Aloha! ***Welcome to the NEW Poly FAQ***

Does anyone have a picture of what the Great Ceremonial House looks like as you are driving up to it? I've seen lots of interior pics, but nothing from the outside!

Also, how close is the Hawaii building to everything- the pool, the monorail, the GCH?

Thanks!

I leave for the Poly next week and I am sooooooo excited, I can't even sleep at night! I am going with my kids- ds2 and dd6...hubby will meet us there 3 days later because he has to work!

Anyway, we actually just switched resorts from ASmu to Poly. I am reading through this great thread so I can be as prepared as possible when I arive. Here are my questions. I requested Tokelau over the phone. Do most of you check in online? If yes, will I know if my request was granted before I arrive at Poly? I am a bit nervous, as I have never traveled without my husband.

Also, my family really enjoys DTD. Is the bus ride from the Poly a long one? I am just trying to plan everything out and I don't have much time left. We usually stay offsite and rent a car. This transportation system is totally new to me!

I booked breakfast at Kona, and of course cannot get a ressie at Ohana for dinner:confused3 I am calling everyday and checking online to see if there have been any cancellations but so far nothing!

I would appreciate any tips and "must-do's" you may have for staying at the Poly with young kids:yay:

I think Tokelau is a great choice!! Our favorite longhouse. I did not do online check in this last trip (it wasn't available for that), but we do not check in during a busy time. I never had to wait, it wasn't an issue at all. Tokelau wasn't available for our first night, so we ended up doing 1 night in Fiji, then switching. The bus ride from DTD to the Poly seemed long to me, but it was they only time I've taken a Disney bus (we drive down). But it wasn't horrendously long, lots of people do it so it must be OK. Or you could always get a cab if it's "meltdown" time ;) Keep trying for Ohana dinner - we loved it. As far as going without your DH for the beginning - maybe stick with the monorail places (MK, Epcot) for those first days to make it easier on yourself? Also, the kids will probably love the pool if it's warm enough, so relax and soak in that Poly atmosphere.

Best tips for young ones - be sure to catch the Torch Lighting ceremony. Tues-Sat (I think), meet by the front lobby doors. They'll be captivated by the swirling fire! The pool is wonderful, your 6 year old should love the slide. My kids love just watching/chasing all the little lizards around the resort. Watch the EWP and Wishes from the beach or grassy areas. Sometimes we get our kids cleaned up and in PJ's first, then go out and watch. Then right to bed when we come back in!!

I don't have any photos, but be aware that the GCH is not all that impressive as you're driving up to it (that's probably why there aren't very many photos). You drive up along the side of the building with the GCH on your right, and it just looks like a big brown building (with a monorail coming out of it and lots of tropical foliage). It's pretty, IMO, but not like, WOW! It's when you get off the bus and smell the aromas and see all the gorgeous details that it strikes you how beautiful it is.

Hawaii is very centrally located, steps from the two pools, and very close to the GCH, bus stop and boat dock. It's just a little further, but still very easy walking distance from TTC.

Congrats on the switch from ASMu to the Poly!!! The Poly is a lovely resort, full of Disney theming and beautiful gardens, a beach, and the best views!!!:cloud9:

IMO the bus ride to DTD from any of the monorail resorts is not great. We sometimes take a taxi one way at least to cut down on the time spent... Sorry I can't say it was better...:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

Keep trying for 'Ohana dinner -- check at the resort (concierge desk) and at the 'Ohana podium. We just love dinner there -- it's on our "must-do" list whenever we go to WDW whether or not we're staying at the Poly!;)

Must-do's at the Poly include: the torch lighting ceremony, spending time one the beach in the evening watching the EWP or the fireworks or both, playing in the sand, the pools, taking the boat to or from the MK at least one time...

I hope you really enjoy your trip! I think you will really appreciate the convenience of the Poly, especially on those days when the kids will outnumber you!;)

GCH -- when you pull up you're underneath the monorail station. There is a nice waterfall and stream there with a cute tiki. But as the PP said, it's not the best feature at the Poly so it's not photographed as much, I guess.

