Yes, you can have your meal in your room but I don't recommend.  The dining car offers a good distraction, more things to see (esp in summer since it gets dark late).  The windows are larger, too for better viewing.  Dining takes less than one hour, so I suggest you give it a try.  Depending on the age of your youngest, they may also find a friend at the table close by to chat with a bit.  You may also be allowed to eat your food in the lounge car ... I'm not positive on this....but I guess you could ask your room steward if they would bring your food to the lounge instead of your room.
