I'm very new to the eBay biz, but have bought a few things with no problems. Now I have received an item that was broken during shipping. I did pay for insurance on the item, and I have e-mailed the seller twice since I received the package. I haven't gotten any response, and I'm not sure what to do next. Communication with this seller has not been great, so I'll give them several days, but then, what do I do? Thanks for any replies!

I would give the seller a few more days to respond. If you still don't hear from him/her--then you can file a dispute with Paypal or with Ebay under the reasoning of "Item Not As Described". Ebay and Paypal will send a message to the seller about the dispute that will most certainly get their attention---and I'll bet they will email you then.

If the item was insured, you will need to save the box, the item, and the packing material for the file to be claimed. You'll need to go to the post office and file the claim but the seller will have to mail you the original copy of the insurance receipt for the claim to go through--so DON'T start the claim until you've heard from the seller. You're going to have to turn the item in--so if it is a minor break and you still want the item--then I would suggest just fixing it yourself and keeping it.

Thanks Wendyl...that's what I thought. I did ask the seller in my e-mails to send me the insurance receipt and I have left everything in the box as is. I wish I could fix and use, but 3 out of 4 cups in a snack set are basically crushed (I didn't even unwrap them). Thanks again!

Request their contact information from ebay; then you can get their phone number and call them to straighten in out. I am not sure which of you would have to initiate the insurance claim.

I have learned the hard way that 1) some Post Office employees will tell you the wrong thing about how to file a claim and 2) That the claim needs to be filed by the recipient who has the broken item and packing materials.

I mailed something to a buyer one time and it broke in shipment. Her Postal Clerk told her that I, the seller, HAD to file the claim and that she had to mail the item BACK to me so I could turn it in and file the claim. Needless to say, once she did that it VOIDED the insurance--and I was unable to submit the claim and get the money back. I now know better.

Thanks for your input! I checked the USPS web site, and I need to take the box, packing materials and packed items along with the insurance receipt and a copy of my Paypal receipt to the local PO. I didn't know about getting contact info; if I don't get an e-mail this weekend I'll give the seller a call. (I hope they actually bought the insurance. :confused3 )
