Alaska 06/11/12 Anyone Sailing ?

I have been shut out on Palo's from an early reservation standpoint a couple of times, but I have always been able to get in at least once per cruise using the waiting list once the ship sails...Palo's dinner is great, but I think the brunch is even better...I will be making my reservation as soon as I am able

Hello everyone - just joining in!
My name is Kim, my husband is Luke, and I've got two kids, Faith (11) and Caleb (7). I don't know if we've ever been this excited!! Forgive a newbie question, but I just read about the "fish extenders" and was wondering if anyone is doing that on this cruise?

Welcome Kim!!

I totally understand the excitement. :thumbsup2

We have done the "Fish Extenders" on our other cruises (was even 'in charge' of one for our cruise thread) but haven't heard anyone mention them for this cruise. What does everyone else think? I'm not against it, I would just have to re-think our gift options as this time we have to fly.

Welcome!

I think the fe's could be more challenging just because of all of the heavy we need to pack like fleece, boots rain gear, hats etc. we don't usually have to pack that stuff. I am sure people could get creative though.

They are basically mailboxes that you hang outside your cabin door and you can have little gift exchanges (candy, keychains, etc.) with the people you meet on this board. You can get your fish extender (FE) on ebay, etsy, or make your own - they don't have to be fancy.

If you look under Search for "FE Photos" here on disboards or go on google and look up "fish extender" under images you will see a ton.

My kids are SO excited...I guess I'm going to start a list by saying we want to do it, and if nobody else joins, then I'll just buy my kids little gifts myself!

Welcome, Kim!!

I'm a newbie, too, and so excited about crusing to Alaska. I agree that fish extender gifts would have to be very creative for this cruise due to packing restraints, but if the majority want to do it, I'll join in.

Would it help if we put a limit on the Fish Extender list - say maybe 20-25 cabins at the most? That way we wouldn't have to bring enough gifts for the whole ship, and it wouldn't take up all our suitcase room?

If anyone is interested in doing the Fish Extender exchange, please PM me, and if we have anyone who wants to do it, we'll start a list.

Thanks for all the good tips on this thread...I'm embarrased, but being from Arizona, a rain jacket NEVER entered my mind!!

Lukikam... Yes you need some rain gear. Alaska is very wet!

I bought a pair of goretex sneakers as well. Plan to pack gloves and hat too!

I was wondering the same thing. We have done it on each of our cruises and had a blast. Usually need another suitcase for it :scared1: but this time will definitely have to be more creative given all we have to pack. Thank goodness for my AmEx and free bags! :thumbsup2 I will PM you lukikam with our info.

Also if anyone is staying in Seattle I am sure there might be places to pick a few things up? pack a light duffle and pick up few things if there is a place nearby the hotel!

On a side note something weird happened today. We were assigned our room! That has never happened before the full payment was due to us anyway, and from what I have heard on these boards. It was stranger- they emailed us. On the med cruise we had to keep checking and then we just found our assignment out ourselves. We weren't crazy about the room, it was ok, not an upgrade just the 9C we paid for which is ok because that is all you can expect. When I went online they had 9B for only $100 more which is mid ship, and you can pick your cabin. So I just upgraded to that. DH thinks since the cruise still seems to be not full they may want to sell upgrades at the port.

It is so strange that they did the room assignment so early. Also on a good note, we got or request to switch to main dining!

I scored a North face Denali Fleece (normally $175) on 6pm.com for $85 tonight! woohooo that's a deal. It was brown and I would prefer black but for that price i don't mind, I like brown too. I am a huge North face fan and Denali's a super warm. It might get cold out there especially at Tracy Arm, so I am prepared to layer!

Now we just have to wait until the 13th to book excursions and such, and we are ready to go! I am getting super excited but antsy too!

Congrats on upgrading your room! :cheer2:
We picked our cabins so no need to wait for it to be assigned. I keep checking to see how much it would cost us to upgrade but so far it's still over $1500 and I'd rather have that to spend on the trip. I was happy with our cabins when I booked them I think I'm just over thinking it now.
There do seem to be a lot of cabins still available so maybe upgrades at the port will happen. :wizard:

If there did happen to be upgrades at the port are they at a good discount usually? I am not familiar with cruising that much and am just curious about it. I might consider saving the extra for an upgrade if they are reasonably priced. We were also considering getting a quote to go on another cruise after this one. I have heard that lots of people do rebookings on their voyage. Has anyone else done that before? I would love to go on the Fantasy or even the Dream! DH and I are gearing up for our One More Disney Day trip since we are leaving Monday, we got to add an extra day on that one, so we are very happy about that and with us going to V&A this is shaping up to be a very fun trip next week! Anyone else put anymore thought into excursions?? There are so many things to choose from it is really hard to decide! :dance3:

OH! And count me in on the FE Fun! I can't wait to see what I can come up with! ;)

Yeah that's how we feel now thatvwe picked our room. We are happy with the oceanview. If a deal comes up at port for a balcony I might do it, but I don't mind being on deck and saving the $ to spend on other things.

Ashley I think the discount is pretty good when you book on board. You get the early booking price, plus at least 10% off. Have fun at V&A's we love it there.....You will be so stuffed but it is aaamazing and so romantic!

Still deciding on excursions but I need to do it soon my booking window opens on March 13th lol.

If you are looking for ideas for shore excursions, there are pictures for some of them contained in this thread:

...and for VnA, more pictures!!

Victoria and Alberts

We always book future cruises while on board - combination of 10% discount and stateroom credit (which improves as you move up in the Castaway Cay Club), with virtually no risk may it very easy and not-intimidating.

I have never upgraded at port - I usually ask, but just never had the right combination of opportunity and price. Have some sense of what you think is reasonable so you know how to react without having to fret.

Is there anyone who has upgraded at port before? I like the idea of having a "reasonable" price in your head of what you'd pay, but I'm not sure what that would even be. We are in a catagory 9A, but would obviously love a category 4, with a little bigger room and the pull-down bed. Thanks to anyone who can help!

We've got 3 families so far for the Fish Extender...please pm me if interested. Finding all kinds of great ideas for presents online, and want to make this happen! :goodvibes

For those for whom this might apply.....

I could not locate a Catholic Mass near the pier in the time frame that we will be in port that Sunday. I was able to communicate with the diocese and a parish priest will be saying Mass at 7 pm, about .25 miles from the ship for DCL cruise passengers.

I will be asking DCL to put this in the navigator as well, but just in case......

We have never had the opportunity. We always try, but everytime the ship is full! I know it is first come first serve, and you have to do it through the manager not at check in. I also know it is cheaper then doing it online, but not sure how much.

ehagerty...that is so nice of you to set that up! I am sure there will be people on the ship who may want to attend!
I admired your photos from your trip last year and poured over them. Are you going for round 2? I may need some picture advice, I am going to rent a lens but still deciding between zoom and wide angle (maybe both?):worship:

I will be on this cruise - along with 11 other family members ranging in age from 6 to 85. We are taking AMTRAK - getting of at Glacier Natl Park - quite the 2 week planning expedition! Happy to help with photo advice, but I mostly shoot with a 2006 Canon EOS Rebel with the Image Stabilizer 35-105 lens. I am also happy with Canon D10 - a simple, underwater point and shoot. I also understand that most any Nikon will deliver similar results. The ultimate quality comes from framing the shot, then cropping out the distractions!!
