ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Winter 2011 Edition

We leave tomorrow morning! FYI I got a call today from the Poly. The Volcano pool is going to be closed for resurfacing 5-23/24 and possible 25th. We had to move our cabana reservation.

Very exciting.. And tragic! But hey your leaving in one more sleep!:thumbsup2:cool1:

Are you freaking kidding me? We go 5/22-5/28 and I was really looking forward to the volcano pool for the kids. WHY in the world would they refurbish a popular pool (OK, they are all popular, but this is the main pool for the resort) during HOT weather? Why not do it during Dec-Feb timeframe?

I will be ticked if that pool is out of service for the majority of our trip and I will be VERY vocal about it. :headache::guilty::sad2:

This was definatly an uscheduled closure.. Probably has a crack, leaking, or needs pump repair.

I can certainly understand your being upset about this. I know I would be. But it does seem to be be unexpected. Even so ... I would not be happy.

In the past, when the main pool was closed for some reason for long periods of time guests were welcome to use the GF pool. Now I know that may not be what you want either .... perhaps if you call in the morning you can discuss options with central reservations and change resorts?

I've stayed at the Poly three times (more than any other resort at Disney) and I really love it there! But we really wanted a separate room for the kids this trip so we went with a 1 BDR villa at WL. We leave in less than 2 weeks and it happened last night - my first Disney nightmare :scared1: I always have weird dreams before a vacation and have chalked it up to 'expecting' the worst so when it isn't THAT bad, I am happy. So while this nightmare was not a surprise, it just makes me all the more nervous. Did I make the right decision? Will I be wishing for the Poly the whole time? I do like consistency in my life and to know what to expect so this new resort is scary for me. I'm pretty sure all will be good (and actually GREAT!) but I thought I'd just post this on the Poly thread. There are so many people that wonder if Poly is really that good and I just want to say that IT IS! So have fun my Poly peeps and I will surely be back to the Poly on a future trip!

I have been up since 3:30 a.m. because of the very same thing!!!! We are not going for another 138 days....so hopefully this doesn't happen to much. We do have an ADR for O'Hana's for one night and I am worried they may have to pry me out of there. However, back to the Poly for us in 2012!!!!!:yay:

So jealous of all of you just heading off to the Poly. Sorry about the Volcano pool - that really does stink - Hoping that it only takes two days so that you can enjoy it at least a little! And although kind of a pain - it might be nice to check out the pool at the GF.

I got the package I shiiped home from Disney yesterday and it was so fun to open! Helped the funk I had been a little. But I really miss the sunshine of WDW. I think that if the sun would shine a little it would go a long way to making me feel better. Wish I could come up with a way to afford the Poly again next year. Instead looks like we are waiting until 2013 for our next WDW visit.

Thanks so much for that info. That makes me feel a bit better. If it is only down 2 days, it won't be too bad. We're planning to do the water park on Tuesday anyway, so I doubt we'll want the pool that day. And on Monday, if they do what you say, we can check out another resort. I was just thinking about hot days and everyone crammed into the small "quiet" pool.

If somehow it is down the entire week, I will likely complain and see if there is some sort of compensation. One of the big reasons we booked the Poly was the volcano pool.

The GF's pool is huge and has a great slide and splash area for the kids. Not ideal but would be an okay alternative. I'd be bummed too if the volcano pool is closed when we go, that was one of my selling points on getting the kids to be excited about the Poly.

Thanks for the info on the pool down time.

We arrive 5/27 and have a cabana booked that day - sounds like they'll let us know if we'll be affected.

GFs pool *is* huge, but man - that's just not the atmosphere where I'd like to start our vacation :sad2:

Just to add a comment about the pool closure. When we were there two years ago there was an unexpected closure of the slide (I believe the pool was still open, but the slide was out of service). In order to accommodate guests they ran a water launch specifically to take guests over to the GF to use the pool. Hopefully they will have something similar running during this outage.

That's good to know! That would be more enjoyable, I would think, than climbing aboard the (very chilly air conditioned) monorail to make the loop back.

There is also a walkway between the two resorts ... and it takes about 10 minutes to walk from Polynesian pool to GF pool at a leisurely pace (although in the hot summer sun that 10 minute can seem long).

Will be at Poly 6/25 with 3 families. Thanks to a daughter-in-law who knows what she wants we booked the Poly. Nothing but the best!

Well we arrived here at about 3:30 pm and got a snack at Capt Cooks. We are so pleased with the weather! 10x better than last July and this evening there was a breeze and I wasn;t hot at all. We are in Tokelau but DD remembered seeing the castle last year o well. We had dinner at Liberty Tree and rode a few rides.

It's a sad sad night. :sad2: After being here a week we are checking out tomorrow and heading home. What a WONDERFUL stay in Hawaii! I am definitely spoiled with the CL now and enjoyed every minute of it! :goodvibes If funds allow it again I will DEFINITELY stay CL again! My next trip isn't until November... BUT, on the positive side... it will give me plenty of time to save for the TPV CL instead of GV CL! :rotfl2:

I will post a trip report when I get home!

Have a lovely time! Don't you love that tropical breeze?

Hope that you have a safe trip home!!! I know that sad feeling! That was me a week ago... and I don't know if it was totally the leaving hawaii or the fact that it rained ALL WEEK here - but I am only starting to come out of my PPD! That TPV CL souds nice!!!

If it was an unscheduled repair rather than a refurb they didn't tell you about, I don't see why you would seek compensation. If they truly dropped the ball, I could see complaining, but if it's something that needs to be fixed to keep the pool functioning and safe, I wouldn't be asking for anything. Every day is someone's "once in a lifetime" at WDW, whether it's the hotel they booked, the ride they hoped to ride, the pool they wanted to use or even the trip itself. Unfortunately, things have to close sometimes, and it will always fall during someone's trip. It's happening to us this summer at DL, but it's definitely not a huge deal in the grand scheme. Take a breath, and remember you're at Disney. A pool won't make or break your trip. Unless, of course, it's SAB. ;) Enjoy your trip, and here's hoping for some volcano magic for at least part of it! :wizard:
