ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Going from April 23rd to May7th 2011, staying CL. Traveling will be me and DW, DD-8y and DS 18.
I was happy to find this thread. Reviews vary so much from tragic to excellent so for a time was a bit worried we made the wrong (expensive) choice but starting to feel better now.
With 18 degrees Celsius below zero, wind and snow here the idea of a tropical "get away" is what keeps us getting up in the morning.....
Not trying to think of the 20-22 hours of travel time by air to get there, kind of focusing on the arriving part.

Warm wishes from very cold Norway to you all.

:welcome: to the Polynesian thread! We have been CL guests since the mid-90s and have never had a horrible stay. Some have been better than others, but none that would stop us from returning. Be forewarned, however, you may be spoiled for any future trips. It's tough to go back to a non-CL room!

If you have any questions, there are plenty of us here who can help you out!
:welcome:

I follow this thread as best I can, but I must confess to not carefully reading every page, so I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed...

Has anyone done a resort photopass session at the Polynesian? My family has a session booked in January and I was wondering if anyone could share their experience, tips, photos, etc.

Any informaton would be appreciated!
Thanks!~:flower3:

My family did a photopass session at the Polynesian in October. Some of the pictures are better than others, but overall we were very happy with them. The photographer took some pictures out front with the pond/waterfall in the background, in the lobby, outside on the grass, and on the beach.

Unfortunately, the pictures on the beach didn't turn out as well as I would have liked because the sun was in our eyes. Our appointment was at 4:45. The photographer did a great job, and I would definitely do it again.

Thanks, MickeyMinnie1971! I'm glad to hear you were happy with the photos overall and that the photographer did a great job. I'm not expecting true professional photos, just some nice family memories. Our appt. is early in the morning, so hopefully the sun won't be too much in our eyes for beach photos. Thank you!:flower3:

We did a session at the Poly in May 2009. That was under the old pricing structure, so I think I only paid $70 ($75?) since we had pre-ordered the photopass (through a share). For that price, we were VERY happy! I think I only paid about $14 for the photopass share, so it was a great deal for all that.

Some shots were great, some were OK, none were horrible. I'm always the photographer, never in the shots (and usually, I really don't mind!), so it was nice to get some family shots. Our photographer was great, we did inside and outside shots. Only thing a bit disappointing is that they will not disrupt/ask anyone to move for a shot. During our shoot, a guy had pulled one of the lounge chairs all the way up to the point and was laying up there. So we could not get any shots up there, which might have been nice. We did get some on the beach with the castle in the background. I understand why they can't ask, but it was just weird that this guy had the chair up there and clearly wasn't going anywhere - not like when folks are taking a walk and looking out and you could just wait until they were done. Some of my favorite shots were of the kids in the hammock.

We got a print package - 7 5x7's I believe? Hard to remember!! And then the CD with all the photos and they were added to our photopass. It was a good deal. Not sure how the pricing has changed.

Pixarmom - will you be CL? Will we finally meet? (I'm too tired at the moment to remember your name and I feel bad about that!) we'll probably go back to bc for our August trip but I thought monorail would be better for my mom, esp since she's always wanted to stay at Poly.

Amanda

Hi again! Whether or not to stay CL is the big issue in our family - we always go back and forth. On one hand, we spend very little time at the resort (we have three boys and the two older boys are pre-teens, so they really like to go non-stop.) On the other hand, the boys are eating quite a bit more than they have in the past, and the quick breakfast and snacks would be very convenient!

Earlier this year, we booked standard at BC in March, and then again at BC in July. We decided to switch to CL shortly before our July trip, but nothing was available with the AP rate. For 2011, we booked garden view at the BC for February, but we're still considering a switch to CL. In January at the Poly, we booked garden view. So you never know - we just can't make a decision and we still might switch!

