Alligators in Tom Sawyers Island!!!!

That doesn't sound right at all. It's a Small World is in an enclosed building.....and I don't believe the water is from a river or canal. So how can alligators get inside? Sounds like an internet story to me.

We were standing across from tom sawyer island watching little babie duckies and mommy swimming and being feed, when we saw an alligator eyeing his next meal. I thought it was a fake, but the DS said it was real and was going to have lunch. Sure enough the alligator went under the water and swam right over to the babie ducks and ATE ONE!! I was in shock, things like that don't happen at the happiest place on earth! I was still coming to terms with the whole event when my DS said mom it is like the Lion King - circle of life - you know mom.

Kids are just too smart for those little bodies. DS was right! But when you think about, Disneyworld was a complete swamp area before it was the happiest place on earth. According to a show a saw on the Travel channel- the land wasn't worth a hill on beans until Walt began buying land. This was the gators home for many many years, so I can see why gators feel "entitlement" to a little of the joy we have in Disney!!!

Don't be !! Trust me, if people were in any real danger Rides/shows/etc. would close in a minute!! Besides have you ever heard of a gator hurting any at Disney!!! You have a better chance in going to your car and one is under it - while in Florida- than you do getting attacked in Disney! But that probably didn't make you feel better - now did it?

I realize that water = Alligators especially in Florida BUT I'm really surprised no one has commented on that fact that some idiots are feeding them!?!? The first rule of alligators is NOT to feed them! Once they don't get that food they've been feeding them, that's when they can get nasty and bad things can occur.

I can't believe Disney doesn't try and make sure guests aren't feeding them and that alligator in the picture was huge! I hope they've moved him by now.

I agree. Not sure why they have not moved him out of the park to a better place for it to live. But than again I am sure that he is not alone in that water...... People should not be feeding him - That is the Number One Rule.

I read somewhere that gators have to be at least 6 feet before animal control (or some kind of agency) comes in to remove it! In the rental house I renting this summer, the description said something about gators being seen in the backyard often. I'm so glad our backyard is closed fensed, but it is in the back of a wooded area, so hopefully when I get there I would have forgotten all about this gator thing!!!

Thank god i didn't see any when we were crossing the water to get there. It would have scared the hell out of me.

I hate crocodiles.

You don't need to worry about Crocs, they are not native to the US, now, Gators, that is another story, they are native to the US.
Not unusual to see them in FL.

ITA, but how many people read signs or listen to the CMs?
I love watching the people feed the birds in front of the signs asking you not to.
I fear the sea gulls that literally attack people with food far more than the gators.

The American Crocodile is native to Florida. Because there are so few - endangered - the ones seen at WDW are and will be mainly alligators. In Florida, gators can be anywhere there is water. Always be alert when swimming or visiting fresh water lakes, ponds, creeks, rivers, and streams.

Last summer the train conductor said there are gators in many of the waters in and around WDW- he said that when they get to be a certain length they are removed and that the powers that be are very aware of where, how many and how big they are. They actually have daily gator patrols on the park/resort property.

After reading the Black Widow thread I'm far more worried about those than ever meeting a gator! Now I know for sure I won't move to FL... my DS gets heat rash when he wears sunscreen and now I know there are black widows... too much for this mom!

Ummmm not really. Thank God for Maine. Too cold for poisonus Snakes and Alligator's and other things that bite you and kill you. I love winter.

Just got back. We asked an employee at TSI and he said he was surprised the first time he saw it. Yes, it was still in there as they haven't been able to catch it yet and yes it was very large. Not to worry- he says it usually avoids the guests at the park.

American Crocodiles are found in the keys north to the lower part of Miami-Dade County. They are found in Biscayne Bay. Nothing to worry about in Central Florida as they are not that far north. Also they are basically salt water crocs (will go into brackish water but not fresh normally) so they would not be in the area of WDW even if they were found that far north.
There are both crocodiles and alligators within 5 miles of my house.
