Altered Paint Can Swap - Progress Thread Deadline 10/31

I have a stupid question. I got a couple of paint cans last night at Lowes. I measured them and they are 13 1/2 inches around, which means that 12x12 paper is an inch or so too short to go all the way around. What do you all do? I have looked on different sites to get ideas, but none really show the back of the can. :confused3

On the other hand I now have great ideas for Christmas!

I plan on using a complimentary (is that spelled right? :confused3 Where is spell check when I need it??) cardstock and having that be the front, somehow. You know making is special. Does that make sense?

You mean kinda like the cardstock is the "label" the pretty paper is the "background"?

ok, I'm not in this swap, but I can't stay away from this thread, LOL

Thinking ahead to Christmas....would this be a good idea to tuck a gift card in?? Trying to think of something clever for teacher gifts. :confused3 I wouldn't want them to just throw out the cans and wonder what the heck it's supposed to be, LOL. I love to have Christmas-looking Christmas gifts, but I'm thinking that a more teacher-ish gift would be more usable for them.

Those of you thinking of these for gifts for non-scrappers, any ideas on what you plan on doing with them?

Exactly! Except it is vertical and not horizontal. It would make a great mat for embellishments or words. You could even use several papers to make it stand out even more. Or wrap the paper in ribbon. Great, now I've got these ideas running through my head. I was going to work on the ABC book today... :rolleyes1

I think these will make GREAT gifts for non-scrappers!!! I am planning on making a gallon sized one for my SILs baby shower (I plan on putting in a mini coaster album of her first DD, some lotions and bath salts and burts bees lip balm and a gift card to babies r us and MAYBE a onesie for soon-to-be-here new niece!) and another gallon sized one for my cousin who is graduating college this year. I think it's a GREAT idea to put a gift card in, how neat!! Especially for teachers!!!!

very cool! Thanks for the other suggestions! :thumbsup2

ps--how do you all plan on sticking the paper to the can? Glue dots? Other adhesive? ModPodge (which I don't know exactly how to use  )?
Thanks! :thanks:

You can use double sided tape if it is thin paper but I would suggest using modpodge for cardstock. The easiest way of using modpodge is to rough up the can a little with steel wool or sandpaper, paint the glue onto the can right out of the bottle using a foam brush, adhere the paper and apply another coat of modpodge. It dries pretty quickly too. Or adhere thr paper with double sided tape and then apply the modpodge.

In case anyone was interested in mini composition books, they have them at Dollar Tree in a pack of 4 for $1. Was there last night and they had them.

Thanks! I've been looking everywhere for them. I checked one dollar tree and couldn't find any so I'll go to the big one this weekend. Are they in the stationary section?

The one I went to was a smaller Dollar Tree and it was with the back to school supplies. I had to stoop down to get them. They just caught my eye. Around here I probably have 5 Dollar Trees in a 8 mile radius and they all have a different layout.

I picked up 14 cans at Home Depot today. They were $1.88 each. Lowe's wanted $2.36 and my LSS wanted $2.49. Make sure to check the lids. There were two that were very dented. Left those there.

Today was my experimenting day. I got my hands on one extra paint can and decided to try out what would work best to attach the paper to the can. I'd found a new double stided sticky tape at Michaels and wanted to try it out on a can for myself before using it on the cans for everyone else. I tried it with some heavy weight Club Scrap cardstock and so far, everything looks good. I want to wait a couple of days before I start the swap cans, just to make sure it holds well. I've had some tapes that let go after a few hours, or after a day, especially with the heavy weight cardstocks. Cross your fingers ladies, and wish me luck.

Good Luck!! If it works, make sure you post the name of the tape. I'll want to get some.

Some great shopping in Kittery, ME and a rubber stamp/scrapbooking store there. :thumbsup2

I was reading this thread to see what good ideas you ladies were coming up with and I just have to ask - what's the name of the store you visited? I'm always looking for new stores to try!

Well, the tape seems to be holding very well, even with the heavy weight, textured carstock I used. I didn't rough up the can at all, just used the tape directly. I found this up by the registers at Michael's. Hope it helps someone out.
