. I understand how easy it would be to miss your kiddos when there is room for them.

Also, very interesting perspectives on the once in a lifetime trips and becoming accustomed to too much.

Thanks OP for making this thread. It gave us all a lot to ponder and something to talk about.

I really wish something like that would happen to us.... We always go with kids, so I would love the upgrade.
OP you are very kind to tell them to give it to someone else. I am sure whomever they are, you made their trip extra special. :)

That is very true. If I went on vacation without my daughter (have not..not sure I could) this extra space would totally make me want her there more. I think an anniversary trip...one room is perfect.

It's definitely is going to be hard for my wife and I but we are really looking forward to this trip. We leave tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

I would have said yes. I think Disney makes offers like this specific reasons. One family (or more) needs a particular room, so the offer is made for a switch.
It's kind of a puzzle, fitting dates and rooms. If I could help, I would.
I don't see the upside of declining a kind, gracious offer. It might mean "pixie dust" to a few families, who knows?

Last Aug we were in a Cars suite at AoA. First night it was sweltering hot in our room. Next several nights it was like a freezer! We came back to the room at 6pm after our BB day on our 2nd to last night & were told the entire building (#1) was being upgraded to SSR as the A/C was fried.

We hadn't eaten at that point & I really didn't want to have to transfer all our kids & stuff (bad enough we had to haul it across the resort) & try to find my way around a new resort on our first trip with only one full day left. They found us a suite in the LK section, but I talked to several families who were at the beginning of their trip & ecstatic!
