It's snowing here in Colorado so I thought I would finally sit down and start my trip report from my trip to DL. It was a fabulous trip full of fun and meeting fun new friends in 3D. This was a trip of some really special experiences due to a special person's generosity.

My name is Jill and I live in Denver, CO. I've been a frequent visitor to WDW but hadn't been to DL since 2005. I've been reading reports from some of my new Left Coast friends here on the Dis and all the new changes (including Carsland!) have made me want to make it back West again soon. I planned on skipping a park trip this year as I am trying to take a year off to catch back up on my DVC points. Before you start crying for me, I do have a Disney cruise planned in September. I'm on one of the first Southern Caribbean cruises out of San Juan.

I got a bigger than normal tax refund this year and along with an offer from a special friend, I decided to take the plunge and book the trip rather last minute.

I did do a PTR so if you want to read more about the planning check it out.

I'll get the party started in the next post.

Yay! You're getting started on your trip report. Last time I was at DLR was 2008. I really want to go back, especially with Carsland and World of Color. I can't wait for you to get going. :hyper:

Saturday 3/29

After a night of packing and getting the house ready to leave, I finally went to bed around 10 and the alarm went off at 3 AM. Finished last minute packing and headed to the airport. TSA only had 1 line open and the line stretched way outside the normal line area. I have a CLEAR pass but their lane was not open yet so I had to get in line with the unwashed masses . Luckily the new shift of TSA agents came on duty and they got a couple of more lines open. I got through security and to my gate with about 10 minutes to spare for my 5:30 flight.

Flight was on time and pretty smooth. We flew over the Grand Canyon but I was bummed that it was still not quite light yet and cloudy so you couldn’t see anything. Last time I flew to LA via Las Vegas and the views of the canyon were stunning from 37000 feet!

We got into LAX a little bit early and since I was in the second row, I got right off the plane. When I got off, I saw the most beautiful sight every….a Starbucks with no line immediately in front of me. I jumped in line and grabbed my trenta iced green tea with no water and no sweetner and my day got a whole lot better the shot life giving elixir. 

Headed to baggage claim and had to wait about 15 minutes for my bag to arrive. It came off pretty quick and I headed outside to find the rental car pickup. Outside was still pretty cool and I’m glad I had my hoodie on especially when it took 15 minutes for the Alamo bus to finally show up. I swear we saw other companies’ busses 2-3 times before Alamo finally showed. While we were waiting, I took pictures of the restaurant that is the focal point of LAX. I hope I get a chance to go up inside the structure someday…it looks really cool.

The bus finally showed up and I chatted with a lady who was there with her family. Turns out they love Disney and Disney cruises too so we had a lot to talk about on the way to the Alamo office. Once I got there, I quickly found a kiosk and completed my rental. I headed to the garage to find the compacts and hoped to find something cool. I saw a lot of white Chevy Cruzes and nondescript Nissan Versa but then I saw the heavans open up and a light shine down upon my choice….a black Fiat 500! It was mine. OMG, that car is tiny! My big suitcase barely fit in the truck and my carryon took up the backseat but I left the car rental place in style! LOL

It took a few minutes for Google Maps to figure out the route to the hotel and I got lost a little bit but I finally found the 405 and headed towards Anaheim. I saw the signs for Long Beach and mentally waved at Alison and Fran. Once I got off the highway, I hit something wrong on the transmission and I had to manually shift up and down at the traffic lights. It wasn’t until I drove the car later, I figured out that I had engaged the manual/automatic transmission thing by moving the lever over. It was very perplexing until I finally figured out what I had done!

