I am not sure if this is the right board to ask this but

We are driving to WDW from CT and I recall reading about an alternate route (other than Rte 95) that does not go thru Baltimore and DC. It looks like it may be Route 81. Is that right?

But do you cut back to 95 in Richmond or do you take it further south

There are several routes other than 95.

84-81-66-17-95: return to 95 near Fredricksburg, VA

84-81-64-288-95: return to 95 at Richmond,VA

84-81-77-26-95: return to 95 in South Carolina

84-87-287-78: to 81-66-17-95 or 81-77-26-95 or 81-64-288-95

84-684-287-87-287-78: to 81-66-17-95 or 81-77-26-95 or 81-64-288-95

We have done most of the above at least once. This is the route we're planning on using this year from Maine:

95-495-290-90-84-87-287-78-81-66-17-95-295-95-295-95-4.The first 295 goes around Richmond, VA and the second 295 goes around Jacksonville, FL.

We've done the 84-81-77-26-95 route a few times and really enjoy the beautiful scenery after a few 95 trips in which we always got stuck in DC (even one time at 3am). Next weekend we're driving to Hilton Head so I think we'll try the 84-81-64-288-95: return to 95 at Richmond,VA route. We have found traffic can be dreadful around DC all the way to Richmond.

Wish us luck!

We also took the 77-26-95 route (we start out on 90, being in WNY) when we used to drive down.

It is a really nice drive that way. :) My kids love going through the mountain (literally!) in VA.
