Almost talked myself into BLT instead of resale

I had planned on buying BCV or BWV at resale first and then doing an add-on at BLT probably the followign year. Then DVC offered DPs and now with the rumoured minimum point increase coming (when???) I was thinking I should do BLT first.

Any opinions?

I would do BLT! The resort looks amazing. And to have the monorail right there, priceless to me.:thumbsup2

BLT add-on minimum increases to 100 point minimum on Jan 15 2009.

Think that the minimum for initial first DVC purchase will increase at BLT too but I can't seem to remember exactly

I'd do BLT for the developer points and the later expiration date.

Don't get caught up in the BLT rush.

BUY WHERE YOU LOVE TO STAY!

You will own your contracts for many years. Buying a resort just because it's the latest or often talked about, is a mistake in my opinion. Current incentives or free points will be long gone and you might have trouble booking where you really want to stay at 7 months.

I have read many posts where people report that they bought a resort because it was what DVD was selling at the time and they really don't care for the resort. That makes no sense to me.

If you haven't stayed at the resort that you think you are interested in you are doing yourself a dis-service. You might want to try renting first. Buying into the DVC is not a cheap proposition. You should take your time and be satisfied that you made the best discussion for you and your family.

We had the same questions. We had stayed at the Contemporary and loved the location and styling at the regular resort. We were thinking we would buy at BWV or first by resale and then add-on with BLT but when the new incentive came out for DP- well DH and I agreed that it worked best for us right now!

How many BLT points were you planning on getting? If you do that contract first you will have to purchase 160.

If you weren't planning on getting 160 at BLT then I would do the resale first and you potentially could be closed B4 the increase anyway, or at the very least you still will only be require to purchase 100 instead of 160. That is assuming that BCV or BWV is were you want to have the majority of your points.

Buy where you want to stay. The BCV and BWV can be hard resorts to get into at the 7 month mark.

To answer some of the questions in your posts:

I am renting a four night stay at BCV this January and have booked 2 nights at the Contemporary same trip MK view. I have not stayed at either before.

Overall I want around 300 points so I was thinking of 160 pts BLT and 150 pts BCV or BWV.

Although I haven't stayed there yet I think my heart belongs to the Epcot resorts. I walked through BWI on my last trip and really enjoyed the atmosphere and its proximity to the parks.

I know that I will probably have less trouble getting into BLT at 7 mos (not MK view obviously) and the points needed are higher. So in some ways it looks like resale is the way I should go.

But those DPs are alluring. I have 3 trips planned (some fully paid) in the next 4 months with another one in September and yet another in December so those extra points are very valuable to me.

I don't know how much you know about resale but you have to be so careful with resale----I have this coworker--that despite taking my advise bought resale and when the contract closed found out that there were no points to use (they basically lied to her). She was planning a trip for next spring and can't even use it!!!!!!! My husband and I had looked into resale but decided why deal with the hassle---so we bought right from disney--that way you know exactly what you are getting!!!!!! Not to mention BLT has an awesome location!!!

We went back and forth about purchasing DVC, but as of today, we are new members (effective today!) :goodvibes

We already had a trip planned for this coming June. It will be our first trip to WDW.

We didn't want to pay alot for DVC, but wanted to take advantage of the incentives. Plus with a trip already planned, it made sense to us to use the money for that trip towards DVC.

We also knew we wanted to purchase at BLT because of the location. We consider it to be Disney's version of the W Hotel...sleek and modern. We also wanted the 11 month window for the best chance to get a studio with a MK view.

To accomplish all this, we purchased 160pts at AKV to take advantage of the incentives there as new members. We then purchased 100 BLT pts as a current member add-on. 100 pts is the mimimum for the matching developer points at BLT.

This gives us a total of 260 pts. I did some math, and I think when factoring all the credits and DPs, we ended up paying $87.35/pt total for all 260 points.

If your coworker bought something other than what they agreed to, they should take it up with their Broker. One of the delays in purchasing resale is having Disney verify how many points are available for use. If that step wasn't taken then your coworker may have a legal action against the Broker and/or the Escrow company.

This advice actually worked in my favor. When purchasing my VB contract resale, I repeatedly asked my agent to verify the points. Only current and future were available. Not stripped. Low and behold, AFTER CLOSING, I am checking my points online thru dvcmember.com, and I see banked points!! Never, ever new there were any. Luckily, I was able to use them. It would have changed my plans for the contract if I had known this from the git go. Pleasantly surprised, but I can see how it could happen the other way around. I won't mention what broker it was....

Geez, that's like telling someone the house has three bathrooms, only to move in after closing to discover it only has 2 toilets. :(

All of that should have been verified during the closing process, and the number of points available should be included in the documentation somewhere. Hopefully your friend has that. For all your friend knows, perhaps there is a problem with Disney's system rather than with the broker?

I any event, I'm hopeful your friend has documentation. Regardless of what the broker told her, if her documentation corresponds to what Disney's system is saying and she signed the docs, I don't think your friend has any recourse. Real estate transactions, which is what a DVC purchase is, is highly regulated and if something isn't in writing, it doesn't matter who said what.

Good luck!

I don't think that is the case. There will be fewer than 400 rooms at BLT and I think those with young kids will be EAGER to stay there. We wanted to do what you did...buy at BCV or BWV, but after doing the busses, we realized that being close to the MK is really great.

Also, something to consider- do you have kids? If you have more than 2, the BLT is nice because the 1 BR villas sleeps FIVE. AKV too. You'd have to be in a 2 br villa at BCV or BWV to sleep 5.

Whatever you decide, you will love it!

I was totally opposed to BLT until we went and did the tour. We just bought it this week and I am SO happy with our decision. It minimum buy in will be 200 pts after 1/15...just FYI

Sorcamc, No, no kids, just me and DH and a sad little kitty that can't come with us. I think I am going to go with BLT since resale will always be there and the incentives are nothing to sneeze at.
