Am I crazy for saying no to some pixie dust? Has anyone else did anything this crazy?

Ok, OP here and time for some updates:

First, I love all the responses this post has generated. I love to hear the reasons why people think it was a good or bad decision. To each their own. There is no right or wrong here.

Second, it was not my intention to be "ungrateful". It was simply not using something I didn't need. It would be like me ordering a 16oz ribeye and the waiter telling me I was upgraded to the 48oz ribeye free of charge. Obviously, I don't need to eat that much steak. :) Why take something just because it was free?

Third, I did tell my wife and she agreed with me a 100%. As I said in my original post this is our first trip to Disney without the kids. If we were upgraded to a suite and had an empty bedroom it would just have been a reminder that we left the kids at home and that they could have been here with us. We are the kind of people that never just dump off the kids so that we can go out. We are lucky if we have one or two "date" nights a year. We had children for a reason and we love being with them. It was a hard enough decision to leave them home this trip but we also wanted to do something special for our anniversary.

Keep the comments coming, I love them! But as I asked in the original post to anyone else ever say no so some pixie dust?

No to pixie dust? Actually, yes, we did. But they told us we didn't have a choice, lol.

We booked a CR MK CL room. However, at checkin we were given VP suite w/ lake view. They sold our room and all MK views were sold out.

Op, me thinks they want to sell your room, so, if push comes to shove, it wouldn't surprise me if they decide to put you in that upgrade anyway...

I asked my husband about this this afternoon while we were out running errands, we have five kids so running errands is usually our date night. Anyhow he agreed with me, he would have taken it but I am so glad your wife was okay with your decision. I hope you have a wonderful trip, happy anniversary and many more.

I am absolutely convinced all of our responses will be studied as part of someone's college thesis (philosophy, psychology, economics etc. - take your pick)

I've been mulling over the psychology of this all day! :rotfl:

I think it's not really "pixie dust" if you're being forced to take it. More like "pixie dandruff".

Sorry that happened to you!

Well on behalf of the person who was next in line for the upgrade offer (as I assume they offered it to someone else given you said no)-thanks! We are staying at GF with my parents and our five kids-two rooms, and my sister and her family in another. I hope someone shares this kind of pixie dust with me!

the posts about the implications for the marriage have me giggling, I mean if saying no to a room upgrade sets of a marital feud then you got bigger problems to contend with! OP: I am sure you will have a lovely trip in the room you wanted, enjoy and come back and tell us all about it.

You are the kind of person I had in mind when I said no thank you. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Wow, hard to believe the price difference is $1000/night but let's assume it is accurate. Perhaps you were exaggerating to make your point or would your marriage really be ruined as implied in your post even though you were still staying in a one bedroom concierge level suite?

Actually the price difference quoted to me by Disney was $1100/night. So staying 5 nights I said no to a $5500 upgrade. And I'd do it again with no regrets. Once again why do I want 2 extra beds? I already have a dream trip: A club level king room in the main blg at the GF enjoying my 10th wedding anniversary with my wife at the Happiest Place on Earth!!!!!

By taking the suite I would potentially have deprived a family with children an opportunity to have received that same upgrade. As a parent with 4 children I was just trying to pay it forward to another parent.

No doubt. I thought this was a very innocent post when I posted it!

And by doing so negate this whole thread, I hope not! :)

I would have declined too. It would just feel too much like wasted space to with just the two of us. I just feel more comfortable and better when staying at a place with the right amount of space -- not too much and not too little. I do like great views though when offered.// I'd tell my spouse too, but for me I think my husband and I would feel the same way, and I'd just be curious about what he would think. // We had an option in New York that I was given to upgrade from a skyline suite we had booked to a regular suite. I declined on that too, as I had already booked what to me was the perfect size and the perfect view for us. It was already a splurge for us. And I also didn't want my son getting used to suites in NYC and wanting that instead of a hotel room on our trip too.

I wonder if Disney ever upgrades people to an entirely different hotel? Sorry off point..I was just so surprised to learn that they actually call people prior to the vacation to ask if they want an upgrade.

My wife and I are going to Disney next week to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. This is the first time we will be there without our children. I decided to splurge and book a club level room at the Grand Floridian. Well I just received a call from Disney. They wanted to upgrade our 1 bedroom king size room to a suite. One bedroom with a king bed, one with 2 queens, plus a living room and a partial MK view and I said NO thank you! I must be certifiable!!!!

I just felt guilty taking that upgrade and wasting all that space. Like I said it is only my wife and I. I told the gentlemen who called to give it to someone who could use it more that we can.

Please tell me someone else out there has done something this "stupid". Now, the real question is should I let my wife know what I did. :rolleyes1

P.S. Thank you Disney for being so awesome. I really wished I could have used it.

I will call the loony bin to come pick you up!!!!!!!!

Yup, just read thread where person was bumped from CS to POR because of convention. When Disney called they offered extra FP+. He agreed but he had heard that POR is handling overflow of Pop Warner and had expressed this concern. Disney called him back and offered AKL upgrade at no additional fee. He got the confirmation and it had a balance due! He called back but was really irritated. Some said he should be able to get another upgrade with all the aggravation! Waiting to hear how it all turns out.

I would have said no because if I knew that I would have all the extra room, I would start thinking, "Well, maybe we should bring the kids..."

Next thing you know, romantic couple only trip is a family vacation

I had no idea. Live and learn. Thanks for that information. So I guess I better answer all phone calls from that 407 area code number LOL.

I would've gleefully accepted the upgrade. However, I don't think you're strange for not accepting it- sounds like you already have an awesome room booked!

When we were checking into All Star Movies last year for a one night visit, the family next to is was being told that the hotel was sold out and they were being moved to the Polynesian for their week's stay.

Thats the kind I'd pixie dust I could only dream off!

We have a GF CL Deluxe King in October for three of us. I kinda hope that the Disney-Powers-That-Be decide to offer us the same pixie dust so I can grab it and my daughter can have her own room!!!
