In a few weeks we are heading back to the world and I am really in a quandry over my reservation decision.

Secured a room with AP rate EPW at the Poly becasue at the time I made the ressie the AKL (our current fav) was all booked up.

We have stayed at the poly both concierge and non several times.

We love the resort for it's theming, accessibility to the monorail ect. but the last time we stayed there (June of 2002) we were so disappointed that I was compelled to write a letter to Guest Relations, something I have never done before. About 6 weeks later I recieved a phone call where a very symapthetic lady listened to my concerns. She apologized and assured me that our comments would be taken to heart. That was the end of that.

The next 2 times we have gone to WDW we have stayed at the AKL and found it to be a wonderful family resort, no complaints whatsoever.

I have "issues" about spending all that $$$ and not feeling that I have received adequate value for my dollars. We enjoy the "deluxe" resorts very much for all they have to offer.

We are a family of 5 and therefore require a room that can accomodate us all. In the deluxe catagory that means a room at the Poly, Contemporary, WL "Jr. Suite", AKL "deluxe" room, or GF (Do not know if those rooms hold 5 people).

I have read that many of the Poly buildings have undergone renovations in the past 2 years. I read last night's installment of all ears where the feature article was about the poly. We poured over Tikiman's site. Still I worry. One thing that to most of you may seem silly is the shower and bathrooms there.

Some have double sinks, some do not. Some have sinks OUTSIDE of the bathroom ( a huge plus when 5 people are trying to get ready), some do not.
Before someone blasts me, YES we called the front desk about our concerns and we were told that they would make a note of it (someone did bring us the two lightbulbs since there were 2 burned out- one lamp and 1 vanity) but we were not offered the possibility of moving out of those rooms. Nor did we ask- although in retrospect we should have.

On our trip in June 2002 we had 2 Poly rooms, #1802 and #1803 in the Roratonga building. (we had all 4 of our kids with us on that trip). The furniture was literally falling to pieces, 3 of the 4 bedspreads were worn & faded and had clearly visible tears. I must say that Room 1803 smelled just like our golden retriever does after he's been out in the rain! Several ceiling tiles were moldy, the sliding glass door leaked at the bottom and the rug was constantly wet there (lots of rain in June), and then there was the shower!

I am only 5'3" tall. We are not a particularly tall family in fact, yet we all had "miserable bathing experiences". The shower heads were mounted so low that one had to stoop to rinse one's hair. The water pressure was dismal no matter how much you fiddled with the showerhead and there Never seemed to be any consistant hot water delivery in the 8 nights we were there no matter what time we showered.

The top requirements for me in customer satisfaction for a hotel room are:
Is the room clean and in good repair?
Is the mattress comfortable?
Can I get a good invigorating shower?

Not much to ask when one is dropping huge coinage at a resort.

Does ANYONE know if, in the renovation process, they did anything about the showers!?!

I appreciate all input on this matter and any other concerns or comments on the Poly are welcome.

We stayed in Samoa a couple weeks ago, and I can answer your shower question...

NO! The shower head is WAY too low. I am six feet tall, my hubby is 6'2", and we had to do the limbo to rinse our hair (actually, DH used a cup of water, but his hair is much shorter). The water pressure was not too bad for me, but we live in a house where everything is 'low-flow' so I'm accustomed to a little less water pressure.

I agree, a double sink would have been fabulous. Especially since I was constantly washing sippy cups & refillable mugs.

The quality of the furnishings were fine. Everything looked fairly new and clean. I didn't notice any mold, either. I didn't have a problem with the bed. I slept well, which is rare for me when traveling (but I may have been too exhausted to notice).

with 5 in a room, you have the day bed in the room at the Poly, GF, BC, and YC and the deluxe's at AKL and WL, don't know about the Contemporary. The Poly is an old resort. I am sure the height of the showers has not changed. The sinks are on the inside of the bathroom. They are outside the bathroom at the others. They can change carpet, matresses, wallpaper but the phyical structure is "set in stone" unless they build new.

