Alaska Cruise (not Disney)

We just returned from a week long Alaskan Cruise on the Norwegian Bliss. We were hopeful being on a new ship would be enough to overlook it not being Disney, but we were really disappointed! There is no comparison to the level of service and the desire to be sure you have an “excellent” cruise that Disney provides. NCL didn’t even provide us with a cruise survey at the end of our trip😞. We will be back on Disney next summer!

That's really too bad! I've heard some good things about the Bliss although I do think in general it's tough to go from the small ships like the Magic/Wonder to a mega ship.

If you don’t mind me asking, could you be a little more specific about what you didn’t like? We have only ever been on DCL but were looking to cruise the Bliss for Alaska due to cost, and would love to pick your brain to find out what exactly made you feel that way.
Also, did you feel like the Alaskan ports were super busy because the Bliss is a mega ship so more people in port versus the smaller classic ships?
Thanks!

The AK ports are busy not due to the size of your ship but because every port will have 2-3 large ships in Port at the same time.

Very interesting - I had booked the Bliss last year (eastern Caribbean) and then canceled it because I just couldn't get excited about it. We did have a great time on our NCL Alaska cruise, though, back in 2003. For me Alaska is more about the ports than the ship.

Out of two dozen cruises on several cruise lines, NCL was the only line we had such a poor experience we won't be back. Princess isn't perfect, but for the $$$$ difference, we're o.k. with better itineraries and better food than DCL offers.

It's my understanding that, generally, NCL cruises are not that great on the service level.

We've been on 4 NCL cruises and never had any service problems. We actually prefer them to the other lines. I guess it depends on your expectations. Or where you're reading reviews...

We did too. We were supposed to take the Bliss for our June 3 cruise but I got cold feet and switched to Disney. We paid a fortune but I really think it was worth it. The experience was fantastic and all of our ports had smaller ships. Our tour guide in Skagway said it is SO BUSY when the big ships like the Bliss come in and they will have several on the same day which stretches everyone thin from the tour operators to the shops. I don't think any of our ports had more than 3 ships and none were much bigger than the Wonder. I was looking at the Allure for the Mediterranean next summer but decided to stick with the Magic. I know I won't be disappointed.

Entered the cruise terminal in Seattle and boarded the ship in what seemed like a hallway. No crew to welcome us aboard😞. There was a person that squirted us with hand sanitizer and yelled, “washy, washy!” We found our way to our rooms. Had lunch at the buffet and it was okay. Walked around the ship to get a lay of the land and went to room. They could not find our luggage and it was after 7. After many phone calls they finally located it and told my husband “you put the wrong tags on it.” We actually put the tags we were sent on our luggage. Our room steward delivered the luggage to our door and told my husband we had the wrong tags on it also. (I promise we did not print our own luggage tags at home and place them on our bags to confuse the cruise staff!). All restaurant staff had limited English language- nightly errors, no coffee refills, missing items, orders wrong or mixed up. No seafood on the Alaskan Cruise except shrimp and previously frozen salmon☹️. No lobster, no crab legs or anything else crab either. No fresh Alaskan salmon☹️☹️. We could never see a comedy show as we were told there were no more openings but we could wait in a stand by line. We saw Jersey Boys which was very good but only other show in theater was Havana ( Latin music and dance). Theatre was ugly inside for being a new ship. The Walt Disney theatre is beautiful in comparison. Didn’t like all the cigarette cartons they had lined in the hallway as you entered the gift shops. Port times were too short in British Columbia and Ketchikan. (But we did know that before we booked.). Area where most activity took place was too small and they to put out folding chairs most days. Most of all is was truly the disinterest of the staff. Officers ignored us, no one spoke to us, no relationships built. On the last day of the cruise the breakfast server
Said, “we hope your cruise was fine”. And yes, it was, fine 😐

The washy washy thing is definitely an NCL oddity. I last sailed NCL in 2011 and they did it then too.

Some interesting comments above. I'll just throw another line into the mix - Royal Caribbean. We've done their Alaska cruise (out of Seattle) twice now and would book them again. Very happy with the ship and crew.

I'll add also: I just can't justify paying double just to cruise Disney in Alaska. In other regions, the cost difference is more reasonable; but not so with Alaska. We'll be on the Norwegian Encore to Alaska in 2021. My only concern is the size of the ship (Breakaway Plus class). But, we get Glacier Bay, which is a must-see for an Alaska cruise.

We recently completed an Alaskan cruise on the Viking Orion. New ship; small ship (950 passengers); wonderful crew; crab legs every night (if you wanted it); a wonderful variety of food in the buffet and formal dining rooms. Entertainment was first class (ship even has a planetarium). This ship has a wonderful spa and a covered swimming pool (a must for an Alaska cruise if you're going to use the pool). Crew and staff were courteous and attentive. We've cruised on DCL previously and the service and amenities on Viking were as good as, if not better than DCL.

The only negative, if you're a young family, is that this cruise was targeted for an adult audience. No amenities for youngsters, but this was fine with us because we're retired.

Viking no longer allows passengers under 18, so it's not something that families with kids (DCL's target demographic) can even consider.

I'm so glad we cruised DCL to Alaska. It was wonderful.

We went on the Bliss in August with extended family who are frequent cruisers on NCL - so wasn't my choice. We loved certain things (i.e. dinner buffet) but really disliked that there were no family friendly shows nor were there many family activities during the day (daughter doesn't go in any kids' clubs - not even Disney). Not being able to swim just made it all worse. We didn't have issues with service or food but overall, we were disappointed and that was no doubt, our last cruise on NCL. (We've also done Celebrity and Royal to Alaska and loved them both. Personally I'd never do Disney to Alaska.)

I agree about the price. We are going in 2021 also, but on the Jewel. I really wanted a one-way cruise that went to Glacier Bay. We are staying in a Haven Deluxe Owner's Suite. It has two full bathrooms, a wall of windows, and a hot tub on the deck. It is still less expensive than a non-concierge family verandah room with Disney.