I found the hotel easily and pulled up about 8:45 or so. I checked in to the Anabella Hotel fully expecting no room until the afternoon but they waived the early check in fee and assigned me a room that was ready. I was able to dump all my stuff in the room. The room wasn’t bad. No carpet..everything is either laminate wood or tile in the bathroom. There is a small fridge. I only have 2 complaints about the hotel and that is the walls are paper thin and you can hear EVERYTHING! The other is they charge $15/day for parking and so far, the parking lot is completely full. I had to resort to parking in the employee lot to find a place. I said something to the concierge and he offered to move his personal car and let me have his space. I do hope after the weekend is over that the parking lot empties out a bit.

After dumping my stuff in the room, I headed out to DTD. The walk is fairly easy. I forgot about the shortcut through the GCH so I ended up walking a lot farther than I needed to. DTD was super busy. I stopped in at the WOD store because I realized I forgot to bring a park bag. I had gotten a couple of super cute wallets but I needed a way to carry my phone and camera too. I found a small string backpack that fit the bill. I was able to show my DVC card and save 10%. That taken care of I continued on towards the front gates. The crowds lined up at bag check were huge! There was a cheerleading competition at the Convention Center and the cheerleaders were out in full force. Fortunately, they were mostly well behaved.

After finally getting through bag check, I got in line at the ticket kiosks and after another long wait, I was able to trade in my Orbitz voucher for a 5 day park hopper. I can’t remember if I posted my deal but Ebates was offering 20% any “activities” purchase for a bit through Orbitz and tickets qualified as an “activity.” I bought the pass for $285 but I will get a check from Ebates back in May for $56! Pretty good savings I thought. I was able to exchange the voucher with no issues. (Note, Orbitz makes you put a date range for your visit..I had my dates starting on Sunday, but that was no issue. Disney just issued me a ticket with no dates on it at all!)

On my way into the park, I ran into the DL Band playing so I stopped and watched a listened for a while.

Once I had my ticket, I decided to go ahead and go into DL and find some breakfast because I had only had 1/3 poptart and a small cereal bar on the plane. After tearing up walking onto Main Street, I check with the Carnation Café to see if it was possible to be seated. They put me on the list and it was about 30 minutes to get called. By this time it was getting close to 10:30 and they closed walk ups for breakfast and wouldn’t take names for lunch until about 11:15.
I was finally seated and I ordered the Apple Granola pancakes with bacon. OMG, these were delicious! Fresh apple topping (not the canned apple pie filling!) and REAL BACON! Not crappy WDW bacon. DL is already up on its Florida sibling in this area. I was able to use my DVC discount on breakfast for another 10% off.

Haven't even read your post yet (soon, very soon) but wanted to let you know I'm here!

The park was extremely crowded up I felt energized enough after breakfast to wander around and just look at stuff. I happened by the theater for Mickey and the Magical Map at about the right time for the first show so I waiting. The show was really cute and I loved the interactive stage/screen combo. I probably won’t see it again on this trip but the show was really well done.

Sorry for all the pics, but I really was impressed with seeing the show for the first time.

Continued in the next post.

After the show let out, I hopped on the train and rode it around to New Orleans Square. I had to stop and see the Club 33 sign. I was sad that it was closed for remodeling. I'll never get to see the original now.

NO Square was also a mass of people and the line for Pirates was 50 minutes long and stretched almost to the HM. HM was also a long wait so I skipped both and headed back towards Adventureland. I sighed sadly when I passed Indiana Jones since it is down for refurbishment…I love that ride and wish it was open! Oh well, I’ll have to come back! I did stop by the Enchanted Tiki Birds and watch that show. I love the original show and always sing along (loudly and poorly!)

I decided to call it an afternoon and I went ahead and headed back to the hotel. I remembered to take the shortcut through the GCH this time. Wow, the GCH is stunning! I have got to come back and stay on points there some of these days. After getting back to the room, I decided to make a quick trip to Target to pick up some water and snacks for the room. No trouble getting there but I thought their selection wasn’t great. I found enough to get by and headed back to the room. This is where I couldn’t find a parking space and had to take a spot in employee parking.

