If it's raining, does disney give out ponchos to everyone getting off the ship, or just those on disney excursions?

What do you consider essential items for an Alaskan cruise?

What Alaskan themed items were unique to the cruise?

Did you find a shop in the towns you stopped at that you loved?

Which town has the brewery?

THANKS!!!

I didn't go to AK on DCL, but I'll answer what I can...

Shops in towns...
Juneau - I hit the Red Dog Saloon for food, beer, and a couple of souvenirs.
Ketchikan - KetchiCandies!!!!! Dark Chocolate Covered Mint Oreos!!! YUMMY!!!! (It's on the street where the "Welcome to Ketchikan" sign is.) The truffles are yummy as well!!
We didn't go to Skagway, so I can't help there.

Brewery - I assume you're talking about Alaskan Brewing Co.? That's in Juneau.

On our trip a week ago, they were giving them to everyone.

Not sure what you are looking for, but planning for somewhat cold weather and rain are good. We were glad to have binoculars.

What Alaskan themed items were unique to the cruise?
Lots of shirts, jackets, pins, scrapbook/album stuff, Disney Alaskan-themed Matruyshka (spelling?) dolls, and I'm sure some other stuff I missed.

DH and I cruised to Alaska (but not on DCL) in May. At our city stops (Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway), pretty much all of the shops were the same and selling stuff not even made in Alaska or the US.
Our cruise also went into Tracy Arm Fiord and Icy Strait Point which is much less commercialized.
It was the excursions that we enjoyed, not so much the "cities" themselves which were tourist traps near the ports. We did the Deadliest Catch boat in Ketchikan and the White Pass railway and hiked around Mendenhall Glacier park after just getting a shuttle to and from. I have had friends do the helicopter out to the dog sled rides and said that is awesome (but very pricey and they can frequently be canceled due to weather)
Definitely pack rain gear, esp if you are going to Ketchikan. I am not sure that a poncho would do it there, at least it wouldn't have when we were there! Also we found, even in May, that it was much warmer than we anticipated. I packed a number of fleece pullovers and only wore one once. Definitely wear layers to peel off and put back on. Good binoculars are a must, we had two small pairs but I wished we had at least one that was more powerful. We also bought a new camera for this trip, one that had more zoom than our old one.
Juneau has the brewery but it is not near the port (not walking distance).

We always take water bottles on our warmer cruises- would you take a thermal coffee cup? Just second guessing what to pack!!!!

  • check accuweather long term forecasts for weather expectations
  • umbrella and goretex helped me. Waterproof steeltoes were helpful in crowds and hiking in the forests
  • disney poncho's were available to my excursion
  • Love Tracy's new Juneau crab shack

Essential for Alaska cruise? Good walking shoes, waterproof everything, binoculars and a camera (charger, too)
Alaskan Brewing Company store is in Juneau, lots of souvenirs. Not sure where brewery is.
Must see: Red Dog Saloon in Juneau.
In every stop there are outlet stores, all kinds of souvenirs in all price ranges. Lots of jewellery stores as well.
Mostly, we just enjoyed walking through towns, enjoying Alaska! We lucked out, had great weather.

We were on the August 4th sailing and the only rainy day we had was in Ketchikan. They were giving out ponchos to people on excursions, but not for everyone leaving the ship. My DH and son went fishing, not booked through Disney, and they did not get ponchos. My dad and I did the duck boat tour, through Disney, and we did get ponchos. My mom and daughter were supposed to kayak, but it was canceled due to weather. They went shopping instead and did not get ponchos when they left the ship.

It was a nice gesture, but the ponchos were really cheaply made. Mine ripped right down the middle when I tried to take it off.

On board, one unique item that we saw was a Disney Alaska Tervis tumbler. I did not see it in the gift shops at all, but on the Tracy Arm day a little stand was opened up on deck 9 and that's where I saw it. There were only 4. The CM said those were the only ones available on the ship. They went really fast.

If you're looking for unique items in port, you will have to walk a little farther to get past the big tourist shops and the numerous jewelers. There are a couple in Juneau that I liked but I can't remember their names. Same with Ketchikan. I didn't shop in Skagway.

In case of rain, I recommend bringing a ziplock baggie big enough to hold your personal items that you can stick in your pocket to go shopping or to an excursion. In Ketchikan the rain was a steady rain and we really got wet, even in rain gear.

It has some information about Alaskan themed items unique to the cruise in the Treasure Ketch in post #6 along with Alaskan souvenirs/shops discussed in post #9, #17 & #20, if you're interested.

Essential items for Alaska: good walking shoes, layers of clothes, rain gear (just in case), backpack

We just got of the ship on Aug 11. Some people got ponchos (I saw them). We didn't. We went ashore through the main place on deck 3 and they did not have ponchos. I even asked for one.

One essential - extra memory cards for the camera! Unless you're planning to upload pics to a laptop every night (and maybe even more than once a day!). I filled one up when I was whale watching and luckily had a second camera with me (different camera so I didn't want to risk changing cards). I know when I go back in 2015, I'm going to buy one or two extra to have with me just in case.

We bought small totem poles in each of our stops. Nice souvenir.

I also had my picture take with ex-gov Sarah Palin ... well at least a life sized cardboard cutout of her :rolleyes1

I am loving this thread....great question and even better answers..more note taking

Not a lot mostly T shirts.

We just got home today from our Alaska DC that ended yesterday . Would advise extra memory cards. I can usually get away with 1 new 16GM card, but ended up filling that up I the first half of the week and almost filled up a second. Especially if you are going to do any of the excursions with whale watching or bears when you will have your camera on continuous you will take a lot of pictures.

It rained every day except for Ketchican. The best purchase before the cruise were good waterproof hiking boots for everyone. Kept our feet warm and dry. We also got everyone really good rain coats and were very thankful for them.
