Alaska on July 19th, 2011 "Where a good tan is hard to find"

I'm really glad that worked out for you. I was following the big thread about cruising on points and would have been really upset if that happened to us.

This is the largest amount of points we have ever used for one trip. 2 cabins for the 4 of us all on points, which is why I think insurance would be a good investment this time around. I really need to do my homework on that one.

same here...I am not sure how insurance is with points. Do you know if DVC has an insurance that they recommend for such a thing? or have you asked the question to anyone on the DVC boards?

At the risk of coming across like a complete nutcase:rotfl:, I switched hotel rooms again today! I have finally settle on L'Hermitage, and am very happy with my choice and refuse to even look at another hotel! We booked a 2 bedroom suite with the AAA rate. It is a little pricier than our Pan Pacific rate, but is still a great value. It has a full kitchen, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, fireplace, balcony, and a washer and dryer. The washer and dryer is what really sold me, since it will be nice to be able to wash everything before boarding the Wonder. The regular rooms also seemed very nice and very reasonably priced if anyone is still looking around at hotels. Definitely worth checking out!

We have the Pacific Rim booked right now, but are considering changing to L'Hermitage.

I am going to check out bookings right know.....again....:lmao:...for the 50th time at least:rotfl2:...but know that the cruise is booked it is a definite go. :thumbsup2

The stand in front of Waterfront Station is the closest as it's right around the corner from Canada Place.
There is one outside the Sutton Place Hotel at Burrard & Smithe.

You Dont know what a Japa dog is?????

Hotdogs w/ Japanese toppings. Grated radish, plum sauce, seaweed flakes, edamame, fish flakes, fried cabbage, Japanese mayo, okonomiyaki sauce etc. They also have a salmon "hotdog" and I think someone said something about Kobe beef in addition to the regular hotdog (I believe they're pork).

I saw JapaDog on both Samantha Brown and Anthony Bourdain and have that on my list of things to do (or eat!) Funny thing is, I don't like anything on my hot dogs, not even mustard or ketchup! I'm hoping my kids will be more adventurous!

We just booked this cruise - Me-42, DH-42 and DD-11. My in-laws are also going with us. We cruised to Alaska last year (Princess). Can't wait to go back again next year on the Disney Wonder!

We're planning to arrive a few days early to enjoy the sights in Vancouver.

I'm going to book our flights this weekend using our Skymiles. I'm not sure what hotel to book. They are all so expensive!

Welcome aboard!

Did you visit any of the same ports we will be visiting?

Welcome aboard!

Did you visit any of the same ports we will be visiting?

Yes. Our itinerary was...

Vancouver
Ketchikan
Juneau
Skagway
Glacier Bay National Park
College Fjord
Anchorage

We did a Northbound cruise because my in-laws were doing a land tour after the 7-day cruise. Unfortunately, my father-in-law found out he had a blockage in his leg the day before we were scheduled to leave so they were unable to go.

We spent a couple of days before the cruise in Seattle and then took the train from Seattle to Vancouver to board the ship. The train ride was great! We flew home (Atlanta, GA) from Anchorage. LONG flight!

Hope you enjoyed your day off.

I definitely enjoyed mine. The weather was beautiful here in Georgia.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I had my first Labor Day off since 2004...mixed feelings on that one. :confused3

How is the job hunt going?? Thinking of you guys!

Our weekend was uneventful, cold here in Minnesota so that kinda stunk. Today was the first day of school, sent both my babies this year

I think we've decided on our flights --

Atlanta to Vancouver - July 15 (p.m.) or July 16 (a.m.)
Vancouver to Atlanta - July 26 (12:00 p.m. or 12:59 p.m.)

This will give us 2 1/2 - 3 days in Vancouver. Does this sound like enough time?

Has anybody planned a "tentative" itinerary for their pre and/or post cruise days in Vancouver? We have a 11 year old daughter, so our activities will be geared towards things she will enjoy.

I just booked my airfare yesterday. We are flying Detroit to Vancouver on the
16th, taking the train from Vancouver to Seattle on the 26th, then flying Seattle back to Detroit on the 28th. I'm bummed that Delta dropped the non-stop flight from Detroit to Vancouver, so we will have a 2 hour layover...ugh.

