ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: January 2012

Super irritated this morning. Don't know if it is anxiety over everything I still have left to do before we leave or if it is justified. Trying to keep my cool but could seriously use a right about now.

I have been asking DH for MONTHS, what he would like to do during this trip...letting him know that it takes PLANNING to go to DW if you want to do certain things. He expressed NOTHING...until yesterday when he started packing. YEP, he waited to be interested until 2 DAYS BEFORE THE TRIP!

Now, he wonders "why arent we going to a waterpark for a day"..."why are we even bothering with going to Magic Kingdom after we get to the Poly at noon?"..."we aren't going to have to wake up early at all during this trip, are we?"

And, so I am looking into - "how much will it cost to upgrade tix?" and "can I change our Ohana reservation?"

My DH tends to be this way about a lot of things. I just politely tell him "That's why I asked you earlier. You should have told me then because its too late now." Before I made ADR's I asked him what he would like to do, but informed him I would only place 25% importance on it because he doesn't do any of the research and doesn't follow my reasoning for planning things when I do

Yikes!!! We haven't stayed at the Poly since the late 80's, but I just booked again for a week in Nov. Makes me wonder if I should consider switching back to the GF. My dad is a huge GF fan and he will flip if we end up in a Poly room in this condition

Not to diminish auntie's experience, because it sounded so disappointing and upsetting (and DH & I would have not been happy), but I think what carl & WDWFan00 said is true. I don't think it's a resort specific problem. You hear about these truly awful rooms cropping up occasionally, but it's not just the Poly. I personally wouldn't panic and switch resorts (we are booked for October). We have stayed at the Poly three times so far and have never experienced a room in that shape. Unfortunately I think it's a problem that could crop up anywhere on site (a completely unacceptable problem IMO, but one that isn't unique to the Poly)

Speaking as a DH I had the opposite problem. I started planning our trip about a year in advance (we had to switch plans and postpone to this past April) and every single time I brought up Disney or asked her opinion on one point or another her eyes would glaze over and I'd never really get a response one way or the other. When she saw the planning binder filling up and me researching sites she would even gently tease me about it. Up until we were actually in Disney at the MK our first day and we were at rope drop, getting FPs, and riding rides with minimal waits did her eyes open and she grudgingly admit that the planning had been worth it and that we would have had a drastically different vacation had we just arrived with no pre-planning.

BTW, on the other topic under discussion our room in Tokelau was very clean and well-maintained with the exception of the bathroom door which showed some peeling paint and rust around the hinges. Small matter and it didn't influence our feelings for the Poly (we LOVED it!). I'm not sure if there was ventilation fan in the bathroom or it just wasn't working but other than that we were quite happy with the room. No little creepy-crawlies either which was my biggest fear and I checked first thing before we went in.

Just want you to know, you're not the only one when it comes to the husband-deer-stuck-in-the-headlights look and requests on the eve of leaving for a vacation!!! It must be a part of their DNA.......I'm not kidding. Seems like I organize and daydream on the DISBoards and plan and reserve everything, the whole time describing in detail what we have previously agreed to, and before you know it, its the "Aren't we...(insert special request du jour that just pops into their minds of what they expected to do while on vacation.) I took votes of the places to eat, showed everyone the menus, made all the reservations, and I also have the same questions bandied about....oh we're not eating at the Brown Derby??? WE TALKED ABOUT THIS!!! The kids decided on 50's Prime Time, with his tacet approval......he was sitting right there!!!!! Geesh!!!
So, just take a deep breath, don't be too irritated, and have a GREAT time!! What would we do without them??

Yep, I have one of those types of DHs too. I just look at him after he is done questioning what I have been planning for months and walk away without saying a word, by then he usually gets it and he hushes up. There was one time, a couple of years ago, I had all of our ADRs worked out perfectly....1 week before we leave, you know what my DH did? He decided to look over our itinerary, and wanted to change a few thing around because he didn't think he would like the "new restaurants" we were going to be eating at. Oh man, he did not hear the end of it because like the PP, I tried to keep him in the loop with all of the planning and ADRs. Note to self, never EVER think DH is listening to you talk about Disney when he is playing one of his war games on Playstation 3 .

I am glad to hear that an awful, FILTHY, DISGUSTING room sounds like it is an anomoly at the Poly...I have switched out of the Poly sooooo many times during this reservation because of my fears. I keep telling myself (and DH keeps telling me) that we need to experience it for ourselves because I don't want my fear robbing us of what could be an amazing experience!

we decided to have a child. that was easy. take her there twice a year!!!

