All in one place: Please Post info from your DCL Med excursions HERE

"If you are considering the mysterious palermo one you might reconsider. We paid for the hop on/off bus which got us close to that church and then walked about 5-10 min to the church and paid 1.50E a person to see the crypts. and then we could take the bus around the rest of town which was nice. They sell the tickets for that bus at the port terminal. "

I am interested in this. Can you give a little more detail please? Is it easy to navigate to the church? Where do you buy the tickets for the catacombs? Was their a tour or did you just look on your own? Did you have to wait to get on the HOHO bus at the beginning or after the church?

Thanks!

it isn't too hard. we had a map from the ship and a map from the hoho bus and there were little brown signs. If you don't feel omfortable walking for a bit you might want to do a tour or hire a taxi to take you to the church. the tickets for the catacomes are sold at the church. no tour, though we did here som information from a private tourguide that came in right after us. we lucked out with the hoho bus as we had walked back to the cathedral and gon in and came out and the bus was just arriving.... i know when we got off the ship we got on the first bus of the day the have two routes and the price of the bus also incudes busses to two other places i think (beach and ruins nearby maybe?)

if you have more ?s pm me

Thanks for all the information. The Day at Sea at Maddalena Archipelago does sound lovely. Can you tell me how much beach time there is on that excursion? Thanks!

So has anyone left their kids on board while touring for an all day tour? The more I think about it, I want to leave my kids on board for one of the tours. How was it? Were they bored in the club from 7 am to 5 pm? Thanks...

I would think that it depends on their age and comfortable you feel leaving them. I didn't leave them on the ship because we did all of the tours on our own and didn't want them to miss out. Also, there was no way of getting a hold of me in case of an emergency. Maybe I worry too much, but just the thought that something could happen on the ship and I'm not there to take care of them wouldn't allow me to enjoy. If I was just getting off for a couple of hours to shop close to the ship, maybe. We have some friends that did that while they shopped. It is a very personal choice.:confused3

Thank you Peter! I really appreciate those details. It sounds like the kind of place we would love (and our kids would temporarily tolerate). We will go see Horst in August and will let him know that you sent us! I actually read the original posting a couple of days ago and thought "too bad they don't remember the name of the shop - wonder if we can find it..."

Thanks again for taking the time to let a bunch of us strangers know those little pearls.

Peter was referring to the train to Rome from port. The train station is about a 10 minute walk from the bus (industrial port so there is a bus to the entrance that you have to take). Be sure and validate your ticket in the yellow boxbefore you bord the train. A BIRG ticket will give you the train, buses and metro in Rome.

the cost is about 12euros and it takes about 1hr from civitavecchia,

It depends a lot on the personality of your kids. Do they like camp? Daycare?

My kids had a problem with the noise level of the clubs. They really needed some quiet time every two or three hours. My kids were 9 and 12, and go to public schools, so they are used to group environments. They could have stayed longer, but they just didn't want to.

My older daughter particularly wanted to spend a couple of hours each day on the veranda reading a book.

YMMV. Some kids adore the environment- the noise, the excitement, the running around. And there are quiet spots. Just not as nice quiet spots as on deck or on the veranda.

We're taking our kids on all our tours next week, BTW. Which will probably be more noisy than they prefer, too. But, we're doing this trip to show them Europe- otherwise, we'd save a lot on airfare leaving them with the grandparents and doing it ourselves! We do have music and headphones for them on the bus rides, if they need a break.

:yay: Has anyone on the Magic or recently returned from the Med cruise done the Su Gologone and Wild Sardinia excursion with the land rovers? My "adult" kids want to do this one and I haven't seen any reviews. We are sailing on July 28th

Does anyone know where the bus lets you off in Florence ? We're on the Florence on Your Own tour and I'm trying to plan our visit. Thanks !

Hi,
We have a 4 1/2 and 8 yr old and we are leaving them mostly. It is going to be so hot on the excursions and DCL can get a hold of you if there is a need by the excursion director or if you have a working cell phone. If I took my kids on all the excursions I would here how bored they are the whole time. I think this is a perfect opportunity to have a wonderful vacation with your children and yet do adult things too. Just think what your child might like more, being toted along in the heat and looking at thinks they could care a less about or having a great time with Disney while you are having a good time too. The way I look at it we have the best of both worlds. Children and vacation. Ofcourse it depends on the childrens ages too, older kids might like the ruins and so forth. We will take them to the beach in Palermo and Olbia, this they will enjoy. Don't feel guilty!!! I have heard nothing but great things about kids club.

Make reservations to the colloseum, even if you don't think you'll go. Not charge if you don't go in.:rotfl:

One other question please (and thanks so much for your info!). What time did you make your Colisseum tour for? I was wondering how long to leave between the Vatican and the Colisseum.

Thanks so much again!

do you know of anyone who has take the Day on the Farm excursion in Palermo?

We reserved the Vatican Museum for the 10:30 tour and the colliseum for the 4:15. Our plan was to start at vatican and end at the colliseum since it was closer to the termini station and there is a metro stop at the colliseum. However, we didn't plan on the taxi strike that was going on that day. Which I didn't think would affect us since we were taking the bus and metro with our BIRG ticket. Well, the bus that we were on from the vatican (#62) to the spanish steps was detoured because of the strike and a demonstration that was going on. So, asking people on the bus, we figured out to get off as soon as we could and by that time we were closer to the colliseum. We went ahead to the colliseum earlier and from there went to the spanish steps, trevi and parthenon. The vatican tour is about two hours plus time to see the basilica, which you can skip the line if you go after the tour and take the right side door after seeing the sistine chapel.

We had a nice lunch after the vatican at a nearby rest called tre pupazzi - recommended on the rick steves italy book. The metro is faster but you miss out on seeing a lot of things on the way. It is nice to take both. Be very careful with the notorios bus #64 for pickpockets!

I would love to know about this too. My mom and are on this one and I havent heard much about it.

My mom and I are on the Highlights of Rome and Vatican tour through Disney. My mom doesnt want to change that b/c she feels more comfortable traveling with a planned excursion since this is her first time in Europe.

Anyways my question is, do you think I could still book times at the Vatican or Colisseum even if we are on the tour? I'm thinking no, b/c I have no idea when our bus will stop there but it's just a thought. It would be awesome to skip lines. Let me know if you have any advice on this please :)
