I was scrubbing down the bathroom - using Tilex Mold & Mildew remover (something I've always used). I was also using some clorox wipes. I noticed that my upper lip felt funny. I looked in the mirror and the left side is swelling up a bit. Could I be having some kind of allergic reaction to the cleaner or something?

I've had this happen while using Comet from time to time, usually in the summer (for whatever reason...?) It MUST be the bleach. Who knows.

Tilex® Mold & Mildew Remover contains bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and detergent-type ingredients (surfactants) oddly clorox® wipes contain no bleach. On the container there will be the normal EPA information and the hazard warnning with the ingredients. If the whipes contain ammonia then that may be your problem as the chemical reaction of mixing amonia and bleach will result in a release of chlorine gas. I would check out that label.

I forgot I had some CLorox wipes in my room. I looked at the label and one of the active ingredients is Ammonium Chloride @ 0.145%. I wouldn't mix them again if I were you. I just happen to be in the middle of a Haz-Mat responder course so I hope this helps.

Ingredients in the wipes are Dimethyl Benzyl Ammonium Chloride, Dimethyl Ethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride and "Other Ingredients". Contains no Phosporus.

It does help, thank you. So what should I do now? My bathroom is half clean. I will open the bedroom windows to let it air out, but how long should I wait before I go back in to finish cleaning?

Should I call Poison Control to see what they say? I can't believe I didn't think about the mixing of the ingredients.

I would air out the bathroom and watch the swelling. As with any other medical situtaion do what makes you feel most comfortable and this is by no means formal medical advice since I am not on scene to acctualy see you. you may just have a odd reaction to the two together.

I left the bathroom and came downstairs when I noticed the swelling. It just looks like I have a fat lip, like I bumped it. It feels like it's gone down a smidge. I did go back up and open the windows and got the bag of trash out of there that has the used wipes in it.

Again the swollen lip may have completely nothing to do with anything you were doing at the time. I just want to reinforce that you should go with your gut feeling on calling anyone or having it looked at since I can't see it I can't really give solid medical advice one way or the other for legal reasons;)

It's ok. :)

I called Poison Control. He said that likely it wasn't the fumes that caused it. He said the fumes would generally cause eye iritation, coughing, wheezing, burning in the throat. He said he suspects that I got some of the Tilex on my lip somehow, such as perhaps it splashed back up on my lip or I got it on my hand or arm and touched my lip.

We're probably in the same boat! Glad everything's okay!

Good to hear and stop trying to eat Tilex :rotfl:

It won't blister. It's like a hive. Benadryl will help shrink it faster, but if it happens again you should head to an allergist.

There are many causes. I get the big lip & hives from hormonal fluctuations. Lucky me.

I considered taking Benadryl, but Benadryl knocks me OUT, to the point where I'd be groggy most of the day tomorrow.

Were you wearing latex gloves? My mom who is a nurse developed a latex allergy.

Just one on my right hand that I was using to clean with, but I use latex gloves ALL the time for cleaning, so I feel safe in saying it wasn't that.

Think of it this way. You got something for free that many women pay a lot of money to have. You got SWELL lips!!!

Seriously, glad to hear it is nothing serious.

Actually...it was just the left half of my top lip. Sure did look purty! :lmao:

My sister and I are allergic to bleach. It's not that uncommon.