We stayed in the Hawaii building. Honestly, I think it's in the best location!:thumbsup2 Close to the GCH, but still right on the lagoon and beach. The door to the Hawaii building is right by both pools, and it's really easy to run up for a drink and a snack while you're relaxing at the pools. Also, it's really close to the boat dock -- we took the launch to the MK in the mornings -- it's direct and pretty, too. We found the walk to the TTC (to get to Epcot) to be no problem at all, but we don't have any issues with walking.:goodvibes

I posted a thread on the resort board but thought I'd try here since I heard mixed answers.

My question is this: We are going to the POLY in March with me (23) DH (23) my mom (23 + ;)) and my two younger sisters (17) and (5). There are three of us staying in the room that are over 18 so we will obviously be charged for at least one extra adult, but is my 17 year old sister considered an extra adult as well or is it anyone over 18? Do we get charged for anyone additional over the 2 adults in a room?

I think you will only get charged for one extra person on the room (you don't get charged for "children"). I'm pretty sure that your 17 yo sister would not be considered an adult (wrt the room) - she is considered an "adult" wrt the dining plan though!

As far as the room goes your sister is 17 and will not be charged adult rate. She must be 18 to be charged extra adult charge. I went through this with my son so I know for sure!

I'm glad to hear personally from someone with personal experience.

I just wanted you to know, Miranda Stella - that you will NOT be charged for the extra adult!
After reading your post in the other forum, I went thru all my papers again - &discovered I made a mistake when I submitted my proposals to 2 different TA's. It was my mistake in listing my 17 year old as an adult - so I was naturally charged an adult price... Even tho I listed his age as 17, I ALSO listed him as an adult, so I was charged the extra fee accordingly...
I'm so sorry to have confused the issue.
But I hope this is a lesson to everyone - and we check all our documents thoroughly. I'm sure my TA would have found this mistake eventually - and again - I'm so sorry to have caused this confusion.

This time around my DH and I are meeting my mom, and 2 sisters in Disney but their flights come in hours after ours. So would we have to wait for them to use the ME to the POLY? Can I just send their vouchers off to them? If we can take the ME without them, can we check in without the entire party there (it is under my name)?

Just back from the Poly... My family and I spent January 30th-Feb 6th there. I think that if we went in the summer or when the weather was better or if we didnt spend the first two nights of the trip on the phone dealing with problems with our room... I would have a very different opinion of the Poly but because it was rainy and cold and our room did have a problem we didn't get the true Poly experience I think most people have there. :sad2: When we checked in at 9:30 AM we were all so tired- we had been up since 3AM :scared1: and I know check in time isn't until after 3 but we had hoped that we could get into a room and be able to nap before our 5:00 dinner reservation.... we were not able to get into a room until after 4:00 and then the room (which was beautiful and the view was amazing and exactly what we requested!! Fiji 3rd floor marina side) was SO HOT! We tried to turn on the AC and the thermostat wouldnt even turn on. We called for maintenance and they said they would send someone to fix it right away. We got back to our room after dinner and it looked like someone was there but it still wasnt fixed and it was really hot in the room. We called again and they sent someone down... I was trying to get the kids to bed because we had our first big day coming up and we wanted to be rested after being up that day since 3AM and no naps!! The man that came to fix it arrived around 8:30 and was on his walkie talkie, and was so loud my kids were up and couldnt sleep- finally around 11:30 I asked him to go and just bring us a fan. The guy was so excited... he told us if it got too hot in there we could leave the door open and I asked about bugs because there was no screen and he said you may get a lizzard or something but it wasnt a big deal! (Well to me paying $500.00 per night for this room, to have to sleep with lizzards was a big deal!) he left and said they would fix it in the morning and when we got back from the park it would be fixed..... we got back at 4 and had dinner reservations around 5:30..... well it WASNT FIXED!! We had a message from the front desk saying they couldnt fix it and said we could move to a room a couple doors down.... well I had already spent the night before unpacking... we have a ton of stuff! Grocery delivery, clothes for 4 people and when you have a little one you know how much stuff you need to bring. It was going to take me another hour or two to pack and then unpack again! Because of having to call down the front, ask to speak to a manager, then get an Operations Specialist.... who then relays the message to the manager and then comes back with a resolution we ended up being on the phone the first two nights of the trip. We were late again for our dinner and nobody could shower or change because we were all packing up the room... I have to tell you however beautiful this resort is, when you spend the first two nights trying to fix problems it really takes some of the magic away from the trip.

