Hi all!
We are going to the Poly in April -- April 23 - 29th, and are beyond excited to be going! We were actually supposed to be going last April around this time, but my youngest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia, was very very ill, and we were in the midst of very intensive treatments. We have received medical clearance for her to go this April, though, and will actually be there (staying off site) on her Make a Wish trip starting 4/17. We are extending our trip and staying on our own dime (clearly) at the Poly on the above dates.
We want this to be a once in a lifetime trip for us because, not to be depressing, but we have no assurances that we will ever be able to return with my youngest (but then again, who of any of us have any assurance that we will be here tomorrow?). So we are splurging galore and are staying CL TPV!!!
So, after this extremely lengthy intro, here's my question: which would you recommend for us to request, a 3rd floor room or a 1st floor room?
We anticipate spending more time in our room (and at our resort in general) than the average family, as our youngest daughter has serious stamina issues (she is on daily chemo meds, among other things). So we want to be able to step out on a patio or balcony while she is resting. The idea of a 1st floor room appeals to me somewhat, as it might be cool for her and my other daughters to be able to just step out the patio doors and walk out (I know someone would have to lock up inside and go out the front door), but I worry about noise levels, especially at night when I understand people accumulate on the beach to watch Wishes. Also, with lower level rooms you can get noise from up above (people clomping around, kids jumping, etc) -- has anyone found this to be a problem?
I'm not unrealistic re expecting that there will be no noise, but if a 3rd floor room has the potential to be less noisy than a 1st floor room, that's what I'd request (and I understand requests are never guaranteed). I just want to have the room be a place where she might be able to get some rest.
We are SO excited to be going (truly an understatement!). I don't get tons of time to read these boards, what with her medical care and other family obligations, and spend time on the MAW thread, but I have already learned a lot about the Poly from this thread. Thanks!!
Hello...or shall I say ALOHA!!! I recognize you from over on the Wish Trippers thread. I haven't posted there much lately, but I do keep in touch since our son's Wish Trip in Nov 2008. As it turns out, we just came back several days ago from a wonderful trip to the Poly. We stayed in Hawaii as well, and we had a GV 1st floor room. Others can confirm the size of the balcony and how much room you'd have for sitting out etc. My vote is for the 3rd floor room. I think the view would be wonderful from either floor, but perhaps a bit better on the 3rd. It would certainly be quiet with no one above you. The 3rd floor also gives you ready access to the upper lounge. My boys really enjoyed taking their snacks etc up there and watching TV. It was a fairly quiet week amd rarely was anyone else up there. They are 11 year old twins, and they tired of the younger cartoons/shows typically being shown in the 2nd floor lounge. You can consider it an extension of your room, and it would be much more convenient for you than it was for us (we were on the 1st as far away from the lounge as it gets! Not so convenient for our son who is physically disabled, but it certainly gave him some exercise! Our weather wasn't great, so on the one night we were on the beach it seemed a bit crowded to me (there's a speaker right outside Hawaii FYI). There were families with coolers of beer etc...not as magical as I was hoping for...and it might make me think twice about a 1st floor patio near right near the pool.
You'll love Hawaii - great CMs , yummy food, right near the volcano pool etc. If you have other questions, especially anything I might know re: special needs etc, please let me know. We also extended our Wish Trip (we stayed at the Grand Floridian...we splurged too!), so ask away about that if you like (you can also PM me, although I am not on here every day).
Hope this helps!
