What is your favorite brand of Wheat or whole grain bread? I have always used white bread and so have my kids. I want to try something a little healthier but I need to get something that my kids will like and don't want to waste a bunch of loaves while trying to figure it out.

To start off the change, why don't you go with one of the whole grain white breads? I believe pepperidge farm makes one thats very good. I saw that Arnold makes one also at the grocery store.

I Love the Fiber One breads. I use the lo-cal ones, but the hi-test ones are good too. I think Wonder makes a whole grain white bread as well if you wanted to ease them in to it. maybe seeing the familiar colored circles on the package will ease their fears :)

We always buy from Costco, Kirkland's Whole Grain bread. You do have to buy in large quantity, since it is Costco (2 loaves are $4.19) but at Costco, you can return anything that you aren't satisfied with...

Wow, I thought Costco was supposed to have good prices? Over $2 a loaf seems a little steep to me. I prefer any 12 grain bread, usually can get a 24 ounce loaf of the store brand for $1.99. But it may be too heavy for some folks.

Maybe it depends on the area?:confused3 I live in Northern VA.

The Costco one I buy used to be $3.99 for the two loaves, but about a month ago, I noticed the price went up to $4.19.

I know a similar store brand bread is $2.50 for smaller loaf at Wegmans (a local grocery store) and other simlar breads (such as Arnolds--same brand as Orowheat on the West Coast) is usually in the high $3 or low $4 range per loaf at other grocery stores.

ETA: Just looked in my pantry, and the Kirkland loaf is 28 ounces.

While I do like a good 12 grain bread, I also like white bread for things like grilled cheese and french toast.

My store carries a whole grain white that I've been buying and we really enjoy it. It does not have all the "junk" of regular white Wonder bread, and is main with whole grains, but it tastes like white bread and has the same texture.

I'm weaning myself off of white bread (I love it) and I'm eating this now:

It's called WhiteWheat Bread. What's the difference between it and regular wheat bread you ask?: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/whole-wheat-bread/AN01512
Basically: "White whole-wheat bread is made with white wheat, which lacks bran color. It also has a milder flavor and softer texture. In contrast, regular whole-wheat bread is made with red wheat, which is darker in color. It has a slightly bitter taste and a coarser texture. So even though both types of bread are made with whole grains, they have a different color, taste and texture."

Good luck making the switch!

My cousin is a nutritionist and lecturer, and he goes on and on sometimes about how deceptive "wheat bread" is, in that most stuff sold as "wheat bread" is not really significantly healthier than white bread, and that allowing producers to try to market their "wheat bread" as something somehow better than "white bread" in any health-related way is deceptive and damaging to America's health, overall, because it lulls us into a false sense of security.

Currently, he's recommending just one national brand of bread that meets his criteria: Food For Life's Ezekiel bread.

If that's not an option, he says that you buy bread for which "sprouted wheat" is the first ingredient... or at the very least, that "whole wheat" (not "whole wheat flour") is the first ingredient.

We like Friehofers and one other brand I can't remember but it's Canadian Whole Wheat. No idea what that means but we like it!

I rarely buy "Wonder Bread White" bread but we like Italian bread, Oatmeal bread and the OatNut breads. I think that anything is better than plain old Wonder Bread.

I also make a lot of our bread so that at least I know what's going in it.

We buy "Franz Whole Grain White" bread. DH likes white bread, but I like the whole grain. It has more fiber than normal bread and no HFCS.

i've been eating wheat bread for years, and mine is nature's own 100% whole grain bread. it says it has 14 grams of whole grain per slice. unfortunately, as bicker pointed out, it may not be any healthier than wheat bread, because the first ingredient is "stone ground whole wheat flour" and not just "stone ground whole wheat". it tastes really good though.

Yeah, that really got me. I thought we were doing so well, all those years buying bread made from "whole wheat flour" only to find, from someone I trust like family (because he is!) that I was taken in by a sham.

Not that I follow his advice mind you. I like the taste of the whole wheat bread we typically buy, better than any other bread out there. That's why I buy it. Some times I will buy (truly) healthy bread, but other times I figure that taste matters a lot, too.

For bread we typically only by Ezekiel, including their sliced bread, hamburger buns, English muffins, tortilla wraps:

These two beat me to posting this. Yes, some "whole wheat" breads are nothing more than naturally colored white bread. That is because during processing, the germ and bran has been so pulverized and broken down, that it becomes as useless & unhealthy as white flour.

Always check the ingredients, even when it says, "whole wheat." Look for stone ground whole wheat, or whole grain, or sprouted grain.

I agree on the Ezekiel breads. :thumbsup2 They is quite tasty. It becomes a real flavor component of the sandwich as it does have it's own rich flavor. Your family will have to take that into consideration. You cannot put peanut butter & jelly (which really is unhealthy as this combo typically has so much sugar,) on this bread and expect the bread to be bland and disappear into the background.

You might take a look at Einkorn bread. I'm not much of a bread eater anymore, but understand that of the breads out there for sale, Einkorn does not produce the high level of blood sugar that white or wheat bread will.

It is surprising at how high whole wheat bread will increase blood sugar levels - higher than a Mars candy bar and slightly higher than white bread.

What increases blood sugar more than wheat?
