I was just watching the local news (Orlando Channel 6) and they reported that Marriott will be instituting a complete SMOKING BAN in all rooms at their US and Canadian Properties. Guests who violate this rule will be charged a $200-$300 cleaning fee.

Personally I love the idea of a non-smoking facility. I do feel for smokers, though. Most of my smoking friends don't smoke where they sleep anyway. They smoke outside. I love the Shades of Green because of it's non-smoking policy.

Here is the email I received from Marriott:

In order to accommodate the preferences of the vast majority of our guests, all Marriott® hotels in the United States and Canada will become 100% smoke-free by October 15, 2006.

This is the industry's largest move to a smoke-free environment and includes over 2,300 hotels and corporate apartments under the
Marriott, JW Marriott®, Renaissance®, Courtyard®, Fairfield Inn®, SpringHill Suites®, Residence Inn®, TownePlace Suites® and
Marriott ExecuStay® brands. The new policy includes all guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, meeting rooms, public spaces, and employee work areas.

Currently more than 90 percent of Marriott guest rooms are already non-smoking, and smoking is prohibited in many public spaces due to local laws. Designated smoking areas will be made available outside of the hotel for our guests who smoke.

This policy will enhance the level of service and care we can offer our guests. We hope to see you soon in our new smoke-free hotel environment.

I'm a non-smoker w/ allergies. However, I can see where this could possibly hurt them. Maybe not in any huge way, but I definetly could see them losing some business over it. It will be interesting to see if the new policy lasts or if it fizzles out.

That is fantastic!! I wish the WDW resorts were that way. I'm sure they will be within the next 10 years.

I live in NY and I LOVE not having to worry about asking for a non-smoking table at a restaurant. I would have never thought that NY would go smoke-free! :earseek: I mean, with NYcity and all, I just never thought it would happen.

And when I make ADR's and they remind me that these are non-smoking restaurants, I always make sure I thank them.

I do feel for the smokers though, too. My DDaddy was a smoker until about 8 years before he died of emphysema and he would have had a fit if he couldn't have smoked in a restaurant.(not to mention a hotel room)
