ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Winter 2011 Edition

ALOHA!!

In exactly 2 weeks we will be at the Poly! Yay!! Looking forward to it... we really enjoyed the Poly last summer, but that visit was kinda short. We will be at the Poly for much longer this summer.

Question.. are there any drinks I should try? I seem to remember seeing people post pics of really cool looking drinks and I am sure it was the Poly... also, prefer nonalcoholic but if anything thinks there is a good alcoholic drink that is a "must" I will give it a try!

Regarding drink recommendations: Yes, I wholeheartedly suggest the lovely Lapu-Lapu adult libation. Many of the Poly Pros will recommend the Pina Colava. Can't go wrong with either. :thumbsup2

Just checking in, trying to not turn green with all these live trip reports. Wishing everyone great weather and a wonderful time at our favorite place. :goodvibes:goodvibes

Also, checking my ticker. As well as wanting to mention, we're paid in full! :woohoo:

Newbie here and it's our first visit to WDW. Has anybody slept on the daybeds at the Poly? My 16 year old is going to sleep on it this trip. He's not as big as his older brother so we're hoping it will work. He's 5'10" but only 160 lbs

we just came back from a Poly stay on Wed. My oldest DS is 17 1/2 and somewhere between 5'10" and 6', depending on who's doing the measuring lol, and is over 200 lbs. Since the boys refuse to share a bed, they took turns on the daybed. Oldest DS fit just fine. If he laid down flat, like to watch tv or read, his legs were to long, but he was just fine sleeping on it. My niece is 15 1/2 and 5'10" or 11", maybe 140 lbs. She slept on the daybed in the other room with no issues either.

You have a similar problem as I do, two boys who will never again share a bed. It was a lot easier when they were younger!:)

My fave drink at the Poly but they serve it other places as well (like CM) is Pina Colava!

Hey Missoutandabout we just paid our trip off Fri! Great feeling isnt it!!

Yea my DS17 (will be one month from18 when we go) will be sleeping in the bed and DD14 will have to take the daybed b/c I just dont think DS will be able to fit on the day bed! LOL

Im wondering how much he will need to bend down in the shower, DH isnt really tall but had to bend his head down to go under it and DS is several inches taller! LOL

Is that the one that comes in a pineapple? What kind of drink is it? Similar to a pina coloda?

The drink in the pineapple is the Lapu Lapu and is a very strong rum drink from what I have heard.....:rolleyes1 The Pina Colava is a heavenly frozen drink. It is like a pina colada with a swirl of rasberry puree. OMG...They go down so easy and it is so refreshing on a hot day. Even DH likes them and he is not a frufru drink kinda guy.

Yea back in 2008 I made the mistake of not reading the menu and thinking the lapu lapu since it came in a pinneaple would be a pina colada.. WOW was I wrong it is quite potent and my head was swimming pretty quickly! LOL

I'm not that big of a Pina Colava fan, but I prefer on the rocks to frozen drinks. The bartenders at the Barefoot make a fantastic Banana Cabana. I had several.....per day. I've since tried to replicate it at home, but it's just not the same. :sad2:

I wanna go back. Now. Right now. This instant now.

You got that right! The girls will share with no problems, the boys will share with their 5 yr old brother, but put the 2 teen boys together- ain't happening!

I remember the low shower heads lol! I'm 5'9" and had to duck under the water. I don't know if they've replaced them in all the buildings, but they have replaced them in Hawaii. Definitely don't miss those low shower heads!

Just noticed your ticker, our DS's must be very close in age. Mine will be 18 the end of Sept.

Count us in here too! They bicker over covers, space, etc. I hope all the rooms have a day bed. Ds14 will love it.

And here I've been thinking my kids are freaks. :lmao: As kids we would have piled in like kittens at the chance to visit Disney again. :cloud9:

Wow. The recipe doesn't sound strong at all

1 oz. Meyer's Rum
1/2 oz. Bacardi 151
Scorpion Mix (half and half sour mix and orange juice)

That's half of what our signature drink in our bar is made of, and I wonder if it would taste better with Lemon Hart 151 instead of nasty ol' Bacardi. 1.5 oz. of rum wouldn't begin to make me woozy, or even make me feel any different than normal, but then I'm a lush. :lmao:I wonder if I can get the bartender to do a rum floater on top for that final kick.

Our signature drink in our bar, Trader Scott's Tiki Bar and Lounge:

The Nekkid Dog (you have to pronounce it this way. If you're naked, you have no clothes on. If you're nekkid, you have no clothes on *and* you're up to something.)

1 oz. vanilla vodka
1 oz. Buttershots liqueur
1 oz. Sailor Jerry spiced rum

Pour all three over ice in a shaker. Shake thoroughly. Pour mixture, ice and all, into a pilsner or highball glass. Top with creme soda and stir gently.

We limit people to two of them. :thumbsup2

Sounds like a good drink phinz. I've seen some of your posts on Tiki Central (occasional lurker there). Your place looks amazing!

But the half ounce of Bacardi 151 is 151 proof! Regular rum is only 80 proof so that is some POTENT rum!

Exactly!! :thumbsup2

Another Disney drink we really like is the Magical Star. It's an "on the rocks" drink served with the blinkie ice cube (free souvie!). We make them at home all the time, complete with the blinkie cubes from our trip. :lmao:

1 oz Malibu
1 oz X Rated Fusion (a mango/blood orange/passion fruit infused french vodka)
1 oz Sour mix
1 oz Pineapple juice

We usually make them in batches and just use equal parts of each. :cloud9:

Have not stayed at Poly for a while, but this will be our first stay there CL-really looking forward to it. Should we request a specific room? We have laggon view. Who has used the cabanas? Anyone regret it?

We rented a cabana for the full day in June and it was AMAZING! It is my new happy place...:cloud9: I WILL get one next time. It was the most relaxing day! We could watch the kids and enjoy our seats. We started our day with a late room service breakfast delivered there, got the fruit tray a few hours in, and then ordered Papa Johns (met them in the lobby) for a late lunch. It was perfect!!! DO IT!!!!! You will be glad you did:thumbsup2

We had the new shower heads last week at Fiji. Such a relief and a treat to see those when we checked in.

BTW, we had planned to stay the entire trip in POR, since my DH and I had stayed there for a weekend birthday surprise in February, but just couldn't enjoy ourselves. Our kids are getting to be too big to share in a double bed plus my daughter really hated the trundle. The mattress is 4 inches thick on a piece of wood. Her back hurt every morning!

Anyway, after 3 nights of it, we decided to switch over to the Poly amidsts oohs and ahs from our children. They were so happy and so were we! It was almost like our trip was beginning anew!

POR just didn't give me the tingles like the Polynesian does! When we walked out our door at POR it was just like walking out our door at home. I've got pine trees. Vacation pines trees are just not exciting to me!

Anyway, our room was, well, roomy and welcoming, and the grounds were gorgeous! Capt. Cooks was great, and the CM at the desk was very helpful when I accidentally threw away my KTTW at midnight!

We did see the tour group of teenagers, but they didn't bother anyone. They didn't chant as far as I could tell! I thought they had very good manners.

The monorail did stop a few times but we just rolled with it and played marathon rock paper scissors.

And boy did it rain! But then it was nice and cool if you could survive that afternoon downpour!

I tell you what, I am never staying anywhere else ever again. I have learned my lesson! And so has my husband! Tee hee!

Yep, all of the rooms have a day bed. Your DS should be happy! :thumbsup2