I came back and took a shower and chilled out a bit reading and then starting my trip report. I was laying on my bed it when it started shaking. I thought maybe it was just a maid rolling a cart by (duh!) but after posting on Facebook, one of my California friends told me it was actually an aftershock from the big Friday night earthquake! I can now say I survived a real California earthquake! I have now added it to the one I felt in Kansas City several years ago that occurred on the New Madrid fault.

Now that my brush with plate tectonics was complete, I headed back to DL for my dinner reservation. I was originally supposed to eat at the Blue Bayou at 8:30 but I decided to check to see if I could get in early. They were able to get me in within about 15 minutes and then I requested a water view which was actually going to be 45. That was fine with me since it was still going to be far earlier than my original reservation. I took the paper and found a bench and just relaxed for a bit. 15 minutes later my buzzer went off and I was taken to a water view! Much faster than the original promise!

It is sooo dark in BB that it is hard to read the menu. I ended up ordering the filet and gumbo. They bring a basket of sourdough rolls and sweet potato bread that is really delicious. The gumbo was outstanding as well. Big pieces of chicken and sausage. It wasn’t super spicy but had a lot of flavor. The filet was delicious and cooked perfectly. It came with au gratin potatoes that were good but were on the border of too salty. I was too stuffed for dessert. I used my DVC discount again to save 10%.

I rolled out of BB and headed back to the hotel. I pretty much changed my clothes and passed out. I woke up about 2:30AM because a couple of girls were sitting outside talking loudly. I ended up opening the door and asking them to quiet down. They were apologetic and took it inside. I was able to quickly fall back asleep.

Sunday, 3/30

The alarm went off at 7AM. I felt much better after a pretty good night’s sleep. I needed to be at DL by 9 so I got up and got dressed and headed to DTD for some breakfast. I used the GPS on the phone to figure out how far the walk was. It is .5 miles to the GCH and .6 miles to Starbucks. Really not too bad of a walk. The new Starbucks at DTD is really nice. They move quickly and efficiently. I ordered my normal Iced Green tea and an almond croissant. I took it outside to eat and was soon surrounded my cheerleaders (my own personal version of hell!)

They were pretty well behaved and I moved on once I finished. The lines at bag check were not nearly as long today. Once inside the park, I checked in for the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour. I had to wait about 30 minutes (I’d much rather be early than late!). We were able to order our lunch ahead of time and the guide handed out headsets.

I won’t spoil with a lot of details from the tour but we learned a lot about Walt and the tour concluded with a trip inside the apartment above the firehouse.

The whole tour is worth those few minutes’ right there. We had lunch waiting for us at the Jolly Holiday Bakery. I had ordered the turkey sandwich, homemade chips, and the Matterhorn Macaroon. The sandwich was tasty but I ended up just eating the turkey out of it since there was so much bread. The chips were delicious and I forced myself to stop eating them! The macaroon was to die for! It was a bigger version of a coconut macaroon but the top was covered in white chocolate. It was delicious! I will have to pick another one or two up before I leave.

After the tour was over, I joined up with a lady I met on the tour. The park was getting super crowded but we decided to try to ride some rides anyway. We headed over to Pirates and waited the 30 minutes to ride. We were entertained by a group of friends in front of us playing some version of a game on their phone like catchphrase. They were very respectful but having a lot of fun playing. It was fun watching them play! I forgot how much better the DL version of Pirates is! I loved it!

After Pirates, we braved the line for HM which wasn’t terrible. HM was awesome as usual and it amused me to see the Hidden Mickey’s that I look for in Florida are not in the DL version. When we got off HM, the line was stretched way out in the street…we were glad we rode when we had a chance. We walked over to BTMRR where I got a FP for 6:55-7:55 and then we walked over to Space Moutain so she could use her ticket to pull me a FP since she was leaving to go to the airport soon. The FP was for 9:40.

We walked through the Innoventions building and saw the Iron Man suits and walked around the Dream House.

