Friday December 17th 2004
Its another sunny start and the troops are all up and at em by 7.30am this morning. I feed and water them and everyone is soon ready for action. Kids are much improved today, so we can go back to the parks, YAY!!
A quick consultation with our all seeing, all knowing Pinecone divulges it will be a warm day today! Kids are dressed accordingly in T shirts, sun hats and are liberally doused in sun cream. Just in case the Pinecone has lost its powers overnight, I pack sweaters and fleeces in the rucksack to be on the safe side. By doing this, the law of sod, will almost certainly come into effect and it is sure to stay hot and sunny all day.
Before we go out this morning, I decide to do a few household chores. And by saying a few Im not exaggerating! Stuff some laundry into the washer, run the dishwasher and sweep the kitchen of kid debris (remnants of a bygone dinner, assorted toys, about $20 in change and 27 receipts from KB Toys
). Rest assured, I know holidays arent for housework girls, and I dont let the side down delegating is the key! Neil is ordered to take the trash out and Nanny Sylvie does beds and bath. 3 minutes later we are done. That will do for a few days!
Brief Interlude 3 Villa Security. Before we left on this trip, I had heard of several instances of villas being broken into and valuables being taken. Because of this, we always take our cameras with us, even if only going shopping.
I also came up with a plan so cunning, that it would put even the Godfather of Cunning, Baldrick to shame! We needed a hiding place for our cash, spare Credit Cards and TCs that we didnt want to carry about with us. I set up a baby change area, with change mat, wipes, nappies etc. Next I took a clean nappy and smeared it with the complimentary Hershey Bar that came in our Villa Welcome Pack (no way I was gonna actually EAT it! YUK). The nappy looked authentically disgusting and inside the lining I hid our valuables. Put the whole lot in a nappy sack (which are see through, so the hideous stain was visible) and left it all near the bin cupboard. Yes, I know what you are thinking! Utterly ingenious and I should be instantly recruited to Crimewatch
.
Needless to say, villa security was not breached, so my brilliant hiding place was never tested, but it would have taken a brave soul to open that nappy sack! Especially as we left a few REAL ones there too we were hoping any potential thieves were squeamish and would run after opening just one!
Oh, yes, you are here to read about the Magic Kingdom arent you sorry, I do tend to go off on tangents sometimes! Keep reading, we will be at MK soon!
Everyone is in the car by 9am and we set off in good spirits to everyones favourite park! Today we are parked in Pluto 20 and Jessie promises to remember this for us.
Alight the trolley bus and arrive at the TTC in good time. Daniel is once again thrilled to be riding on the Monorail again. Monorail black seems to be on again this morning and on we get.
I am grilled by Jessie as to why she hasnt got a monorail named after her. I should explain, that one of the monorail colours is coral and it so happens that Jessies bestest friend is called Coral, hence the jealousy! I try to tell her that the monorails are all named by colours but that isnt good enough she wants to know if she can change her name to Turquoise or possibly Lime so she too can have a monorail named after her!
At last we are at the gates and about to enter! Our progress is halted by a dippy woman trying to insert her credit card into the ticket machine! When that doesnt work, she tries her photo pass, then her room key, then her drivers licence! Finally a CM comes over and tells her she needs her TICKET!! Never would have guessed on that being the case eh? Dippy woman then empties her pockets and produces a screwed up, mangy piece of cardboard, that once upon a time, possibly circa 1984, MAY have been a WDW hopper pass! CM tries valiantly to coerce this limp, bedraggled remnant into the machine, but its useless. Dippy woman is then incredulous that she will not be allowed in, but will have to go to Guest Services for a new one!
If there is a loony in the queue, why is it me that is always behind them??
Eventually, we are in the park and this morning we linger to admire the Christmas tree and decorations. Its pleasantly mild and we spend some time enjoying the sunshine and taking in the sights, sounds and smells of Main St USA!
Thinking ahead to lunch (its never too early to consider food!) we decide we would all like to go to the Crystal Palace, as we had a lovely lunch here last year. I go off to Guest Services to try for a PS and the others do some character meets. Pinocchio and Giuseppe are there this morning, two that we have never met before, so autographs and photos are required.
Manage to secure a table for 1pm at the Crystal Palace perfect!
