Dear Auto Train Passenger,

In an effort to be good stewards of the federal funding received to operate our Amtrak service, a number of steps are being taken to eliminate losses in our Food and Beverage department over the next five years. Some of the changes being made to accomplish this include the discontinuation of select amenities offered on Auto Train.

Effective March 14, 2014, the Sleeping car lounge will be removed from Auto Train and replaced with an additional Coach car to allow greater seating capacity for our passengers. Additionally, complimentary wine served with dinner will be discontinued as well as the on-board wine and cheese tastings for Sleeping car passengers. Passengers will continue to receive all regular meals in the dining car at no additional charge, and passengers may purchase cheese and cracker trays and other snacks, as well as liquor, wine and beer, in the Lounge car.

While it is never easy to tell you, our valued customers, that we are eliminating some of the amenities, these changes are necessary in order to reduce costs, increase revenues and preserve passenger rail service across our country. If you have any questions or comments about these changes, feel free to contact me using the “contact us” link on the Amtrak.com home page.

Thank you for traveling with Amtrak. We appreciate your patronage.

Sincerely,

Mark Murphy

General Manager, Long -Distance Services

Sadly - all true

We use the lounge car ALL the time! It's a great way to stretch out in the afternoon before dinner, meet new folks both kids and adults and of course eat some snacks and wine. The tables are bigger so we can actually spread out and play games. Then after dinner we watch the movie, eat cookies and have hot chocolate and relax again before going to bed. Even at breakfast when the dining car is full, we sit in the lounge and have some muffins before a table opens up.

No reason to be stuck in your room in the train. No reason to bring snacks on board so it's less to pack. And no reason to squish 4 people in one small room for 17 hours -- I can do that in my vehicle. Hmmm, this will seriously impact our travel on Amtrak next year (already bought tickets for fall)...

Thank you for posting!! I

I will definitely be writing to him and let him know that it's impossible to increase revenue when you decrease ridership!! My family's ridership!

Costs have risen since last year and now services have greatly deceased. Sheesh!

Guess you'll just have to mingle with those in the coach lounge car. Doesn't seem that big of a deal to me. I didn't book a room for the free cheese and crackers anyway.

Not happy. I have roomette booked for both ways. Going to suck being stuck in a room for the whole trip. I wonder if we can get full refund since they changed their policy.

So does this mean there is no lounge car at all? Or was there 2 separate ones?

There were two different lounge cars -- one for coach with just a salty snack mix and one for sleepers with complimentary wine and cheese reception with veggies, fruit, cheese, crackers and wine. This was a great place to hang out and also see the movie -- both things to keep my kids entertained.

Very sad for my family. I honestly don't think we will continue taking the train ... Guess we will see how it goes this fall but I feel like the value of the AT was severely cut but prices weren't and I can't support that.

If I read this correctly it is not just that they are not having the reception but they are not having the CARS at all. No where else to go but your room ... Which is about the same size as my vehicle anyway as far as space goes.

But I do agree with you, maybe I'll just go over to the coach lounge car.

I didn't think you could do this. They aren't separated, sleepers and coach?

It's just divided by a sign that says something to the effect that coach passengers are not allowed in the sleeper section. But the doors aren't locked or anything, at least not the last time we decided to go for a walk and ventured through the door. So I guess sleepers can use the coach lounge car? It'll sure be crowded now!!

I have train booked both ways in Sept. I didn't get this email.

So does that mean there is no more movies since they took away the lounge car for sleepers? Wonder where they are going to sell all these snacks that use to be free?? We board end of July -- curiuos how this will work out. DS6 loves the snacks. Guess we will stop and buy some bf we board.

I'm in Coach so no biggie there,

But,,,,, I'm extremely disappointed in the no wine at dinner thing. Loved that.

And did you notice how the letter says that dinner is complimentary or something like that ... Wonder if they plan to start charging for meals too, in the future. If everyone just accepts these drastic changes, they will continue to make even more (IMHO). Sad.

Most things are being economized and cost-reduced. Americans are getting used to lower quality in the interest of lower costs.