After that we were tired and thirsty and it was about time for her to leave. We stopped at the Starbucks and got drinks and then said our goodbyes. I love meeting cool people randomly at the Parks! I took my drink and found a spot on the curb to watch the parade. I’m not normally a parade person but anything that starts with a drum line, I’m in! It was a nice parade and I’m glad I took the time to watch it.

After the parade let out, I decided to grab some lunch so I hit The Plaza Inn and tried the chicken dinner. The chicken was fantastic! It was a big enough portion for two so I wasted a lot but it was tasty!

After dinner was finished, I wandered over to the Matterhorn. I waited the hour and rode. I like this ride and the DL Yeti actually works. ;)

After conquering the Matterhorn I headed toward Frontierland to use my FP for BTMRR. The ride just reopened after a long refurbishment and I found it super smooth and the dynamite scene is a fantastic addition! Another ride that is now better than Florida! After conquering the wildest ride in the wildnerness, I found the check in for the Fantasmic Dessert party and got in line. I was booked for the 10:30 showing of Fantasmic but they assign seats for both shows at 8. I got in line at about 7:10 and there were already 8 people ahead of me that got the prime front row seats for the second show. After getting an assigned seat, I headed to the hub to watch the fireworks.

About 5 minutes before the show, they started announcing that they may cancel due to the high altitude winds. Sure enough, they cancelled the fireworks.  I’ll try to see them another night. (Spoiler Alert: No fireworks for me this trip)

After the fireworks crowd let out I headed back to the Rivers of America and got my seat for Fantasmic. Once seated, I was brought the box of desserts and my choice of drink. The box had several kinds of desserts and some grapes and cheese/crackers.

I munched on the grapes and some cheese and brought the desserts back for later. Fantasmic is better in DL as well if not just for the Peter Pan fight on the ship. I was happy with the dessert package with the exception of being seated next to one of the stone columns that made it hard to see anything on the river before it came directly in front of me. The last time I was in DL in 2005, the seating was up on the balcony of what is now the Dream Suite. Those are the best seats in the house.

After Fantasmic I headed back to the hotel. I had to get some sleep because the next morning would bring a big Dis meet!

I have now exhausted my pre-written report/notes so I'm going off memory and pictures. :)

Monday, Mar 31

Today was my special Dis meet with Alison and Fran! While planning the trip, I came across the Warner Brothers Studio tour. I'm a HUGE Big Bang Theory fan and it tapes there. I was tossing it around and Alison mentioned that she and Fran are trying to do more "touristy" stuff in their own backyard and would like to join me. I quickly said yes and Alison and I started planning. She booked the tour and I would meet them at WB on Monday morning.

I wasn't sure how long it would take to drive from Anaheim up to Burbank so I left with plenty of time. As I was driving I saw signs for Griffith Park so I turned off to drive around a little bit. I was hoping to see the Observatory and the Hollywood sign but apparently I was on the wrong side of the park. :)

I drove past the Zoo and happened upon the LA Steamers location. For those of you who don't know, Walt Disney belonged to the LA Steamers model railroad club and a few years ago, Walt's train barn was moved from his home to Griffith Park in order to save it. The area is only 1 day a month and today it was all locked up and I couldn't really get any pictures. It was cool though! Something I will come back for on a future trip.

I got back on the highway and headed towards WB. I got sidetracked when I realized I was actually right by Disney Studios. I was looking for the area you see in Saving Mr Banks but accidentally turned into an off limits area. The guard was nice and let me turn around. :) It was cool to be that close though! I would love to tour the Studios someday.

I still had a lot of time to kill before meeting with Alison and Fran so I decided to check something off my California list...lunch at In-n-Out! I found one on Google maps so I headed off to Studio City. On my way I saw the Comcast Universal building. I work for the Dark Side so I was excited to see it.