Oh, don't get me wrong....DH loves Disney as much as I do. You should see him on the day that we are to leave for the World, he kind of reminds me of the old WDW commercial where the dad can't sleep because he is too excited . However, he likes to "think" he is helping me plan our vacations by trying to change everything around a week before we are due to leave. I agree with you 100%...when we were dating, I made it well known that I was a Disney fanatic and loved going to WDW. Luckily, he too grew up in a house where they went to Disney all the time and watched all the movies...so when we had kids, we both could not wait for the day that we could take them. BTW...have a wonderful trip

Didn't mean to husband bash.....I apologize!!!
He truly is a great guy, and we wouldn't be going if it weren't for him and how hard he works!!!! Just a little teeny bit annoying when all reservations are made and as he studies MY itinerary politely mentions "can we change just a couple of things???!!!"
Seriously, he LOVES Disney, and 22 years ago that was also a prerequisite before marriage!! I took him for our first wedding anniversary 21 years ago (his very first time) and he talks about that trip and 2 subsequent ones ALL the time. This is our first time staying Deluxe club level. CANNOT wait!!!

Just back from a short stay at the Poly. Two nights prior to our cruise.
Very disappointed. Room was FILTHY. Called housekeeping. They apologized and came in and dusted and vacuumed.
Daybed had so much sand on it..it bounced when you brushed your hand across it. Thought at first I had sat in cookie crumbs or something. Opened blinds to notice that the wood frame on the couch hadn't been dusted in a LONG time, because we could literally write our initals in it..or rather.."clean me". Also the night stand and Ipod dock/radio equally as dusty. Really had us thinking about what else hasn't been cleaned in a while.
While apologetic about the room and they did clean it, later that night we found the sink didn't drain, and the bathroom door had the paint peeling off it, and the hinges were rusted!
Really? even with an AP discount the room was $400(when you add the taxes in) a night! Give me a break. My local Holiday Inn wouldn't keep a room like that, and they charge $139.
Mind you..I am a huge Poly fan. Have stayed there several times. Requested a specific building and room number. It wasn't available and they placed us down the hall. Figured it wouldn't be a big deal. We were wrong.
I might also add..I really don't care for the renovations to the quiet pool. We request Tokelau and particulary enjoy the proximity (and view) of the pool. With the renovation making it all of 3'9"...it is attracting A LOT more of the little tykes. I personally liked when it had a deep end that was roped off. You could really swim..not stand in the pool. Also kept the little kids out of that end of the pool. Volcano pool was like cannon ball city..so we opted for the quiet pool, and it wasn't much better. Maybe it has something to do with the pool hopping? I can't be sure. All I know is that I've read many reviews of the Poly that vary greatly. My experience up to now has always been positive. For quite some time, we wouldn't go near the place because it was dark..and mildew smelling. We deciced a few years back to give it another go, and were pleasantly surprised. It was then our resort of choice.
NOT..anymore. While the issues with housekeeping could be resolved with a phone call, and a re-cleaning of the room. The peeling paint, and rusted hinges, broken toilet seat and clogged drain...that's something entirely different. I'm sorry, but for that kind of money I don't think I should have to call housekeeping to have the re-clean the room. For the bucks they are getting for this resort, this simply shouldn't happen. There is something going on in this resort. It's as if they just don't care. They are charging five star rates..but it's NO WHERE near being a five star resort.

I am so sorry to hear about the two days at the poly before your cruise.

We are doing the same thing in November. Two days at the Poly then off to the cruise. I hope you had a nice time on the cruise. DId you go on the Dream or the Fantasy? Any tips on the cruise?

Yes!! There is a husband and wife team that plan a Disney trip! I too am a Disdad! We plan every detail all the way down to the hour! And everyday our teens tell us how many days we have left! We all sit down and discuss every restaraunt and ride. I make all the dining reservations, my DD17 writes out our itinerary. And my wife and DD17 make a travel binder.

Our first ever trip was to WL. I had no thoughts of Disney when I was researching our first vacation. I searched log cabin and the search sent me to wilderness lodge. I thought "hmm my wife likes riding roller coasters and I like the rustic cabin feel." we had never discussed Disney, never even crossed our minds. But hey the two of us can be happy with different venues. Because I did t know anything about Disney we made no dining reservations no plans for parks.. We just jumped on the airplane. With that lesson learned we now plan everything!

I am SO SORRY to hear about the recent happenings at the POLY.
We leave Sunday by train, arriving Monday and hope to have a different experience for our 5 nights, especially since our youngest is wheelchair dependent. I keep everything pristine at our home and realize we are taking our chances at a hotel anywhere, but we truly don't expect noticeable filth!!!
Un-noticeable will always crop up (hence I come equipped with CLOROX wipes and use baggies for holding remotes, etc. My husband and I are hoping this vacation goes smoothly, as our other 2 children need some fun too, as it has been 8 years since we all traveled together as a family to a vacation destination!!! (other than a 2 night stay at the Jersey shore) Hope the stateroom on the cruise had the upkeep you expect for the $$$. Did you like the cruise and recommend it?

