Allergy Question

BACKGROUND:

One of my DD's has allergies. We discovered this when she had a pretty bad reaction one weekend to something. Thru looking around the house, I was able to determine that a change in laundry detergent caused the problem. I rewashed everything in the entire house, starting with DD's clothes and sheets. She has been seen by an allergist, but we are still in the testing phase due to her age and a cross country move.

Last week (Spring Break) and over Easter, we went to Vegas to visit DH who is there for a couple of weeks. The first night I give DD a bath and within 10 minutes she has a reaction to the towel. Thankfully, I had her allergy meds with me, since she only takes it "as needed" right now. Fortunately the hotel worked with us, and was able to get us new sheets for the bed she was sleeping in as well as towels that were not washed in the hotel detergent. And for the remainder of our stay, they gave us the "special" sheets and towels.

QUESTION:

We are booked at POP for 1 night, then AKL for 7 nights in Sept. How would you go about letting the hotel(s) know of our issue. It is not currently on our ressie because it never occurred to me that it would be a problem (DOH!). We are booked thru AAA. Does anyone know if Disney has hypoallergenic sheets and towels available? Or should I just plan on bringing a set from home?

Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

TIA.

If I were you, I'd bring a set from home. I have allegeries as well and sometimes I'll still be affected by what places call hypoallergenic.

But you can guarantee what your own sheets were washed in and that she'll be safe with those.

Forgot to mention that whenever I bring my own pillows (I'm allergice to down feathers and some other pillow stuffings) I also make sure the pillow cases are not plain white. So you might want to plan on bringing patterened or colored sheets. That would also let mousekeeping know not to change those. And it would be obvious you're not stealing their stuff when you take it out with you. ;)

We used to bring our own sheets and towels, but luckily my son has outgrown his sensitivity to some extent.

I agree with bringing your own set from home. Even if they say they use hypo-allergenic linens and cleaners, you just never know. A couple sheets won't take up too much room in a suitcase and pillows squish down nice and flat in a space bag (or a hefty tied at the top). We always bring our own pillows wherever we go, partially for allergy reasons, but mostly because we're just not comfortable on anything but what we're used to.

There are washers available in the resorts. I would just wash the sheets and towels when you arrive, and ask that the resort NOT launder your linens or towels.

It will cost a little time and money, but it's worth it to not break out in a rash.

Bring or buy your own detergent.

My DS can't tolerate anything but liquid tide.

Costs $2.00 a load for wash or 30 min dry.

Better idea than bringing my own sheets! We will have 2 double beds at POP, and I "requested" bunk beds at AKL, but that may not happen. I think I would end up bringing my entire linen closet to cover all contingencies if I bring my own!!

Funny you say that about liquid Tide. Either that or the liquid Walmart brand caused DD's initial problem. I normally used the powdered Tide which she tolerates just fine, but while we were moving and in hotels for 10 days, the liquid was more convinient. Not anymore!

Dear Jessica,
I have a friend,Teresa, who has allergies. She went to WDW with her DH and DS. They had gone to AK and she had a severe allergic reaction to something at AK.She was rushed to the hospital. She was so ill that her family flew in from Louisiana.Staff told her DH that they had seen this reaction in a few other people who had various allergies and who had gone to AK. This is not meant to frighten you but when I read your post and saw that you were staying at AKL ,I would have felt bad had I not given you a heads up.I'm sure others with allergies have done fine but please be careful.

Have allergies & there is something about AK that can really set me off in sneezing fits. Also check to see if dd is allergic to yellow pine dust. There are times of the year WDW is coated with the stuff.

You might also want to bring a thin blanket. In the A/C sheets alone might not keep her warm. I would just bring queen size sheets and tuck them in to fit the beds. I say queen because if by chance you don't get the bunk beds the beds are queen size at AKL. Good Luck.
