Allowing your underaged teen to drink, your thoughts?

The only states that it ILLEGAL is

As I posted above, NJ doesn't have a state law against this, so you are saying it is legal in NJ...however, many individual municipalities do have laws prohibiting alcohol possession/consumption under 21. So kids can be charged under the local law rather than state law. This is common in towns at the NJ shore, also college towns.

It is common for the police to arrest parents for giving their teenaged children small amounts of alcohol in the privacy of their own homes? Really?

I never said it did have anything with how much you love your child. And if you choose to break the law and supply alcohol to a minor, good for you.

You don't approve. We all get that. We also respect that. Why must you accuse parents who do not agree with you of breaking the law? No one here has suggested opening their home to the local highschool and providing kegs and coolers. They simply do not agree that an occasional alcoholic beverage on a special occasion is going to lead to death and destruction. Those of us who do not or did not serve alcohol to our teens recognize that we simply made different choices based on our own parenting decisions.

Sorry to confuse you, actually what I meant (but didn't express clearly) is that it is common for shore towns and college towns to enact their own ordinances against alcohol consumption on private property by those under 21. I'm pretty sure it wasn't aimed at parents in the situation you describe however I'm just pointing out that it is illegal in many municipalities, even though there's no NJ state law against it. Someone posted earlier that under 21 consumption is perfectly legal on private property in NJ, however, that is not always the case.

the legal side of this thread isnt relevant to where this thread is about. in trhe uk, drinking is 18 sex is 16. you cant tell me that drinking the day of your birthday is far more acceptable than drinking the day before when its illegal. the same applies to the sex. this thread is about whether you allow it or not. i have a son of 27, a son of 22 and a daughter of 20. they all say that the "forbidden fruit" aspect of their under-age drinking didnt apply because i allowed them to drink. they fervently agree that i would have shot myself in the foot if i had banned them. also in germany where ive worked, there is no age-limit on drinking. what do teenagers drink? coke. why? 2 reasons. 1. coke tastes far nicer than beer at that age. and 2. who are they trying to impress when no-one cares? forget legal and ask yourself this. do you want your kids to drink behind your back? because they will, no matter how much you say otherwise...................

Old enough to be asked to die for your country then you are old enough to have a beer at home.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post this, which are my thoughts. You are old enough to drive, vote and die for your country I feel you should be able to drink.

My brother is 23 years old and already a Veteran, some of those "kids" have seen things people should never see, if they want a beer or a shot let them have it.

That is how responsiblity is taught, they are going to drink regardless it part of teenage rebellion.

My parents drank when they were 17, it was legal 30 years ago.

I have to totally agree with... "You're old enough to defend my rights but not have a beer with me?!?!?"
However, the law is the law and my children will not be drinking until they are 21.
I teach my children to obey the law but I don't cover up the reality of the absurdness of some laws.

But I think that is why this thread is still going on. It is not (universally) the law. Parents in most states are permitted (i.e it is legal) to give their child a drink.

And for everyone that says the law is the law (not directed at you specifically) I ask do you ever speed? Because it is against the law to go faster than the posted speed limit.