Today, we want to try and do as much as possible here, as I know that things will start to get busy in the next few days. My Troops are trained to follow me at a hearty pace and off we set.
First up is Cinderellas Surprise Celebration. Prince Charming and Cinders are obviously back on speaking terms after the postponed performance a few days back and the show goes ahead beautifully.
Decide to buck tradition and steer the kidlets AWAY from Fantasyland this morning. Whilst the park is virtually deserted, we want to knock out as much as possible.
We ride Aladdins Magic Carpets, Jungle Cruise and Pirates within 30 minutes this is a record for us! Kids enjoy all the rides Daniels fave ride at DLP was Pirates and he loves this one just as much, singing YOHOYOHO for the rest of the day! Spot some cute Pirate T shirts with Yo Ho Ho on them but they dont have one small enough for him.
Buy some pins at the pin stand Jessie wanted a POC one and also spots an Its a small world one that she must have! Her pin collection is getting so large she looks like Mr T from the A team!
Wander round to the mountains. Jessie is firmly refusing to go on after spotting the drop for Splash Mountain. After her tantrums on Test Track and BTM at DLP, I dont think she should ride Splash.
Neil and I get Fast Passes for Big Thunder and Splash is a walk on, so we start there. We havent ridden this for a few years and had forgotten how long and detailed it was. Great ride! A brother and sister of about 12 were riding in front of us and asked how bad the drop was. We gently wind them up saying we are surprised Disney didnt provide crash hats and a full body harness. We say it with big grins and I THINK they know we are kidding!
We all survive the Big Drop unscathed, just a little damp not from the drop but from those pesky water shooters as you come round the bend! Our little friends in the front also got drenched!
Meet up with Nanny Sylvie and the wee ones who have been admiring Tom Sawyers Island and have built up a very healthy appetite in the process!
Its not long till lunch so we head back via Aladdin and another pin stand!
The line for a table at the Crystal Palace is HUGE so Im glad I thought ahead and booked a table earlier. Arent my family blessed to have such a forward thinker amongst them??
. As it was, we still had a 20 minute wait for a table and said family are making mutterings of discontent about this shoddy reservation system, which they deem to be mainly my fault.
Finally, our pager jolts me into action when it vibrates strongly in the pocket of my jeans. At least Im smiling as we make our way to our table
.
Strangely, its the very same table we had for breakfast last week! Jessie thinks its our own special reserved table and proudly informs the waitress this is OUR table!
There is a huge choice of food on offer and even Daniel eats a hearty feast. Choices include curry, carved meats, veggies, pasta, salads, rolls (with the most delicious chipotle butter) all served fresh. There is a kids bar with mac and cheese, pizza and nuggets. Dont forget the desserts which were exceptionally yummy as well!
I do make one buffet faux pas, as when I get to the carving station, the chef was busy, so I helped myself to a piece of steak. I did notice he gave me a funny look, but thought nothing of it. It was only when I went back, that I noticed that the chef actually carves the slices of meat that I had taken into several smaller slices. OOOps, bet he thought I was a greedy little minx!!
The characters were the same as breakfast, none spending a huge amount of time at our table. The kids are happy, so thats all that matters. They enjoy all of them hugely and we get more photos and more memories!
Leave here at about 2.30pm and decide to catch the Share A Dream Come True parade, as from tomorrow, it switches to the Christmas parade.
Nanny Sylvie is cast in another of her starring roles that of Parade Spot Staker. Find a nice spot in Frontierland where Nanny can rest her laurels on a wall. There are a few more elderly folk nearby for essential conversations about gardening, operations and general retirement issues. I am secretly hoping that Nanny Sylvie may find true love with an ageing Florida billionaire, but maybe thats just wishful thinking!
Neil and I pop off to do Big Thunder Mountain as are Fast Passes are still just about active. The kids are being amused by Nanny and her posse of new OAP friends, so we make the most of it and run!
Neil and I make the most of our brief interlude of freedom and ride BTM twice as we have FPs from Jessie and Nannys tickets as well as our own! Saunter back slowly via the shops!
When we arrive back, we find Jessie in deep conversation with one of the nice old ladies on the wall. They have become firm friends within minutes and Jessie has already found out she is 74, lives in Daytona and her husband (look, him over there!) is grumpy and doesnt like Disney World!
