ALASKA - August 30th, 2011 - Mickeys Mooseketeers & the last Alaskan Cruisade! New Th

Been busy getting ready for our Family Reunion. We leave this Saturday. A little worried about it. 1. It in Florida on Marco Island. Doesn't look like that fun of a place. A lot I read gave concern for getting in water. 2. We found out family we were hoping to see may not be coming. 3. Its HOT, HOt, HOT!!

We will be gone for a week July 2 - July 9th. Hope I can check in some.

Good news is almost done with my FE!!!

And SO SO EXCITED FOR ALASKA!!!!!!!!!

Kimberly have fun and enjoy your family reuinion. I looked several times at staying at Marco Island and thought it looked nice:confused3 Yes, it will be hot!!! I'll be right behind you all leaving on the 10th for 5 nights at WDW.

I am really excited that we get to spend that Wednesday at Discovery Cove--never been there and have always wanted to check it out. Best part is we are staying at WDW with some of our cruise peeps that we originally traveled with on the 2008 EBPC cruise. We've made some great friends through the Disboards, it's a shame we are so spread out across the country but we have a grand time when get to travel together:goodvibes

I'll be on the other side of the state July 7-10th hoping to see history in the Space Shuttle's final launch.

Have fun PJ!!!! I had one of our families extend their vacation to see the launch on the 28th but then it got postponed.

I need some help from those of you who may have cruised Alaska before. My mother is cruising with us as she's always wanted to see Alaska but didn't want to go on her own. Well, she says she wants to see Alaska but we can't get her interested in any excursions except whale watching in Juneau. In Skagway and Ketichkan, she thinks she'll just wander around town to shop and have lunch. First, I know these towns are not that big. Second, she doesn't walk well for long periods. I thought the train in Skagway would be a good option to see the scenery without a lot of walking, but she says she grew up in the Rockies so has seen mountains. How do I convince her that Alaska is like nothing she's ever seen before?

Busy weekend for us too. I have my 50th reunion for my sailing group starting today. We are hosting over the next four days day and evening events. Hoping all goes smooth and I can concentrate on ALASKA very soon (plus I would love my life back!!!) Everyone have a wonderful holiday! :goodvibes

I would LOVE to go to WDW, they have a military special on tickets right now too! HAVE FUN!!

PJ, my MIL was the same way when it came to the excursions. She said she wasn't interested in any of them and just wanted to walk around in the towns. I couldn't tell at 1st if she just didn't want to spend the $$ for them or what. But she went to WDW with us all last week and she took off to see the parks a couple of days on her own(well mainly shopping in the parks) and was perfectly content to do this on her own. (Me it kills my soul to use an admission for 2 hours or just a dinner reservation:scared1:) She also doesn't have a computer to actually see everything that is offered either.

I kept expecting her to back out of the Skagway excursion because it is a really long one, but she is looking forward to it and the train ride back. Juneau--going to see the glacier and then the rest of her day free and Ketchikan I bought her a ticket to the Lumberjack show, and she is going to Potlatch Park with us.

She'll be 70 in December, so it's not likes she's ancient. But I think she is more comfortable being in control of her time and not really having to stick to a schedule. But she really is looking forward to the trip and talks about it a whole lot.

One problem about just walking around the town is you miss the history that your tour guide tells you about.

I posted a good walking map for Ketickan. Ketickan is very big for walking around compared to the other two towns. Skagway is the easiest to walk.

I have found a good walking tour map for skagway. A must see there is National Park Service Visitor Center (number one),We were told by Dyea Dave that the parks visitor center gives free walking tours.

hope this help you a bit.

Thanks Paula and Tracy!

I have sat down and shown her the excursions online and we have some books. I do think some of it is the $$$ which is why we have offered to help, but then she doens't want to feel dependent on us. I guess I need to learn that everyone has fun in their own way.

I will mention the National Park Service Visitor Center tours to her. Thanks again for the tip!

Looks like this thread will be very slow this next week. Thats good then I wont miss anything.:thumbsup2

:goodvibesApparently it sure will be, hopefully everyone has wonderful trips

To all you cruisers south of the boarder.

Happy 4th.:cool1:

Thanks

I am sure that she will enjoy however she choses to spend her time in the ports:goodvibes

you wont need transportation for the lumberjack show. It is only a half or a block away from the docks. It is right behind a store that is right at the docks. You should be able to see their climbing poles from the ship the day we pull in to dock.

found a great site for a walking map so you can see how close the show is to the docks. It took a while for it to come up for me.

print both out and tape together.

Actually, when I was there on the Maiden Voyage in May, we are assigned the dock just a little farther away. From the ship, it is a 5 minute walk to the Lumberjack show. Right next door to the Lumberjack Show is a great place that serves fish and chips. It was a great lunch.

My mother is exactly the same. She is 75 and I am bringing my father and her and my brother and SIL on this cruise. My mom and dad don't want to do the excursions either because of the cost. They live in Idaho and spend plenty of time in the mountains so they feel like they don't need to do the excursions either.

What I have suggested is that we take the on/off in Ketchikan and take the tramway up to the top on our own. I think they are willing to do that. Then in Juneau we are going to take the shuttle bus to Mendenhall Glacier. My brother will hike but my mom will probably spend most of her time sitting in the visitors center.

For Skagway, I took the train in May and loved it, but my parents have ridden trains before up in mountains and they don't think they want to spend the money. I agree with them because I did the train and although the scenery was beautiful I live right in the mountains in Salt Lake and have explored mountains alot, so not a big deal. The ship pulls up right into town, so main street is less than a 2-3 minute walk. Not a big deal.

They will enjoy the Tracy Arm day tremendously. When I took my parents on the Panama Canal Cruise in 2005, they enjoyed the day transitting the canal more than anything.

I figure once they get on the ship if they change their minds, we will sign up for something, but I really think they will be happy not doing much of anything, just cruising the inside passage is what they really want to do.

What I did do though is scheduled our Palo's dinner the first night of the cruise so as we cruise up the inside passage we will have the most beautiful view from the ship while we are eating. Your mother might really enjoy that.

Hope that helps!

Linda, hope you all enjoy your views at Palo--that sounds like a great idea:goodvibes

Thankfully my Mom is up for anything, her DH has some mobility issues and can be cantankarious(?) at times though. She was sweet and sat with me quite a bit on Deck 9 while I smoked and she can't stand the things on the PC cruise. My mom is really looking forward to the Art of Entertaining Cooking shows on the cruise. She really enjoyed them on the last cruise.

Have a nice evening, I am going to work on my FE gifts a bit before I turn in for the night.:goodvibes

Lots of paperwork to do today to get my end of the month finished up. It will be a busy weekend at both stores--YEAH!!!! Taylor Swift concert is tomorrow night so Alan will be parking cars for that at Shell----Love my vacation spending $$$:cool1:

Mom asked me yesterday if i was going to have people over for the 4th, so I guess I will call around today and see if anyone else wants to come over. I have some porkloin Alan can throw on the grill.

I really should have had someone stay at our house while we were gone to WDW, Maya (my cat) has been acting so strange since we have been home. When she comes back in (I leave the window open for her during the day) and she doesn't see me or Alan she starts bellowing in the kitchen. She'll stop if she hears one of us say something to her. I guess Adam wasn't here as much as I thought he would have been.:sad2:

Have a great day!!

Thanks, pixiedust:

Our friends at Manitoba tourism are loving us here in Minnesota this weekend, we closed last night at midnight. :happytv:
