Am I asking too Much?

We returned from the World on May 26th. We had to extend our trip an extra day because my DD2 came down with a nasty gastro virus the last night of vacation. After vomiting for 10 hours straight I became extremely worried and called the front desk of the BC for directions to an urgent care center. They informed me they would send a physician. ($252 - but that's another story). After the doc decided she should go to the emergency room - she called the front desk to have them call the ambulance. My DD is fine. But here is my problem. We absolutely loved the BC - but we were not real impressed with the staff. This is our 3rd WDW trip in 2 years and the first time I really felt like the hotel was like "any hotel" - just a lot more money. There was no magic. Now that I am home I just kind of think that somebody should have called or emailed about my daughter's condition. I'm not asking for much - but when a two year old leaves you establisment in an ambulance - I think somebody should call to see how she it. Am I asking too much???

it would have been a nice touch, but I think they are so crazy busy "putting out fires" that are in front of them.
glad to hear your daughter is ok, what a scary moment for you both!!

All I can say is if it were me, I would not expect anyone to call or contact me. This is just my opinion and I'm sure many others will think differently. I guess I just don't have those kind of expectations. Call me cynical or jaded (probably both).

I am glad to hear your daughter got through it okay. I cannot imagine how scary it was for you. :grouphug:

How scary!! So glad your DD is okay now..

However, I would not expect any follow up - even from Disney..

I would not think I would get a call from most places, but Disney is different and I would not be surprised if you had got a call.
Very sorry to hear about your little girl! Was there also that week and 3 of us also got sick. My 19yo DS is still sick. He had to drive home on Fri and a normal 6.5 hour drive took over 8.5 hours due to vomiting and naps he had to take. If I had know he was going to be ill I would never have let him drive home. Thank Goodness his girlfriend was with him, even thou she doesn't drive, and her family made him spend the night at their house cause he was so ill. If he doesn't get a lot better by Mon morning he will be going to the Doctors also.
What did the Emergency Room decide was going on with your little sweetie pie? Sure hope she is a lot better.

She was dehydrated from vomiting so much. I saw two other children, and a couple adults in the emergency room with the same symptoms. It is awful to hear a baby ask for water when you can't give it to them (it just made her sicker). I've talked to a couple people in Florida during the same time and heard about this virus from quite a few. It came on fast and really took her a good week to recover from. You never really think about all the stuff you are exposed to in a big place like that. I guess I'm asking too much with the phone call. I think I'm just so disappointed in the BC CM's that I expected too much. No matter - we are going to try a 4 day Wonder in February - and I am still bordering on becoming a real WDW fanatic! Thanks for the replies! PS hope your's is doing better also!

my answer to the original question is: yes.

I have a friend that is a nurse and while staying at the BC her daughter became violently ill. She knew this was a BIG problem and called the front desk to ask for a doctor. They were basically no help at all for her and before they hung up the phone they said "Have a magical day"......like they didn't "get it" and didn't really care. It was their first visit to WDW and she has HORRID feelings about the BC and how they handled the situation. The basically didn't care - she wound up looking in the yellow pages and called a taxi to take her and her daughter to some clinic. This was about 4 years ago, btw.

In answer to your question, though, I think it would have been the right thing for them to call and inquire about your child. That sounds pretty traumatic for a 2 yr old!

Sorry this happened to you. I am taking my girls and maybe my son by myself without my husband in August. It is my first time on my own and I am very worried about someone getting sick at WDW. What a bummer. :guilty: That is my nightmare, but just seems to happen every time.....nothing serious, just stomach flu.

Take care!

I believe that the staff at the Beach Club should have followed up. It would have been that extra step that would have made so much impact.

I don't think that this is unreasonable to want either. My husband and I were married at WDW and for our wedding night we stayed at AKL. On our one year anniversary we went on a trip to San Antonio and when we got back guess what was on our answering machine. A greeting from the AKL staff wishing us a happy 1st annivesary.

Now, I am a DVC member, but I can tell you that when I stay at a non-DVC hotel my first choice will always be AKL. :earsgirl:

I think you are expecting too much. It would certainly be a nice touch if they remembered to call you, but i wouldn't expect it. I think it's a bit much to be "disappointed". I hope your little girl is doing well now.

I too am glad everything is okay but I have to agree with a few others by saying I wouldn't expect any follow up from anyone either. The Beach Club is a wonderful resort and although it would have been a nice touch, I wouldn't judge the resort badly for not checking back. I'm just glad to read everything turned out okay.

Yes, you are asking too much. I'm sure on any given day WDW many visitors get sick or have health issues. It would be impossible to keep track of the status of each sick guest. I would rather the doctor follow up than an uninterested Disney employee just calling because they have to.
I also seem to recall (although the way my brain is working today, who knows? LOL) someone saying once that Disney won't ask certain questions when it comes to accidents or illnesses that happen on their property as it could be taken as an admission of guilt or something to that extent. Of course I can't remember on which thread I read this. Perhaps this is why they will not follow up on guests in accidents, etc...

A real professional doctor would have followed up on your daughter. I am sure he will follow up if you dont pay the bill. 250 freaking bucks? Just to tell you to go where you were going - I wouldnt pay it. That is not reasonable and customary - I would negotiate that rip off way down. 50 bucks maybe.

I wouldnt hold my breath for customer service for the hotel - These resorts are SO huge its impossible for them to be as magical as they set out to be.

My daughter is doing the college program in the fall (we are from jersey too) and I worry myself to death about her getting sick while being so far away, I really hope she makes some nice friends who look out for each other..... She doesnt go until August but I miss her already - Worry more.

That would be nice, but a regular resort wouldn't do that, why would a disney resort.

Not that you're asking too much, just expecting too much. I've worked in numerous resort hotels, you really wouldn't get a follow up response, and not that they don't care, just way too much happening on a daily basis.

I am impressed that they were able to get the Dr. to come to your room, but I would have thought a Dr. who sent a child to the ER would have followed up at the very least. I would not think the hotel would have the resources to check back though. Sorry to hear you had to end your vacation on such a bad note. :confused3

To Lives4Disney, about the CM who hung up with "Have a magical day", that just kills me. It just goes to show that someone might be picking up the phone and talking, but they are not really listening.

For anyone with United Health Care, if you go to www.myuhc.com and do a search for Lake Buena Vista, FL there are quite a few covered Dr.'s/Hospitals near Disney. I had not thought of what I would do if one of us got sick during the trip :earseek: . I'm glad someone brought this up because now I have a list of places to go if, god forbid, that should happen (add in a knock-on-wood because that would really stink to get sick on vacation).

I would not expect a phone call.

I've stayed at Four Seasons and Ritz and did not receive better treatment than at a WDW or DVC resort.

I'm glad your daughter is all right.

Thanks for all the replies - I guess I WAS expecting too much. It also sounds reasonable that Disney would not acknolwedge the illness for legal reasons. Early on when my daughter became so ill so quickly I did suspect food poisoning (a ghastly dinner at Backlot). Whatever, I have more reasonable expectations now. FYI the medical service did follow up with two calls. (East Coast Medical Network) and my insurance says they will pay half. So all in all it was a learning experience - I learned to be a little more reasonable. Thanks again for bringing my back to earth.

Why will they only pay half - as oppposed to you simply having to pay a normal co-pay? :confused3

I agree. I tend not to expect the extra. However, it would have been a nice touch if they had sent you a note or something.