You can rely on a 4 year old to find out the very best information about total strangers!!
We have arrived back just in time as the parade starts only minutes later! We always enjoy this one and today is no exception! We are lucky to be in such a great a spot and get some fantastic pictures this afternoon!
Jessie bids farewell to her new friend and they promise to write! Mummy is wondering if this sweet old ladys house in Daytona is geared up to having families from the UK come to stay!!
.
Kids beg and plead to be let loose in Fantasyland for an hour or two so we comply with that. Ride an assortment of rides and then head over to Mickeys Toontown fair.
Its at this point that Daniels cough (which he has had for a few days now) takes a turn for the worse. He is asthmatic which makes it a cause for concern and foolishly, I had left his inhaler back at the villa. I am actually so worried, that I decide to take him to first aid.
Leave Neil with Jessie to ride the Barnstormer and explore Toontown. We have the walkie talkies if we need to make contact.
This is my first experience with WDW first aid (and hopefully the last). The first person we saw, to be honest didnt want to know. I got the impression, unless you came in with a limb missing or were virtually knocking on the pearly gates there wasnt much this particular soul was prepared to do.
Her diagnosis was He looks all right, give him some cough syrup. Yes, well, he can actually hardly breathe if you could be bothered to look properly.
Fortunately, another lady took over who was much more user friendly and she had a good look at Daniel. She advised we leave the park and give him a warm bath with vapour and she would give him some cough syrup straight away. She also gave me a card with the nearest walk in medical center in case we needed it later on.
Wait for Neil and Jessie outside Caseys corner (unfortunately, still too full from lunch to justify a hot dog!!) and share a diet coke with Daniel. As he is sick, I am indulging him outrageously.
Neil and Jessie finally appear after about 30 minutes (Belles show had just been starting as they walked past so they felt obliged to watch). Hmmmm, I wonder if it was Jessie who instigated this, or certain father figure who has a very unhealthy interest in Disney Princesses this year
.
Even though we were all up for staying in the park much later and doing more rides, we think it wise to head home. Daniel needs his inhaler (which is very rare, he has only needed it about 5 times since he was born) and its not fair on him to stay later.
Arrive home at 5pm and cook some pasta for the kids for tea. Give Daniel the warm bath as recommended by the nurse when his dinner has gone down. After a puff on his inhaler he is much improved and settles for bed soon after. Jessie is also tired from a big day at the park and is in bed at 6.30pm tonight without a fuss.
Nanny Sylvie immediately spots another opportunity to spend the evening with Ty from Extreme Makeovers and makes a lunge for the Rod Of Power (TV remote) before Neil can switch it to a dull documentary on the Discovery Channel!
Neil and I edge towards the door and wonder if we can manage a crafty few hours out. Nanny Sylvie is suitably ensconced on the sofa and waves a distracted goodbye. YESSSSS!
OOOOH, we are FREE! Where shall we go? Toy with the idea of going back to finish off the Magic Kingdom, but remember its the very last Christmas Party night tonight. Lucky people have got a nice mild night, unlike ours you may note the simmering jealousy that emanates from this statement!
We are still in a Disney kind of mood so decide to head over to Downtown for a few hours. Of course, being Friday night, its heaving and it takes one of those hours to find a parking space. Have to resort to trailing likely pedestrians as they head towards a vehicle and hope they are going. This eventually pays off and we park and head to the shops.
It is just as manic in the stores as it was in the car park! We hit the World Of Disney and I gently remind Neil that we get 10% off with our APs in here (just in case he sees anything to buy for his dear wife for Christmas!).
Have a good mooch around the Pin Store as Jessie wants a monorail pin. There seems to be nothing at all with monorails on, except for a Limited Edition Christmas one, exclusive to the Contemporary that is released on Monday.
In the end its so busy, we decide to leave. Tummies are feeling a little empty since lunch was hours away, we head into TGIs for supper. Neil has the fish and chips and I have fajitas. Very nice and only $33.
Back home and in bed at 10pm. Watch a bit of the weather channel for awhile in bed and wonder if we could make any cash by selling them Nanny Sylvies mystical pinecone.
Tomorrow: Animal Kingdom again.
Authors note sorry for the lack of photos lately. Neil has taken them off the PC and put them on a CD which I cant find! When it turns up, I will do a photo special from the last few days!!
