We returned to our room one day at AKL around 4 pm. My Dh was putting something in our car, so it was just me and our two boys (ages 3 and 5). I put the key in the door, open it up, and sitting in the chair near the balcony, looking mighty comfy, was a MAN!! He flew out of that chair as if a fire had been lit under him, and dashed out of the room. I then noticed that the housekeeper was in our room. I figured the man was part of housekeeping, or maintenance or something, but then my curiosity got the better of me. I asked the housekeeper who it was and she said it was her HUSBAND!! (he was also an AKL employee). She said he was tired so he came to see her and relax!! After she left, I told my Dh about it, and of course, he was wondering if we needed to be concerned about the condition of our beds!!!!! LOL!!! At first I was a little upset that they were using our room for who-knows-what, but then I just decided I didn't care and as long as the beds looked "fresh" I wasn't going to worry about it!! Would you have done anything about it, or just brushed it off? I figured if my Dh and I worked there, we might do the same thing (just talking, not using the beds!! LOL!!), so I just brushed it off!

I would just brush it off, I have visited my husband many times at his place of employment, and he has visited me. Although this is your room, I agree, if he was just relaxing and getting a chance to say hi to her during the day, not a problem for me...if they were however, in the bed...that would be a problem.

Disney employees work 365 days a year...day/night shifts...so a stolen hello here and there is only fair!

And no, I am not a disney employee, but when hubby and I were younger, we had the work day/night different shifts, hardly seeing each other thing going on...not fun!

  I think the POSSIBILITY of being walked in upon would keep them from doing anything to sully your accomodations-:)

I might be more concerned with the security of my room... but this story seems to check out and seems innocent enough... thanks for the story.:D

Lets see. I think two things would have happened. First, the maid would have left very quickly, then,

A call to the general manager, or at least manager on duty. and secondly, a requirement that that particular maid never enter the room again, while I was there. I believe that both requests/demands would have been granted immediately, as a hotel employee had, basically, allowed unathorized access to the room.

Personally, I would have taken pity on the maid and brushed it off, as you did.

Was your door completely closed? Usually when the maids are working on a room they leave the door slightly ajar. I would have been a little taken aback if the door had been CLOSED, that is a little strange. I'm sure everything was totally innocent based on what you said, though. :)

You mean they don't ever get a day off?? OMG!! how horrible for them.  ;)

I would not have brushed it off. No one belongs in my room for any reason other than the maid. If something comes up missing....and it did once....at least I knew who else was in my room. I would have been extremely uncomfortable and upset about another person being in my room without my knowledge.

Oh....I am one of the most easy going people around....
I would have to agree however... with the previous poster....I too...would have been concerned to find someone in my room who had no "official reason" to be there....
While I would not have "reported" the incident....I would have felt uncomfortable.........
Just my opinion........

I like your attitude Can Be Grumpy. If 9-11 has taught us all something, its that life is too short to sweat the small stuff. This is the kind of thing we should just brush off, he was keeping his wife company, isn't that swell.

The door WAS completely closed. I had to use my key to get in. I had absolutely no way of knowing that housekeeping was even in the room! I was a little afraid for a split second when I saw the man, since I was alone with my two little boys. But when he jumped up and ran out, and I saw the housekeeper (is that the term? Looks weird) I didn't know what to make of it. I first assumed he was either with housekeeping or maintenance, but since he was *lounging* in our chair, I HAD to ask who he was! LOL!! As soon as they both left, I checked to make sure our camera and video camera were still there (my Dh decided they would be safe in our luggage!!! they did not fit in the safe!) and I did make note of the condition of the beds, which still looked crisp! LOL!!! I was just totally taken aback by the incident. I've ceratinly never found a married couple in my hotel room before! But it WAS weird that the door was completely shut. I guess I'm lucky they didn't put that little privacy lock on so I couldn't get in!

OH, then that definitely WAS weird! I'm glad it worked out okay but if that happened again in the future I would definitely say something to the hotel staff. The maids definitely should NOT be working in your room with the door closed. The housekeeping cart should be right outside your door. If those two things did not happen I would be suspicious.

The fact that he got up and RAN out of the room would have me more upset than anything.

Sheesh--He could have explained himself with a simple "Hello! I am just popping by to say hi to my wife...I am also a Disney employee", or something like that.

Getting up and running sounds very strange and alarming to me.

I think that it was odd to have a man in your room that skidattled away without so much as a Hello but, I would assume that he was taking an unauthorized break. We have all done that from time to time. I think that if he had engaged you in a short conversation your perception of the incindent would have been all together different.
I am by nature a chatty person, my sister says that I feel it is my lifes work to get to know every individual. It seems to put people at ease when you try to interact in a casual way. This is not easy for everyone though and apparently not for this gentleman.
If nothing was missing from your room and the beds were not disturbed then I am sure it was all quite innocent.
It is so sad that we have all become so concerned with simple human interaction.
I would doubt that someone who is most likely working for a rather low wage would jeopordize his employment by having a guest catch them doing the Wild Monkey Dance.

I really don't think there should have been a stranger in your room with the door closed and without your permission. I would be concerned. It isn't that I'm against employees having a social life but he could have talked outside of your room if it was that important. I know this is extreme but how do you know they weren't casing the joint so to speak? You don't even know if the man was truly her husband since he left so quickly. I wonder how Disney feels about staff doing such a thing? I have a feeling it is probably a no no even though the guy supposedly is a cast member.

Oh yeah and the fact that he came to "relax" in your room would upset me. I'm sure you didn't pay for a room to have staff hang out in it. Just seems really weird.

I can see both sides of the coin here, but I don't think I would have called the manager once the housekeeper explained what was going on. This man was probably taking a much deserved 5 or 10 minute break and talking to his wife. I can definitely understand the split shift/steal-a-minute-when-you-can lifestyle. My DH is a DC cop, and I work in the city. It's not unusual for him to come by in his cruiser at some point when we're overlapping. We'll sometimes just sit in the car for 2 or 3 minutes enjoying each others company. I wouldn't want to get someone in trouble for something that I know really makes my day. The judgement of being in someone else's hotel room is obviously lacking, but I'd be willing to bet he just came by to say 'hi' to her, and ended up sitting for a moment.... Kind of sweet actually! (as long as there was no hanky panky, of course!)

Erin :D

It shouldn't have happened. I'm sure it's against the rules, probably one reason they had the door shut. But, if he was just lounging in a chair (not snooping in my luggage or the closet), and all my stuff was okay, and everything looked alright, it wouldn't be worthwhile for me to call the manager, etc. I'm sure my attitude would have made it clear to the housekeeper that I didn't expect it to happen again.

I asked someone I know who is a housekeeping manager. Disney's actual policy is that housekeeping is SUPPOSE to shut the door while cleaning the room. This is suppose to be for their safety and for the security of the belongings in the room. Many of the housekeeping staff do not agree with the rule and leave the door open and put the cart in the doorway so no one can enter without moving the cart.

Also, it was a big no-no for housekeeping to have anyone else in the room (unless it is maintainance..if they notice a problem, they call them in) even if they work for Disney. She said it is an offense that they can be fired for breaking...once again, because of security reasons.

Let's recap, the guy was sitting in a chair, probably just chatting with his wife "So hon who is picking up the kids from soccer tonight?", got nervous when you walked in since he knew he shouldn't be there, and jumped up and ran out. Personally I don't see what the big deal is, I would have just let it go. Especially since she was honest about the whole situation. My goodness, all these people ready to string him up, you've never taken a little longer on your lunch hour to run an errand or made a quick phone call on company time? It amazes me how uptight people can be!