I couldnt understand why the room wasnt checked before they gave it to us. There was a couple of pillowcases on the floor and a towel on the floor in the bathroom... which is no big deal but to make us wait the entire day and to give us a dirty room was kind of disapointing. The thermostat problem was an issue we needed to have resolved.... if this was my home and I called someone to fix a problem the resolution would never be "we just cant fix it" to me this was a lazy way out of dealing with the problem. I also couldnt understand why I had to talk to this middle person (the operation specialist) and not get to talk to a manager. It got to the point that I was in tears on the phone! That night we were moved to a room with a view of the castle. This was breathtaking and amazing to wake up to everyday and fall asleep watching it change colors... but in the end, I would have really prefered to have just had my original room and not have my first two nights and first two dinners ruined because of dealing with our room problems. As you all know, your time is so precious in Disney!!

Sorry for the less than fab review of the Poly.... but I think part of the problem was my expectations were SO high.... I did find it so beautiful and loved the tiki torches and music and the feel to the resort.... but I have to be honest and say that I found POR just as beautiful and with over $1,000 difference in price the Poly just didnt do it for me as I had hoped it would!!

ugh. I've been seeing alot of bad reviews lately on the Poly. It's really making me second guess my decision to stay there. :(
Has this been happening alot lately???

I am sure for every bad experience there are lots more positive ones. We were just unlucky this time!

wow! you are scaring me to death! I know the a/c's are quirky! from our experience, the a/cs do not come on unless someone is in the room. and then if you dont move around they shut off again. I was told this was a "green" feature. I am the type that enjoys the loud fan running all night! I didnt have a problem last trip we just had a maintenance guy make our fan run all the time! when they wanted to move you, they didnt offer to move your things in your room for you? sounds terrible!

I hope you plan on giving the Poly another chance! I cant get my wife to stay anywhere else!:rotfl2:

I was going to say the same thing. I don't blame her for being upset, I would have been also. But its the same at any resort sometimes you just have bad luck. I've been to WDW 25 times and stayed at several different resorts (Poly 2x) and have never had a major problem at any of them, yes I have had things go wrong, including the heat not working on my last trip to the Polynesian but Maintenance came down within 20 mins of my calling and had it fixed within a half hour.

We returned yesterday from a wonderful family vacation. (January 30 - Feb 7th) We stayed in Hawaii, and loved the club level. We had two connecting Garden View rooms. The concierege there were amazing, so helpful and accomodating. We changed dining reservations, cancelled tours, added experiences, needed bandaids and umbrellas, even extended our stay one day. They handeled it all without batting an eyelash.

Loved watching the fireworks from the beach or the lounge. The kids (DS8, DS7, DD5) even got in the pool one day (we are from Georgia, so yes, it did seem a bit cool for us). We watched the torch lighting ceremony one night- amazing!

My husband and I had a nice dinner at Kona one night- ate appetizers and desserts. We also all had breakfast at 'Ohana- good food and great character interaction (especially with Stitch).

Housekeeping did a wonderful job, and we enjoyed our creative towel animals. Turn down service was a nice bonus.

Happy to answer any questions!

Agree with these statements!! We LOVE the Poly & have always had a great vacation there...this past trip we had many issues in our room but that wouldn't stop us from staying there again-we stayed CL & the CMs made calls for the problems too..oh well-I guess it's just the luck of the draw as far as room problems go-but I also agree when you pay what you pay a night at a deluxe you definitely want the issues resolved asap.

We were there January 15-23. The air in our room was broken too. Tahiti building. We changed in the morning to Raratona and had no problems there! It was a pain in the neck to move, but it was worth it!

Bummer! This stresses me about my upcoming first trip to Poly! I've never had this happen at a value!:scared:

Things break down..... in order to fix it, you have to have two things. 1. someone who understands what is wrong with the AC and 2. the part and or technical ability to fix it.

Most of the time I think "trying to figure out" why something is broken takes the longest, then... if they don't have the part on hand they have to go get it and then install it...

I have learned (from lots of travels) that, if you get to your room, and something is broken, it is just better to ask for a different room right then and there... or else risk (as the OP went through) two days of crap....

Once you are out of the room they have more motivation to fix it since it is an empty (non cash generating room)..... once a family is in it.... there isn't much motivation ..... I know that sounds backwards... but it's true
