Alaska 06/11/12 Anyone Sailing ?

Going shopping tomorrow for my Formal dress. Wish me LOTS of luck.

Good luck! You should find lots of deals, it being Memorial Weekend and all.

So I've starting putting all of my weird stuff into a pile on the desk so I won't forget it. I looked at the pile and it looks very strange and random!

-I have those OFF belt clips and bug spray because I heard those Alaskan mosquitos are HUGE :scared1:. My husband says they work like a charm!

-A sleep mask because of the limited numbers of night

-Binoculars

-Winter wear (gloves, ear warmers, hand warmers, 3-1 jacket). I'm from Texas and never buy this stuff. Darn, I guess I'll have to go to Alaska again to use it again.

What weird stuff are ya'll packing?

Well, this weekend I got a crash course in cold-weather packing!! My daughter was playing in a soccer tourney in Flagstaff, AZ, and the temp was 41 degrees, with 29 mph wind. I think I finally understand the allure of layering!! My son was cocooned in a comforter the whole time, and we were miserable...hence the 15 layers of clothing that I am now packing!!

Less than two weeks...eeek!

Got a dress. Happy about that, but every time I think I"m done with shopping I think of something else someone needs. :sad2:

Glad you found a dress!! I have been done shopping for a while, but instead of thinking of something me or DH needs, I keep finding stuff that I want!:lmao:

I am so happy that I am actually leaving next week, it is getting so close now, 10 days for us! I am still watching the weather every day. We have a tropical Depression heading our way today so am also keeping an eye on that. I decided that I am just going to plan on it raining every day while we are in Seattle and Alaska, and then if it is sunny it will be a nice pleasant surprise :) :goodvibes

Countdown: 13 Days

We're almost to the point where we are excited about the cruise - FINALLY got our cabin assignment this morning (it wasn't there at 4:00AM PDT, but showed up around 7). Geez, I must have logged in several dozen times in the past couple of weeks! :rotfl: I'm usually super organized about packing, but with two more weeks of school and enrolling the kiddo in classes this summer (summer school starts the day we arrive home), I left the last 10% of packing in the hands of my 16 year old! :worried:

Unfortunately, there is very little (read no) chance that Brave will PremEAR on our sailing. Films are released on the ship the same day they are released on land (we've seen a couple of 12:01A PremEARs on the ship) and fell asleep! :) It will give us something to look forward to when we get home (that's when we're usually in the post-cruise withdrawal period).

It looks like we'll be close to some of you on the ship -look forward to meeting you all!

Ummm...gulp...do we only get to bring 2 bags each?!?! Please tell me no!!! If so I have to repack everything!!! And I've been so organized and on point up to now! I think I'm gonna have a panic attack! LOL

BTW - before things get real crazy and I forget, I want to say thank you to everyone for being a part of our memorable vacation! I look forward to meeting each one of you!

I felt very prepared to pack - nothing in bags yet, but decisions already made. Then I got an email from Disney that says long-sleeve shirts. Really? We really figured short-sleeves along with the layers of fleece, outer jacket, etc. And, I read on a different forum that last year the areas inside the boat were actually warm - but now I'm wondering if I need to include a couple of long-sleeve shirts too?

What do you guys think?

I suppose on some level it comes down to your tolerance level, and since we're used to midwestern winters, I think we can handle it better than people from warm weather states.

I'm sorry, but I think 2 each is correct. You can also have a carry-on if that helps.

We are bringing 2 long-sleeve shirts each. I figure we can layer them under our T-shirts. I'm trying hard not to over pack but :confused3
I've been checking the weather at our ports and it seems to be low 50s during the day if that helps you decide. We are from Florida so it seems cold to us.

I've been watching the weather in our port cities and it's been in the 50's and raining. Its only about 10 degrees or so cooler than what we have here at home now.

I would say everyone should plan on dressing in layers. That way you can add or take away as needed to be comfortable.

I just spoke to DCL and they said you can have more than 2 bags each. If you have more than 2, then when you check in they will have extra luggage tags there. Just remember that you have to store the luggage in your room during the trip.

Called DCL today to ask what movies will be playing on the Wonder, June 11-18th. Their response was:
War Horse
John Carter
Pirates of the Caribbean-On Stranger Tides
Cars 2
Winnie the Pooh
The Help
Real Steel
The Muppets
Chimpanzee
The Avengers

She also said that Brave will be debuting on the Wonder on June 22.

I'm taking 2 suitcases as I need one for FE gifts. The large one is packed and weighs 47 lbs. Still a bit of room in the smaller one so all the last minute things will go in there with the FE gifts and my shoes. I'm trying to get everything done for myself as my grandson gets here two days before we sail and we still have to shop for some things for him. It's getting so close and I'm as excited as I was when I booked this trip way back in July!! Can't wait to meet you all!!

I'm excited to have movies on our ship! We've never been on a cruise that had family-friendly entertainment, aside from one or two stage shows. <tee hee> No matter the movie title, we'll love it!!

Pat - like us, you're also from Indiana. Are you packing long sleeve shirts? I'm still on the fence about this. All reports are highs in the 50s right now, which seems like spring to us.
(Layers are a given, it's a question of long sleeves w/layers over it, or short-sleeve and layer over it.)

For anyone who hasn't seen it...see Chimpanzee! I was soo good:thumbsup2

I know I will get in Avengers because we were saving it for the ship, and maybe John Carter. We have seen everything else, but that's what I love about DCl. Amazing entertainment...well imo anyway!

I had everything laid out to wear - long sleeves and then I read the above posts about the boat being warm inside. Now what? Maybe I will bring half and half? Anyone been inside a ship to Alaska before - they have to keep it comfortable I would assume?

Anyone have an idea when formal night will be? We won't be on the boat for dinner when we are in Victoria because of our excursion. I don't want to bring our formal clothes, and then we aren't there for it.

Thanks!

Formal night is usually the first At Sea day. So traditionally ours should be Tues night.

Yes, character breakfasts are on sea days; check the dining tickets in your cabin for the date (it depends on your dining rotation). It looks like our at sea days are Tues, Wed and maybe Sunday - since we don't get to Victoria until evening. Did they have Palo brunch available (if so, Sunday is considered a day at sea)? We were too late to book brunch.

The ship is very comfortable temperature-wise. We generally wear short sleeves with lightweight sweaters on-board in the winter. However, you will want something warmer for going up on deck or out on the verandah.

There is no luggage limit for the cruise (you can store your luggage under the bed). My daughter loves sailing from California because she can bring as much as she wants (it just has to fit into the car)!
