Are there ever openings at the campsites? I recently decided that I'd really like to try a Disney camping experience sometime..... but I have looked over several different dates on the website and it always says there is no availability. What's up with that? Will I ever be able to camp at Disney?

Call Disney! There are cancellations everyday so don't just depend on the website!!!

Weekends stay pretty full. Keep trying.pixiedust:

Have you tried booking longer stays? Sometimes you can do that and then go back and cancel the unneeded days. Booking room/site only, of course.

Also, you might try a Disney specialist travel agent. People report having good luck that way also.

You have to be diligent in your search.
There are only 2500 campsites, total. So yes, they are often booked.
However, if you don't go around the holidays, spring break etc. you will be able to get a site.
You can book 499 days out. Those of us that go regularly book our site a the earliest possible date. For example, I booked my Thanksgiving 2013 trip this past July.
However, I have friends that just got a premium site for Thanksgiving 2012 a few weeks ago.
You have to keep trying.

What dates were you looking for nfrank? How were you planning to camp (tent, TT, RV)?

I checked 10/5 to 11/3 (to capture the weekends in October) and Premiums are still available.

Good luck!

I was looking for March - July. I'd probably wanna tent camp. I already have reservations at CSR for October. :) When is the best time to camp at WDW?

If you like the holidays, I vote Halloween 1st and Christmas a very, very close 2nd. Otherwise, I would probably say March.

be sure and call direct to Disney as they are full a lot and far out but do have cancels... my daughter and her husband waited a year to get a campsite there however for hook ups they needed. she said no more so they stay someplace in Orlando area when they do come down

Just out of curiosity.... are there any non-Disney owned campgrounds anywhere near WDW. Not sure if I'd be interested in that or not. I think the big appeal of Disney camping is all the fun amenities and activities. :)

I think there is a nearby campground called Turkey Creek. I am not sure if it is the closest or not but it is one I see mentioned here quite a bit.

Turkey Lake is near Universal and Orlando RV resort is in Clermont.

The shoulder seasons (spring and fall) are the best times to tent camp at the Fort due to the mild weather. Summer is hot and wet, winter can be cold and unpredictable.

The spring campsite rates (from mid-Feb through Easter) are pretty high. From Easter to early June rates are lower and weather is warmer and the Fort is not as crowded. However a lot of people come in to camp just for the weekends which can make getting a ressie tough to get.

The Disney ressie system is designed to discourage short stays and encourage long stays. I checked arriving May 5, 2013 and leaving May 31, 2013 and got availability at all campsite levels (Partial, Full, Preferred, Premium). The max ressie length is 30 days. So the trick we all use if needed is to book as long as you have to in order to get the dates you want, pay the one night fee for a deposit, then call back in a few days and drop the unwanted dates. It's silly but that's the game you have to play.:badpc:

So get that reservation made then check with us closer to time with any questions you might have. A tent would go nicely on a Partial, Full, or Preferred but which one depends on the size of the sand pad you want/need, general location of the loop, and how much bling you want to spend.

PS - Plus if you will be at CSR in October, you might want to take an afternoon to visit the Fort, check out the various loops, maybe eat at Trails End (we get the Giddy Up & Go (GAG) take out dinner of fried chicken and sides for $25 which feeds 4 people - they have picnic tables on the porch to sit at), and stay for the campfire/singalong (up to you if you want to stay for the movie, heh heh). A pre-visit will better prepare you for your real spring adventure. And if the GAG would be too much food, they sell the Lone Ranger take out chicken meal (serves 1 person) for about $10 each.

Thanks so much, Bama ED! That's a great idea! I definitely think I'll check it out in October (and will probably stay for the movie too!). :)