Yes, we loved the cruise!
Would definetly recommend it. Actually, my husband hit the nail on the head when he said the service and housekeeping on the ship is what Disney used to be some 20 years ago. It was apparent to us while on the ship, that Disney is putting their efforts, training and money into the cruise line.(and it shows). Looking to do a another one for next year with the entire family.



Much as I love WDW (and have been visiting for 20 years with the family)..it is no where near what it used to be in terms of service or value. Even feeling that way, we try not to compare Disney now..as to what our experience was then, as it will fall short and I know that.
However, when it comes to cleanliness, or AC working in a room..I have to draw the line. I just can't P away $400 a night because I'm a Disney-holic. There comes a point (and I guess we reached it), where reality kicks in, and the rose colored glasses come off. I had to ask myself would I accept a room in this condition at a Holiday Inn?..and of course I would not. Why shouldn't Disney be held to the same standard.

Additionaly WHY would they allow a room to deteriorate into that condition? Rust and peeling paint doesn't happen over night. Antiquated A/C units need to be updated. While not a housekeeping issue, it certainly is a maintenance issue. The housekeeper was actually very nice and apologetic. I figured problem solved. Didn't realize the drain was working till that night, also that's when we realized the LOUD a/c wasn't working adequately either. The room never got below 73 or 74 degrees. Having had several wonderful experiences at the poly previously, we knew full well what we should be experiencing for the rate we paid. Being that it was such a short stay, the idea of switching to another room wasn't really an option. If we were spending the week, we would have requested to be relocated. I think they stuck us in a less than desireable room because we were only staying two nights. The assumption being by the time we caught on to all the issues the room had we'd be moving on. They were right. Ony..I won't be going back. I also have notified the manager of the resort(complete with pictures) and I am waiting on a reply. I'm not holding my breath.

That would be us! My hubby and I are nuts for WDW! We went for our 1st anniversary and fell in love with it!! I do all the Dissing and ressies, he does all the research.

Trying now to plan a 20th anniversary trip to Yosemite that also includes several days at DL.

i have met about 14 people over that last few years from the dis. mostly dads and a few from another thread im on. alot of resort threads have dis meets. just people who talk to each other on the dis and just so happen to be at wdw at the same.
its funny, i talked to a guy on the disdads thread for about a year. we just so happen to be at wdw at the same time. you just meet the person and its like you have known each other your entire life.
i have met alot of great people from all over from here. if you ever get a chance to meet up just for a handshake and a hello, do it!!!!

Tikiman is reporting on his website today that Disney plans on closing in all of the pool areas and only allowing access to registered guests because of the abuse. I can't imagine the volcano pool enclosed. It will completely ruin the atmosphere/effect. Wouldn't consitently checking ID's and wristbanding be a heck of a lot cheaper and easier?! I will be so disappointed if this turns out to not just be a rumour.

He also says that they are going to install a hot tub at the end of the year (didn't specify which pool)

Regarding the pool hopping... did anyone else read the Tikiman's new update? He is saying all Disney pools are going to be enclosed in the future and that the Volcano pool is getting a hot tub. Work may begin at the end of this year

Very interesting. While I would like them to have better control over who is utilizing the pool areas, I do not want them to interrupt the view either! Hopefully they come up with a viable solution that addresses both of those issues.

So sorry to hear of your bad experience. While I have never experienced a dirty room at the Poly, I have certainly seen the peeling paint but its never bothered me because with all the humidity, I understand why it happens. The rooms are used MUCH more than a Holiday Inn hotel too. I travel a ton and while I might find more 'pristine' rooms, I can't ever find the magic that the Poly offers. So those little things, like the peeling paint, just don't bug me. And as someone who stays at many Disney resorts, I can say these types of things happen at all the resorts.

Now at ALL hotels I stay at, I ALWAYS find something wrong with the room. I used to work at a high end hotel and do the room inspections. So having this background, I make it a point to tell the hotel everything I found with the room that they should check out. If it is impacting my stay, I tell them to address it while I am there but otherwise, I prefer if they wait until I leave so I don't have to deal with them coming in and out. But for every stay, I could tell you 10 things wrong with the room and 10 other things wrong with the hotel grounds/amenities. I'm not saying it is right, but they really do rely on guests for comments - both positive and negative.

None of this means that you did not have a good experience or should have with that type of room. I hope that you were compensated in whatever way you thought appropriate. Disney has compensated me for issues I have had - in different ways but always to my satisfaction.

Yes, these things happen and can happen anywhere. Don't fool yourself into any resort, hotel, or vacation is going to be *perfect*. The best thing about Disney is you are armed with all sorts of feedback from the DIS. So be prepared for what to expect. If you really are afraid you will be disappointed, choose a resort you feel more comfortable with - or try a split stay. I can't tell you that you will love the Poly but I will say that there are many fans of the resort and that the resort offers many great things. We are fans for a reason!