Hope your mom loves the Poly as much as my parents do! My dad has always said the decision between Poly and BC is one very tough decision! :wizard:

Thanks so much for your feedback! I've seen some of the hammock pics on other threads and they do look so nice.
I can't believe how much the prices have gone up since it all started and to even when you had yours done~
The price is now $99 for 20 mins. and $125 for 40 mins. No package, no prints, or anything. And you can't add park photopass onto it anymore. At least this is what I'm told with the CM I booked with.
We are doing the 40 min. session, but we have 16 people in our group, and we are splitting the cost amongst us otherwise I would not pay that for just my own family.

Just booked our flight, so I guess we really ARE "goin' to DISNEY WORLD!!!":banana: Figured I better book today since the earliest, cheapest, non-stop SW flight from Pittsburgh was SOLD OUT already, 162 away from our departure date!?
Does anyone else get really nervous booking flights online? It is SO stressful, triple checking everything before clicking that final button. Can you tell that I'm not a "seasoned traveler"? :lmao:

CONGRATS! I totally understand...I made ressies recently ..and felt the same way ;) Going to the poly for the first time since I was 17 and cannot believe it!:wizard: :banana::banana::banana::banana:

I love your excitement!:yay:
The good thing about flying SW is that if you do make a mistake, it's easy to fix. I kind of know from experience!:rolleyes1

This might belong on some other thread, but since y'all are my Poly-peeps, I'll start here!

My husband shattered his middle finger this past weekend (35 lb. quartz boulder-1, DH-0), and will be having surgery to insert pins and screws on Monday, and then we're looking at about a two- to three-month recovery period. We're just about 45 days out from our trip-- our final payment is due the day after the surgery.

He's such a self-sufficient guy that he hates asking for help, or needing help, but can you tell me if someone from the Poly will help us get our luggage to and from the room? We're doing the Magical Express, so I think that will be taken care of, but can you think of anything else I should try to arrange ahead of time to help ease the way for a guy who will only be able to use one hand?

Wowsa, 16 people!! One tip just to help you and the photographer, pencil up a list of who you want together, large groups, smaller groups, adults, kids etc so you make sure you get the key pics your aiming for. 40 minutes will fly with that large of a group.

We also did the resort session when we were there in August, 9:00 AM sitting time. Working with photographers for my day job and being an amateur myself I probably had different expectations and looked at the overall experience with a more judgmental eye, however my overall goal was accomplished so in the end I was very happy.

In Aug you have an issue with temperature variations going from inside to outside and the lens fogs while it's still chilled from AC... unfortunately it takes a while for a lens to warm and in our 20 minutes only the last few images she didn't have to constantly wipe the lens to try to keep it free from haze. In Jan you won't have the huge temperature swing so it shouldn't be much of an issue, but for the 1st shoot of the day on a cold camera it was an issue for ours. The photographer also couldn't get control over her flash so our indoor GCH shots (which would have been unaffected by fog) were either under or over exposed (too dark or blown out). She pretty quickly realized that indoors was going to be an issue so we moved out in front of GCH and took several shots there and on a lava rock before we headed out to the beach. Our photog did much better by the beach in the hammock where she could use natural light, everything there was consistently exposed, however when we moved into a tree (her suggestion) and she added back in her flash she started having exposure issues again. My overall goal was a nice family portrait, and that we did get on the hammock, so mission accomplished and I walked away happy. The fact I have photoshop and can semi tweak the images at home made me feel a lot better as well, but again I may be slightly more critical and want consistency in skin tones when displaying 3 pictures next to each other and straight out of her shoot none of the individuals tones match. Anyhow, below are a handful of the good, bad and ugly from the shoot.

GCH - (disaster in general)

Out front - (was still having issues w/ exposure/focus/haze although getting better)

We paid for the session, CD, 2 5x7 & 1 8x10 package, I want to say it was $140? We also bought the regular photopass CD ahead of time for $99 and I honestly got some great (ok better) pictures there including the one we used for our photo gifts and xmas cards this year. I would still absolutely do a resort session again in the future, especially if it were with a large group, but I don't feel compelled to do it every time were there or even every other year. Regular park photopass I will continue to do for our trips though because I like to have images with ALL of us, and 99.9% of the time it's my face stuck behind the camera!

