A friend was staying at a hotel when she discovered that there were bed bugs. Obviously I know this is a big deal nowadays but it freaked me out so I looked online about Disney hotels and of course there were tons of things describing bed bugs at all different resorts, the thousands of dollars people had to pay to get rid of them, etc.

omg, I want to cry. I am the most paranoid person ever and this was NOT good for me to read. We're going in January to the All Star Music Resort in a family suite. My ILs are taking us and paying. I kind of want to stay somewhere else, but I know they can be anywhere.

Has anyone here had experience with bed bugs at Disney hotels? Do you have any good tips for avoiding them or for finding them in your room before you move all your stuff in? I'm pretty sure I won't sleep well while we're there regardless now. I almost want to just bring a tent and camp out in the Wilderness Campground area!!!

Unfortunately bed bugs can happen anywhere. Dives, high end hotels, movie theaters, airplanes, doctors offices, etc.

Here's a link I got a while back from another DISer. Good to know what to look for before going in the room and settling in.

I couldn't find the info on your link. All I got was an advertisment for some dogs to find the bed bugs.

My mom always said, it isn't worth worrying about something until there is something to worry about.

I have been going to Disney once a year for 11 years and have never once encountered them.

I know, I wish I could be like your mom :) Ever since having my son I've had major anxiety. If I wasn't currently pregnant, you can bet I would be on some anti-anxiety meds! I hope I can stop thinking about this before our trip and just enjoy it!

Here's the link I was reading: http://bedbugregistry.com/hotel/FL/Orlando/Walt-Disney-World-Resort/

We had issues with bed bugs at POFQ 2 years ago. Unfortunately it was right before our cruise and we all had bites. Our poor DD had it the worst though. Now before we even bring out luggage in to a room my DW checks all over for bed bugs. She pays particular attention under the sheets. We have been back to Disney a couple of times since the 2009 trip and have had no issues.

halfway down the page is a video. At rest it shows a white bed, a finger and a bedbug.

There is no more chance of getting bedbug at Disney as there is at any other hotel or resort, regardless of brand. In the hundreds of nights I have been at Disney resorts in all level of the resorts I have never encountered them.

Your odds are very low. Extremely low even. I wouldn't worry. Disney housekeeping is very good. Have there been problems? Of course, but you have to take into consideration just how many rooms are on property at Disney World - there are over 28,000 - and the vast majority have no issues at all.

The bedbug website you are looking at is full of false reports as well and is not a good resource for information.

Have to agree. I remember in particular a woman who posted over here, right after she posted on several websites, about her "bed bug" bites all over her ankles.

Turned out what she had was "golfer's rash."

She was very embarassed and couldn't go back and delete all the rantings and ravings she did about the bed bugs.

That's an open site, where anyone can post anything. None of the reports are verified. At all. Could be someone with a grudge against the hotel, could be a competitor trying to scare customers away, could be someone who mistook their hives (or golfer's rash, or hives from a detergent allergy, or no-see-um-bites, or mosquito bites) for bedbug bites.

Try not to panic. I truly understand how you feel - just do your homework. It is easy to google how to look for bedbugs. Go to www.bedbugcentral.com - there is a link there on to to check for bedbugs and it is definitely worth learning.

Bed bug registry does have some false reports, but it has many legit reports as well. It is pretty easy to weed through...but I'd not worry about the bedbug registry - it is more important to learn what to do to prevent bringing bedbugs home. For all those who poo poo bedbugs, there is an infestation in the U.S. now - you can even bring them home on new clothing (throw the clothing into the dryer for 20 mins asap). When the naysayers bring the critters home you can bet they will be warning everyone to be careful - it can cost thousands of dollars to rid a home of bedbugs and it is shattering experience.

Just be careful...learn how to check a room, leave your suitcase in your garage and wash all clothes before bringing them in the house after a trip.

We put our suitcases into a large Ziploc bag and leave in garage. I'd rather be super careful and let a few DISers (or others) laugh at me than bring home bedbugs. They will not be laughing if it happens to them.:thumbsup2

Don't change your reservation unless you really just want to stay at a different resorts - bedbugs have been found at every Disney resort, so that concern would not change. Do your homework, be careful, then forget it and have fun!! :goodvibes