I don't think we are going to plan anything big for our days in Vancouver. I want to see Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown, Chinatown, Robson Street, etc. Oh, and Japa Dog, of course!:)

Our flights:

Colorado Springs to Seattle July 9th
Vancouver to Colorado Springs July 26th

Flying into Seattle on the 9th & going to stay a few days in Anacortes - do a whale watching tour & probably island hop via ferry in the San Juan Islands. We'll take the quick shuttle to Vancouver (from Seattle) on the 12th. Hopefully we'll get there in time to watch the Disney Wonder sail out that evening. We'll spend the week doing the things you mentioned above plus Grouse Mountain & Capiliano Bridge.

Only 10 months to go!! Although for now I'm concentrating on our WDW/ Disney cruise with 1 ds in October. We leave 4 weeks from today.

This was posted by another Robin in the DCL board...so thought I would share.

Why Vancouver?
I was so happy that to hear the DCL was going to Alaska…but was kinda uncertain to hear where we would board on to DCL….Vancouver BC, and once I did some research, I was right. Being from the East Coast, it is going to a bit pricey to fly there. OK yes we are spoiled being on the East coast (Virginia) fly to WDW.
I was curious why Vancouver, so I went to the source; DCL. I thought that the DIS board would like to know why. Here is DCL response: (sorry it is a little long, but this is their reply)
Dear Robin,

Thank you for choosing a Disney Cruise Line vacation!

I am happy to assist you.

We here at Disney Cruise Line felt that the city of Vancouver would
serve as a beautiful starting point for our 7-Night Alaskan Cruises.
Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada located on a peninsula in
southwestern British Columbia between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast
Mountains. Also, it is located 30 miles from the United States/Canadian
Border.

Vancouver also has several points of interest and/or attractions for
those Guests who would like to book pre- or post- nights onto their
cruise vacation.

Below are some examples of the different types of points of interest or
attractions available:

1. Stanley Park is located a few miles northwest of the cruise terminal
and borders downtown Vancouver's western side. It is a 1,000-acre
evergreen oasis surrounded by a 5.5-mile paved seawall with numerous
attractions such as the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, Kids
Water Park, a miniature train, a children's farmyard, rose gardens,
totem poles, miles of wooded hiking trails, beaches, playgrounds, and
picnic areas.

2. Capilano Suspension Bridge was originally built in 1889 and is
Vancouver’s oldest tourist attraction. The suspension bridge spans 450
feet across a canyon, 230 feet above the Capilano River and is located
in a 27-acre park. The park also includes other activities such as
Treetops Adventure which consists of seven suspension bridges through
the evergreens that rise 100 feet above the forest floor, guided nature
tours, Kid’s Rainforest Explorer program and Living Forest exhibit.

3. Grouse Mountain Skyride is located approximately 15 minutes from
downtown and is North America’s largest aerial tramway system. The
Skyride provides breathtaking views of the city of the Vancouver and the
surrounding area. The ride starts at the base of the mountain and climbs
3,700 feet in approximately 12 minutes. At the top of the mountain
guests will find hiking, lumberjack shows, video presentations,
restaurants, a scenic chairlift ride to the summit and a refuge for
endangered wildlife.

4. Vancouver Aquarium is located in Stanley Park and is approximately a
15 – 20 minute walk from Downtown. It is Canada’s largest aquarium with
over 70,000 animals including beluga whales, sea lions, dolphins, seals,
sharks and more. The aquarium includes dolphin and whale shows, sea
otter feeds and shark dives.

5. Steam Clock was built in 1977 to muffle steam from underground lines
that were used to heat local buildings and is now considered a famous
landmark. The clock is located on a street corner in Gastown and is the
most photographed structure in Vancouver. On every quarter a steam
whistle rings out the Westminster Chimes and every hour a huge cloud of
steam gushes out of the timepiece.

6. Chinatown was declared a historic district in 1971 and is one of the
largest Chinatown’s in North America. It is filled with photogenic
Chinese structures, lamps, gates and open-air markets. The biggest draw
is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, named for “The Father of Modern China”
and is the first full-scale Classical Chinese Garden built outside of
China.

7. Granville Island is a 35-acre peninsula in False Creek and is one of
the most successful former-industrial-park revitalizations in North
America. It is a small island and shopping district home to performing
arts, art education, dining, artists’ studios and workshops, art
galleries and a public market. Passenger ferry service is available from
Downtown Vancouver.

Therefore, you can see Vancouver has a lot to offer to our Guests and it
is also convenient to our ship Disney Magic. The Vancouver International
Airport is approximately 9 miles south of downtown and approximately 30
minutes to the Canada Place dock in Vancouver.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you require further
assistance in planning your visit, please feel free to contact us.

We look forward to sailing with you!

Have a Magical Day!
