Alternative to Cake?

My trip crew is Papa, Nana, me, Husband, Son 4, Son >1, Brother, and SIL.

On Papa's birthday, we eat at Tusker House for dinner. This is also our first night so the tentative plan is to go to Osborne Lights afterward, if we can hack it.

My mom (Nana) wants to get a cake. However, Dad (Papa) doesn't like chocolate. My husband only eats chocolate/chocolate cake. Brother and I don't like cake. And we're, you know, at a buffet. I hate to spend $23 on a vanilla/vanilla cake that my mom and dad will eat and my SIL and I will likely eat more out of guilt (4yo also doesn't eat cake. Lots of pie celebration in this family!).

Does anyone have alternate suggestions? We could possibly have cake at our hotel YC, if it gives more flavor options (and semi-creative flavor could get my brother to guilt eat a piece) but coordinating it with coming back from the Lights and bedtimes sounds stressful.

Basically, I want to gently remind my mom that cake is pointless for this crew and see if I can offer an alternative. Any suggestions?

Our family isn't really big into actually eating cake generally. But they like the celebration aspect of it. So we ordered a 6" cake for our youngest's birthday in January at Chef Mickey's. The actual food wasn't a great value, but the celebration aspect of it for a little one was huge and we took it back to the room and nibbled on it for the rest of the trip. Then, in August, I ordered a mini cake for our room at WL as a welcome/snack throughout the trip. It's not like we ate huge pieces at a time - just a small sweet treat over several days. The kids and I took three days and three nights to eat a mini cake. The kids loved both of these cakes - and for taste, preferred the mini cake.

So maybe that's an option if your mom is interested in a cake. At least at WL, it was really easy to arrange a delivery time. (We did 9:30pm for a 9pm Epcot closing time - so it was there and fresh when we returned - we did not have to be in the room for delivery and they just added it to our room charges - super easy.) And a mini cake may make everyone feel less obligated to have a huge piece, or even a piece at all. It's just a tiny bite, but still very festive!

If she wants to buy a cake, she should buy a cake. It should be one that the birthday-man wants, period.

And anyone who doesn't like the cake shouldn't eat any. No one should be eating anything out of guilt.

That said...there are desserts at Tusker House. Along with a sort of cobbler that could easily fill in as pie for you guys. There are (every time we've been there) these neat, small, pyramidal desserts that seem cake-ish. Everyone could put their desired dessert on their plate and then the birthday song could be sung, and everyone would be happy.

I suggest getting a selection of pasteries from Boardwalk Bakery...you can even get a small cake or cupcakes if you wish.

You could also call Private Dining at YC and ask for ideas. I know they could definitely do chocolate covered strawberries but I'm sure they could provide other offerings.

What about a cupcake? Then the rest of you can eat from the dessert buffet.

This is what I was thinking also. Lots of awesome cupcakes at Kusafiri Bakery right next to Tusker House! (And I really don't know what to make of people who don't like cake . . that is just wrong . . . LOL!)
