Allergies in Pet Friendly Resort

We booked a last minute trip at POR. I just realized that this is one of the Resorts that allows dogs. My husband has an allergy to dogs. It is not severe, but I'd hate for him to be uncomfortable on the trip. Has anyone had any experience with this? Have you had issues from allergies? If I try to request a building that does not allow dogs, what is the best way to approach it?

I stay at POR regularly and have had a problem with my dog allergy acting up. It's bad enough that I really would notice it.

That said... If you're concerned, contact Disney and let them know your situation and ask for a HEPA vacuuming, and a more complete wipe-down prior to your arrival. Should I ever experience an allergic reaction in a room this is what I would request.

Just to get out the ol' soapbox, I would have a lot less to complain about if the pet-friendly resorts set aside a small portion of rooms designated as pet friendly and allowed guests to select rooms that do not allow pets when booking. Much like smoking and non-smoking rooms, once upon a time. All it can take is a pet choosing to spend its time upon a surface that is not normally wiped down by mousekeeping and a pillow or blanket or towel being drug across that surface prior to use and someone could be in real trouble.

We love POR and it was our home resort for years. However, because of the dog situation, we have moved to POFQ and are happy there. Maybe you should try a non dog friendly resort as an alternative?

Definitely ask for a wipe down at the least! I usually call and have them put in my room request section that I must have a room that no pet has been in.....

We were booked at POR until Wednesday, when I realized there were not designated pet rooms. My older daughter is allergic to dogs, and could not sleep in a dog-friendly room. We had Garden view booked, which is where I read dogs might be placed. I asked our TA if moving to a pool view would help, and she recommended we not stay at POR. We are now booked at Coronado.

I would ask for an allergy cleaning. That may delay when your room is ready, but it is the best bet. Keep in mind those rooms are for pets, service dogs can stay at any hotel in any room, so if the allergy is a big concern I'd ask for the deep clean everywhere.

Exactly what I was going to say. A service dog could be in any resort in any room. If an allergy is that big of an issue you should be asking for an allergy deep clean in ANY hotel you stay in - not just at Disney.

but remember any room in any resort could have had a service dog staying there as they are not required to be in pet rooms. plus Disney uses dogs to sniff for bed bugs and yes I have seen these dogs a couple of times

as others have said a serviced dog could have been in any room of any resort and also the bug dogs

I was unaware of the deep clean option! I have a child with asthma and she can NOT be around a shedder! Good to know!

It's a fair point. There's no way to eliminate the possibility of dog allergens. But it's sort of like a roulette wheel; allowing pets in a room vs. only service dogs puts more spaces on the wheel that cause an allergy attack.

And I realize there is a reasonable line. One who is likely to die upon the smallest contact of an allergen shouldn't really expect the rest of the world to bear the responsibility of keeping one alive. At the same time, WDW is cool disenfranchising smokers (which I am not) with sweeping rule changes and at the same time invite people to bring, and leave unattended, their animals.

In any case, despite my paranoia, it hasn't affected me yet and probably won't so... meh.

I always bring up service dogs because there are people that think no pets mean no dogs including service dogs. not that I have brought my pets other than the campground RV sites but my clothes would most likely have dog hair on them from home which could be left in room. plus the times I have seen the bug dogs they were taken into rooms which did not seen to have people there but I don't know if it was just that the guests were out. the time I watched from a distance they went in the middle of 3 rooms then went into the room on each side. don't know if there were guests or if guests were told the dog was in the room

Two of my children are allergic to dogs. I called and had it noted on the reservation. Packed some benedryl and wiped the room down when we got there. We stayed at YC - had no issues and only saw one dog walking outside during the week we were there.

There was a little lap/service dog at WL during our trip this week. This is not one of the dog friendly resorts. He was in his (or she) owners lap in the CL lounge. Though as folks may or may not know WL doesn’t have a true lounge. Seats are around the rails, so not near any food but their owners

point just to reinforce what’s been mentioned. Do not ever assume you’ll get a room that no dog has ever been in

I have a friend with a true small service dog who could have been held as you mentioned. depending on if she could get dog where she wouldn't have been stepped on dog could have been on her lap. dog's job was to alert on medical condition

No, I know that there are true service dogs that can be at any resort. That's not what I was talking about.

I just got back from POR. Three of the 5 of us are horribly allergic to dogs and 2 have allergies to almost everything. We have never stayed at a hotel without at least one Benadryl being taken until this trip. We asked for the allergy cleaning on our reservation and it was perfect no allergy attacks at all. And now that I think about it, we never even saw a dog.