Have you tried the BC or YC for a new experience? Perhaps you should keep calling back for AKL.....we love it there also........

Keep 'em coming people, I am really stressing here today....

Bring all comments. DH said if your not happy call and change it.

I've stayed at the Poly about 25-30 days a year for the last 3 years. We love it there. While I have never had any big issues I have had light bulbs burned out and a shower head that had no pressure. With this problems I simply called housekeeping and everything was fixed within an hour. Are you saying you should have been offered a new room due to lightbulbs burned out and a defunct shower head or where there problems that you haven't listed? I am 5'3" also and out of all the rooms we have stayed in I have never had to stoop to wash my hair. All the showerheads are mounted high on the wall so that was never a problem. Maybe you had a handicapped room? The time there was no pressure it was due to the holes where the water came out having a lime buildup. A simple switch and we were given a massage head that was very nice. Our rooms have always been clean and really nice. I've never had any bad mousekeepers or rooms that needed renovated. Maybe we were lucky? Hot water was never a problem either. I would give them another try since you really need the space.

for me I would never want to start my vacation thinking and worrying that I might be upset with the hotel room...I would make ressies at a place I am comfortable with and have had a good experience at...why stress about vacation.....

is there a happy memory that you have about the poly? otherwise why pick it...

I'M GOING THERE TOMORROW AND THIS...

Don't let that scare you! All of the rooms have been redone. While I have heard some say there was a distinct smell of mildew on some rooms I have never experienced it. If I thought the Poly would be bad I would never pay rack rate which I have done in the past. We were just there in May and it was paradise. I am going to the Poly in 8 days and am so looking forward to it! Have a great trip!

I agree with your DH. Personally, we love the Poly, but you need to do what you think is best for you & your family. The resort you stay at is such a big part of your vacation - you should stay where you feel comfortable.

As for the showers - one year we had really low water pressure so I called the Front Desk. They sent up a maintenance worker (who showed up in less than 5 minutes) who took out the water flow regulator. The water pressure was fine after that.

We stayed at the Poly last June and did not have any problems with the room outside of a pretty big cobweb on the valance. We were in Tahiti, room 3505. Two sinks in the bathroom. Water pressure was fine ( I have thick hair so that is an issue for me) and hot water was never a problem. I'm 5'6" and did not have a problem with the shower head. Bedding was clean and in good condition and the carpets were cleaned midway through our stay.

I had also heard about the mildew smell so I took a can of Lysol with me. Sprayed down the bathroom and never gave it a second thought.

Good luck with your decision.

We were at the Poly Late July/August (Hawaii bldg.). Our room only had one sink, inside the bathroom. (There are varying room layouts in various buildings...see Tikiman's site for these.) The furnishings were in good shape. I thought the shower pressure was low (but I like a massage shower that beats the heck out of me:rolleyes: ). We also joked that there was low pessure in the shower because the toilets were so high pressure (we were afraid they would suck us down in them!) Beds were great. We were perfectly happy with the room. BUT, I also agree, that if it is causing you to worry that much, try someplace else.

The Poly reviews seem to fall along 2 lines here - the "I love it, everything's in wonderful condition, will definitely stay there next trip" and the flip side "in need of renovation, smelled mold, was very disappointed". Not much opinion inbetween....

We were there last month (for the first time) and arrived 2 days after Charley. The room was first rate (and this was in Tokelau which supposedly hasn't been renovated - and doesn't seem to need it IMHO) and I saw NO wear on carpets, furnishings, etc. anywhere! I'm also at a loss to explain the mold smell that some have noted as we were on the first floor - where it's supposed to be worse if it exists - and the humidity had to be close to 100% the whole week. Not one sign of mold either visibly or by smell - honest! Shower pressure was fine, and my DH is 6'2" and had no problem.

I agree that you have to go with what you're comfortable with. But, while I DON'T doubt people's reports about less than ideal conditions, it's hard to reconcile that view with what we saw. In the end, if you don't like your room conditions, wherever you stay, get it resolved while you're there....!

Sorry to ramble - have a good trip wherever you stay!

Stacilee,

When are you going?