Soon I found In-N-Out. I was in burger heaven. I'm sort of glad they don't have them in Colorado because 1) I would be 300 pounds and 2) they wouldn't be as special anymore. I got a cheeseburger, fries, and a strawberry shake along with another t-shirt as my old one is getting worn out. :)

I headed back to WB Studios and parked about the same time as Alison and Fran got there. Alison and I went in to check in for the tour while Fran rested. That's when we found out about the tour being booked for the wrong date! Oops. :) Luckily they were able to straighten it out and got us booked for today's tour. Drama over, Alison and I got some Starbucks, scoped out the gelato, and caught up.

Pretty soon it was time for the tour to start so we went and got Fran and headed back in. We toured the back lot and saw a lot of the buildings and jungle area where they film various shows and movies. A lot of the sets were being used for Pretty Little Liars (don't watch!) but I did get to see a few areas that they used for ER (mmm, George Clooney!) and Big Bang Theory. We passed the soundstage were BBT is filmed but they were blocking and we couldn't go in. Our guide said she would try again later. We stopped halfway through the tour to see the museum. The second floor is all Harry Potter which was awesome.

(rusty staples where the "brick" is stapled to the building)

(Saw the "Urban Lights" sign/building on a recent episode of BBT!!!!)

After we were done at the museum, we got back on a tram and went to some sound stages. We stopped at one which was more of a car museum. Alison was glad that nothing was for sale because Fran fell in love with the Great Gatsby car!

General Lee from the movie not the original series.

Gran Torino (movie and car!)

Nerd Herd Yaris from Chuck

One of the many Batmobiles

Harry Potter car

More Chuck stuff

We went over to the prop house where they had the original set from the coffee house from Friends.

Alison checking out the couch.

Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat

We drove back by the sound stage for the BBT but it still was closed. Boo! I did get to see the changing trailer. :) I have to go back...I think next time I will put in for the studio audience so I can watch them film. They just got renewed for 2 or 3 more years so I have time!

(For an even better description of what we saw, please check out Alison's TR..she updated the tour right after and has a lot more details! http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3214169&page=23)

After the tour was over we did some shopping and I got a Game of Thrones t-shirt. (Yes, I'm a nerd and a geek!) Fran treated us to some yummy gelato. After resting up for a bit, we headed out for dinner.

Alison and I had talked while we were planning about having dinner and asked if I wanted a Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives type of place and I said YES! She suggested a place called Johnny Reb's. I looked at the menu and thought it looked yummy. We drove back to Long Beach and met at the restaurant.

The menu looked awesome! We decided to split a couple of meals between the 3 of us. It was still way too much food! I think we sent a whole meal's worth of food back home with Alison and Fran to much on later.

Chicken Fried Chicken

Ribs

We weren't too full to tackle dessert!

Peach Cobbler

Pecan Beingets

After dinner, we called it a day. It was fantastic spending the afternoon/evening with Alison and Fran. They are two fantastic ladies whom I'm so happy to finally have met in 3D!!!

Tuesday, April 1

I was solo again today and decided to finally go check out California Adventure and Carsland. I joined the crowd and headed to Radiator Springs. The Imagineers hit this one out of the park. It is stunning! I immediately hit the single rider line at RSR and was on the ride pretty quick. Wow! Awesome ride! I got Luigi's for a tire change and I'm pretty sure my car won the race. I headed right back to the single rider's line as soon as I got off. The next race I got the Paint side of the ride. So much fun!

I walked around an admired the buildings in the area.

I rode Luigi's Flying Tires...Cute ride and fun but not going to stand in line for it again.

I left Carsland and headed toward the Pier. I decided to stop and smell the bread first.

One of the bakers photobombed my picture!

After leaving the bakery, I headed over to the Paradise Pier area. I stopped and smelled the flowers first. I think I was inspired by MEK and PrincessinOz's awesome photos so I attempted my own flower shots.

Sorry for so many flowers but it was still snowing in Colorado so pretty flowers were a nice change!