We returned Sunday late afternoon to 20 something degrees and snow from the beautiful Poly  DD4 has cried every day saying she misses Disney. I will be trying to complete a trip report very soon but in summary we were in Somoa 1604...yay!!! We got exactly what we requested - Samoa, 1st floor, volcano pool side. We were happy with the room and Mousekeeping...the chair by the patio door and the shower side cabinet for the vanity were showing their wear and tear, but otherwise the room was in good condition ( I inspect for a living).

We had half-n-half weather....beautifuly sunny and 82 when we arrived Thanksgiving Day and then 5 days later it dipped down into the mid-60s for about 3 days and just warmed up enough for more swimming on the Saturday before we left for a little more fun in the sun. Rain ponchos were not needed for the whole trip .

As for the Poly - we can't wait to go back - everything was wonderful (and a big hug to Tim the bartender at the pool bar)!!! Unfortunately, I don't know if we will go back at this time of the year again - the secret is out and the parks were PACKED!!!!

Please let me know if you have any questions for any upcoming trips...sadly the only bounceback offer was the free dining they have online currently so no trip officially planned for right now - but I may be the planner for an extended family trip for June 2012 for 20+ family members (insert insane laugh here :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:) If we do this it will be one of the Villas (Wilderness is in the lead) and then we will extend our trip to the Poly after everyone leaves to really enjoy the World.

We had ours done Oct. 21st, and we paid $99 for a 20 minute session. That included all the photos on a CD, and 7 5x7's. I guess the price has gone up recently.

We too just returned from a fantastic week at the Poly. And we too returned to snow. Actually a snow storm - we got stranded about 35 miles from home and ended up spending the night in an icky little roadside motel. It was quite a shock to our systems ... from sitting by the pool at the Poly sipping pinacolavas 24 hrs earlier to a grungy motel room in a snow storm. :scared1:

To be honest, while we loved the Poly last year we were a bit worried that we might grow tired of it and had wished that we tried something different, with all of the choices at WDW. Nothing was further from the truth. It just felt so comfortable to be back there again.

As I mentioned in a previous post we had absolutely no complaints about our room. It was very clean with no maintenance issues. All of the CM's we dealt with were friendly, and we had some especially nice encounters with several of the housekeeping staff (mostly men) that were working in Tuvalu & Figi and a luggage services man.

On the days that we were in the pool (a few days in the middle of the trip were just too cold!) they were not checking ID's, but I don't think it was necessary. The one day not a chair was to be found without a towel on it despite the pool not being very crowded. We were happy to see, however, a CM going around and removing towels from chairs that didn't have other belongings with them. The infamous music was playing poolside, but it was mostly Radio Disney-type stuff that the kids really enjoy and the volume was not very loud at all. It didn't bother us a bit. Everywhere else we could hear the Poly soundtrack.

The Christmas decorations were beautiful. They were very lush and colourful. I actually preferred them to the GF.

I will try to get myself more organized and write a trip report in the next day or so once I get pictures uploaded etc.

MaiaPapaya and 1971dbday, thank you so much for the reports! It is so nice to read things like this. I am really hoping we will like it... But I'm sure we will LOVE it! We leave TOMORROW MORNING! I am beyond excited! We spend two nights at the GF and then 6 at the Poly (we check in there Fri).

It is hard to believe we have been at the Poly for 4 days. Mousekeeping has been excellent. Room is cleaned very early in the day. WE had towel animals only on the first day. CL lounge offerings have replenished in a timely matter. Also, if you ask the people who work in the lounge will try to accommodate you.

Though the high today was 54 degrees, people were swimming.

At first I didn't think I would like a first floor room, thinking our TPV wouldn't be as nice, but the view is great and we have enjoyed the patio.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. For those who are heading down, say hello. I have a green pin that says DIS attached to my purse. I have only met one other Diser so far.

For those heading down between 12/19 & 1/1 this was just posted on the parks blog...