I will say that since 2002 all the original buildings (Fiji, Aotearoa, Tuvalu, Samoa, Niue, Hawaii and Rarotonga) have been completely redone (except the bathrooms) including carpet, paint and replacing any materials that have wear or damage. As for the shower the height of the shower head is the same but the pressure problem does not seem to still be a problem and we never had a hot water problem when we were there in July-August.

There are no longer any rooms with sinks outside the bathroom. These were only a few test rooms in Tokelau that I am told were all made the same back in the late 90’s. There are bathrooms with two sinks and those would be in Tahiti and Rapa Nui.

Starting the beginning of the year they are going to redesign the entire look of the rooms (room by room) with out closing the entire building. You can see that info on my pages with dates. This redesign will not include moving the sinks out of the bathroom. I don’t have any idea what the new bathroom will look like or if they will move the shower head.

Aloha

Steve

Thanks Steve and everyone else.
Steve we are going 10/13- 10/19. Is there a gardenview room- building that you can recommend other than CL?

Lets see, to answer a few questions and comments:

First off let me say that I appreciate all of your frank comments and suggestions and secondly I know that sometimes, well -things happen. Life is not perfect nor can I expect every single aspect of a vacation to "be perfect" every time. Having said that I am assuring you that I'm not embellishing or exaggerating any of my comments. In fact I went way, way back in my documents file and re-read the letter and list I sent to guest relations immediately after that trip and had forgotten some of my "concerns". Re-reading that letter was what prompted me to express myself here on this board in the first place.

No, we did not think that a few burned out lightbulbs and a crummy shower warranted a new room, which is why we didn't ask for one. The lightbulbs were promptly and courteously replaced but the response to the shower inquiry the next day was "Hmm." No action or offer to send maintenance was to follow.

That same day they sent someone to replace an air filter I think for the A/C but it didn't chase away the golden retiever smell. Eventurally we got used to it but I was glad that I didn't have to sleep in that room. We have read comments on these boards for years about the "smell" at the Poly and always laughed about it since we had stayed there many times and never experienced it firsthand. On the trip I am referring to the smell was undeniable. Not in "our" room but the one we put the boys in and to ward off any wisecracks from comedians, NO it was NOT THE BOYS! It was already there when we arrived!

ksc37 , do you recall if you were in the Roratonga building perhaps? Maybe when the bathrooms there were fitted, the plumber that worked in some of the rooms was short and only put the shower mounting where he/she thought would be a good height. LOL No, it was not a handicapped accessible room. Just a regular room with actual tub etc.

Please don't think I am being ultra sensitive or that I have my cranky pants on. I am a happy, gung-ho Disser!

We HAVE enjoyed some lovely stays at the Poly and it hold wonderful memories for us. It is just that we have also experienced better and IMHO, on Disney property, ALL of the deluxes should be maintained in consistant topnotch fashion.

There is no replacement for a Disney Vacation for us as it is OUR happiest place on Earth.

I am not a Disney basher nor a POLY basher as I can certainly understand everyone's emotional attatchment to that particular resort! Why do you think it took our family so long to get DH to give in and try anything BUT the Poly? LOL

Keep the comments coming please and help me work this through...

Yes infact there are many garden view rooms that are non-concierge that have even better views.

Tokelau has great views and it is possible that if you are down on the end near the beach that you will see the lagoon, castle and maybe even fireworks. It also has slightly larger rooms.

Samoa has great views of either pool area.

Fiji has great views of either the marina or the beach over near Luau Cove.

There are many different garden locations that are great and not concierge.

It is not crazy for you to say the shower is low. It has been that way in every room I have been in. While we are at it the hair dryer sucks or I guess I should say does not blow.

As far as the smell the most accurate response I can give is that Rarotonga has been redone so I would bet any smell is gone unless someone has spilt something in the room since. I will say the only reports of smell lately have been a few reports of ground level rooms in Tahiti. I myself have not read any reports about any smells in any other rooms since the older ones were worked on.

I hope that helps.

Aloha

Okay,I'm going to jump on the Poly bandwagon here..esp sicne we are arriving there next Monday.

Although I've not stayed at rhe Poly since 1989 I remember it well and visit every time we return to WDW. I remember the "poly smell" and actually like it and look forward to it because it is unique to the Poly -I always attributed it to all the foliage.

We requested Tokelua and Rapa Nui because I needed a room to fit 5 comfortably ( 1 adult, 4 kids) and knew those longhuse rooms were larger.

Over the yrs the reason I have not stayed at the Poly again is because with each visit it was so run down that I preferred to stay at a newer resort - BC, YC, AKL...the Cont has always been very clean, but I do not like the sterile feeling of the decor.

This time I was very, very torn about staying at the Poly and ever since I changed my res from WL (which does not appeal to me at all) I have been tempted to try to snag a BC or YC room..why? Becasue I worry that the Poly will be run down and I will be disappointed. It is a splurge for me this trip and I so want to enjoy my stay whichever resort.

Last night when I called the front desk about another matter and spoke with a supervisor she rec Figi east side, facing the marina. She asked me call her back and ask for her by name over the weekend so she can block a room. I have MS and do not require a handicap room, but do need a room with lots of light. I had requested Tokelua or Tahiti, but was concened that they are scheduled for rehab, so might be quite run down.

This much too long post is surely not of any help other than to let you know you are not alone in your concern. Even as I write this I am tempted to call to see if YC is available...and yet nothing can replace the beauty and relaxed feeling of the Poly. It is a special and unique resort and those who love her will return.

Best of luck with your decision..what other resort might you consider? The Cont has nice large rooms and can usually be had for a good price with a discount code.
Keep us posted, please?

We stayed at the Poly in Tahiti (Moorea then) way back in 1991 and absolutely loved it. Since then we have been trying other resorts and loved many of them especially YC. We returned this year to Poly LVC and were not happy. It wasn't quite what we had remembered and in all fairness to the Poly it could be because the others are newer. I didn't like the bathrooms either and I felt like the halls were low and dark. Our service wasn't very good either but that's another story. I had worries before we went too and I wish I had listened to them. I'm not trying to bash the Poly but no one knows what you like better than yourself and if you have concerns there's probably a reason for it. That's why Disney makes so many different resorts, to suit everyone's tastes.

I haven't stayed at the Poly since the 80's, frankly with my extreme respiratory issues I have been told by friends that it's not a good environment for me. I hope that with the room renovations that I'll be seeing more and more good trip reports, without the smells and mold sightings, otherwise I don't know when I can chance staying there again which is really sad because my husband loves the look of the resort and has never stayed there!

For the original poster I just wanted to say that most rooms at the Contemporary can also fit five people: two queens and a daybed.

I hope your trip is wonderful, no matter where you stay. Please let us know how it works out!

yesterday I called and talked to a very understanding ressie lady about my predicament. She opened up screen after screen for me and told me that at this time there "is no room at the inn".

Apparently the weekend that we are planning to visit has become completely booked up, (10/14- 10/19), for all rooms offering the AP rate in all of the hotels that we are capable of fitting our family into.

There was avalability on a number of suites in case anyone here is interested though, 3 at AKL, 1 at the Contemporary (deluxe garden wing suite 860/nt AP rate) , 1 "jr suite" (sleeps 6, 2 queens +1 queen pull out couch- 435/nt AP rate)) at the WL.

We even tried to see if there were say, 2 standard rooms avail. but no luck. We checked the moderates too. CS is booked solid with 2 conventions as was SS.

I suppose October, which used to be a "quiet month" has really grown in popularity with the Food & Wine Festival. I suppose too, that the recent hurricanes have something to do with it as I think a lot of people juggled their plans to avoid the dangerous weather of the last month and rebooked for October.

I read on another thread on the boards that Orange County schools are now going to use two of the days of that week for "make-up days" so perhaps something may still open up.
I am not ready to give up just yet on the hopes of changing resorts, but in the meantime I am still interested in any input you may have to offer on your recent experiences with the Poly.
