My granddaughter is 20 years old. My question is, while on a cruise, can she legally have an alcohol drink on a port stop, on an island where the drinking age is 18?

While in port, you just need to abide by the laws in the port. It does not matter whether you are on a cruise or flew into the port. However, someone under the drinking age for the ship is not permitted to bring alcohol back onto the ship.

I will also add that while on the ship the drinking age is always 21 and over (except on certain European Sailings) even if they are docked in a country that has a younger drinking age.

At port, off the ship, she would need to follow that country's laws. So whatever country you're in if she's of drinking age she would be able to drink there.

On the ship (most sailings) no drinking until 21 and she is not allowed to bring anything on board. I.e. if you stop in nassau and go to a liquor store she is not allowed to carry it on board to be checked.

Also word of caution as someone who sailed when she was 20 with her parents. Pro tip: don't let her "steal" or get anything from you or someone else on the ship. Doesn't end well.....trust me on that one LOL

And only slightly off topic, but it has apparently been a huge issue on other cruises line this year, no marijuana. Cruise lines follow Federal law which does not recognize medical marijuana. And laws in some ports could be much more strict than U.S. law.

I'm intrigued. Was there some meaningful consequence imposed by Disney?

It wasn't with Disney but another cruise line. Basically, my parents got threatened to be reported which would mean fines or in extreme cases jail time. Ironically, I wasn't even getting it from them but other people in our party.

I was literally weeks away from being 21. So not the best thing to do but not jailtime/fine worthy IMO. We also weren't talking I was getting wild crazy drunk. It would be like a few drinks of someone's to try it.

Not that the threats really stopped me, I just got smarter about it LOL. This was 10+ years ago at this point. I never got caught again after that so I don't know if they would really follow through with their threats or not. Regardless my parents weren't very happy LOL
